kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

khittena kusalÄkusalaį¹ desetÅ«āti. Please teach me in brief what is skillful and what is unskillful.ā

BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āLobho kho, vaccha, akusalaį¹, alobho kusalaį¹; āGreed is unskillful, contentment is skillful.
doso kho, vaccha, akusalaį¹, adoso kusalaį¹; Hate is unskillful, love is skillful.
moho kho, vaccha, akusalaį¹, amoho kusalaį¹. Delusion is unskillful, understanding is skillful.
Iti kho, vaccha, ime tayo dhammÄ akusalÄ, tayo dhammÄ kusalÄ. So there are these three unskillful things and three that are skillful.
PÄį¹ÄtipÄto kho, vaccha, akusalaį¹, pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ veramaį¹Ä« kusalaį¹; Killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual misconduct; speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical; covetousness, ill will, and wrong view: these things are unskillful.

Yato kho, vaccha, bhikkhuno taį¹hÄ pahÄ«nÄ hoti ucchinnamÅ«lÄ tÄlÄvatthukatÄ anabhÄvaį¹
katÄ Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammÄ, so hoti bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimuttoāti. When a mendicant has given up craving so it is cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future, that mendicant is perfected. Theyāve ended the defilements, completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and are rightly freed through enlightenment.ā

Atthi pana te bhoto gotamassa ekabhikkhupi sÄvako yo ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharatÄ«āti? is there even a single monk disciple of the worthy Gotama who has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and lives having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements?ā

gena. this spiritual path is complete in that respect.

gÄ nadÄ« samuddaninnÄ samuddapoį¹Ä samuddapabbhÄrÄ samuddaį¹ Ähacca tiį¹į¹hati, evamevÄyaį¹ bhoto gotamassa parisÄ sagahaį¹į¹hapabbajitÄ nibbÄnaninnÄ nibbÄnapoį¹Ä nibbÄnapabbhÄrÄ nibbÄnaį¹ Ähacca tiį¹į¹hati. Just as the Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines towards the ocean, and keeps pushing into the ocean, in the same way the worthy Gotamaās assemblyāwith both laypeople and renunciatesāslants, slopes, and inclines towards extinguishment, and keeps pushing into extinguishment.

LabheyyÄhaį¹ bhoto gotamassa santike pabbajjaį¹, labheyyaį¹ upasampadanāti. May I receive the going forth, the ordination in the worthy Gotamaās presence?ā
āYo kho, vaccha, aƱƱatitthiyapubbo imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye Äkaį¹
khati pabbajjaį¹, Äkaį¹
khati upasampadaį¹, so cattÄro mÄse parivasati. Catunnaį¹ mÄsÄnaį¹ accayena ÄraddhacittÄ bhikkhÅ« pabbÄjenti upasampÄdenti bhikkhubhÄvÄya; āVaccha, if someone formerly ordained in another sect wishes to take the going forth, the ordination in this teaching and training, they must spend four months on probation. When four months have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, theyāll give the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.
api ca mettha puggalavemattatÄ viditÄāti. However, I have recognized individual differences in this matter.ā

When four years have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, let them give me the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.ā

āyÄvatakaį¹, bhante, sekhena ƱÄį¹ena sekhÄya vijjÄya pattabbaį¹, anuppattaį¹ taį¹ mayÄ; āSir, Iāve reached as far as possible with the knowledge and understanding of a trainee.
uttari ca me bhagavÄ dhammaį¹ desetÅ«āti. Please teach me further.ā
āTena hi tvaį¹, vaccha, dve dhamme uttari bhÄvehiāsamathaƱca vipassanaƱca. āWell then, Vaccha, further develop two things: serenity and discernment.
Ime kho te, vaccha, dve dhammÄ uttari bhÄvitÄāsamatho ca vipassanÄ caāanekadhÄtupaį¹ivedhÄya saį¹vattissanti. When you have further developed these two things, theyāll lead to the penetration of many elements.

ādibbÄya sotadhÄtuyÄ visuddhÄya atikkantamÄnusikÄya ubho sadde suį¹eyyaį¹ādibbe ca mÄnuse ca, ye dÅ«re santike cÄāti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataį¹ pÄpuį¹issasi, sati satiÄyatane. āWith clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, may I hear both kinds of sounds, human and heavenly, whether near or far.ā

anuttaraį¹ vÄ cittaį¹ anuttaraį¹ cittanti pajÄneyyaį¹; and mind that is supreme as āmind that is supremeā;
samÄhitaį¹ vÄ cittaį¹ samÄhitaį¹ cittanti pajÄneyyaį¹, mind immersed in samÄdhi as āmind immersed in samÄdhiā,
asamÄhitaį¹ vÄ cittaį¹ asamÄhitaį¹ cittanti pajÄneyyaį¹; and mind not immersed in samÄdhi as āmind not immersed in samÄdhiā;

That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. May I remember: āThere, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.ā May I recollect my many past lives, with features and details.ā

They denounced the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they chose to act out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never denounced the noble ones; they had right view; and they chose to act out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, may I see sentient beings passing away and being rebornāinferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. And may I understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.ā

āÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihareyyanāti, āMay I realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.āā
tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataį¹ pÄpuį¹issasi, sati satiÄyataneāti.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ vacchagotto bhagavato bhÄsitaį¹ abhinanditvÄ anumoditvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ pakkÄmi. And then Venerable Vacchagotta approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ vacchagotto eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaāyassatthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ābrahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihÄsi. Then Vacchagotta, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
āKhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti abbhaƱƱÄsi. He understood: āRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā
AƱƱataro kho panÄyasmÄ vacchagotto arahataį¹ ahosi. And Venerable Vacchagotta became one of the perfected.
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ dassanÄya gacchanti. Now at that time several mendicants were going to see the Buddha.
AddasÄ kho ÄyasmÄ vacchagotto te bhikkhÅ« dÅ«ratova Ägacchante. Vacchagotta saw them coming off in the distance,
DisvÄna yena te bhikkhÅ« tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ te bhikkhÅ« etadavoca: went up to them, and said,
āhanda kahaį¹ pana tumhe Äyasmanto gacchathÄāti? āHello venerables, where are you going?ā
āBhagavantaį¹ kho mayaį¹, Ävuso, dassanÄya gacchÄmÄāti. āReverend, we are going to see the Buddha.ā
āTenahÄyasmanto mama vacanena bhagavato pÄde sirasÄ vandatha, evaƱca vadetha: āWell then, reverends, in my name please bow with your head at the Buddhaās feet and say:
āvacchagotto, bhante, bhikkhu bhagavato pÄde sirasÄ vandati, evaƱca vadetiāāSir, the mendicant Vacchagotta bows with his head to your feet and says,
pariciį¹į¹o me bhagavÄ, pariciį¹į¹o me sugatoāāti. āI have served the Blessed One! I have served the Holy One!āāā
āEvamÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato vacchagottassa paccassosuį¹. āYes, reverend,ā they replied.
Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then those mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
āÄyasmÄ, bhante, vacchagotto bhagavato pÄde sirasÄ vandati, evaƱca vadeti: āSir, the mendicant Vacchagotta bows with his head to your feet and says:
āpariciį¹į¹o me bhagavÄ, pariciį¹į¹o me sugatoāāti. āI have served the Blessed One! I have served the Holy One!āā
āPubbeva me, bhikkhave, vacchagotto bhikkhu cetasÄ ceto paricca vidito: āIāve already comprehended Vacchagottaās mind and understood that
ātevijjo vacchagotto bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahÄnubhÄvoāti. he has the three knowledges, and is very mighty and powerful.
DevatÄpi me etamatthaį¹ Ärocesuį¹: And deities also told me about this.ā
ātevijjo, bhante, vacchagotto bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahÄnubhÄvoāāti.
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
AttamanÄ te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato bhÄsitaį¹ abhinandunti. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.
