Mahākaccānabhaddekarattasutta Mahākaccāna and One Fine Night

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati tapodārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Hot Springs Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi rattiyā paccÅ«sasamayaį¹ paccuį¹­į¹­hāya yena tapodo tenupasaį¹…kami gattāni parisiƱcituį¹. Then Venerable Samiddhi rose at the crack of dawn and went to the hot springs to bathe.

Tapode gattāni parisiƱcitvā paccuttaritvā ekacÄ«varo aį¹­į¹­hāsi gattāni pubbāpayamāno. When he had bathed and emerged from the water he stood in one robe drying his limbs.

Atha kho aƱƱatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ tapodaį¹ obhāsetvā yenāyasmā samiddhi tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā āyasmantaį¹ samiddhiį¹ etadavoca: Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire hot springs, went up to Samiddhi, stood to one side, and said to Samiddhi:

ā€œdhāresi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱcāā€ti? ā€œMendicant, do you remember the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night?ā€

ā€œNa kho ahaį¹, āvuso, dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱca. ā€œNo, reverend, I do not.

Tvaį¹ panāvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱcāā€ti? Do you?ā€

ā€œAhampi kho, bhikkhu, na dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱca. ā€œI also do not.

Dhāresi pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattiyo gāthāā€ti? But do you remember just the verses on the one who has one fine night?ā€

ā€œNa kho ahaį¹, āvuso, dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti. ā€œI do not.

Tvaį¹ panāvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāā€ti? Do you?ā€

ā€œAhampi kho, bhikkhu na dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthāti. ā€œI also do not.

Uggaį¹‡hāhi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱca; Learn the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night, mendicant,

pariyāpuį¹‡Ähi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱca; memorize it,

dhārehi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱca. and remember it.

Atthasaį¹hito, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddeso ca vibhaį¹…go ca ādibrahmacariyakoā€ti. It is beneficial and relates to the fundamentals of the spiritual life.ā€

Idamavoca sā devatā. Thatā€™s what that deity said,

Idaį¹ vatvā tatthevantaradhāyi. before vanishing right there.

Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi tassā rattiyā accayena yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā samiddhi bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then, when the night had passed, Samiddhi went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then he added:

ā€œIdhāhaį¹, bhante, rattiyā paccÅ«sasamayaį¹ paccuį¹­į¹­hāya yena tapodo tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹ gattāni parisiƱcituį¹.

Tapode gattāni parisiƱcitvā paccuttaritvā ekacÄ«varo aį¹­į¹­hāsiį¹ gattāni pubbāpayamāno.

Idamavoca, bhante, sā devatā.

Idaį¹ vatvā tatthevantaradhāyi.

Sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā bhaddekarattassa uddesaƱca vibhaį¹…gaƱca desetÅ«ā€ti. ā€œSir, please teach me the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night.ā€

ā€œTena hi, bhikkhu, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, mendicant, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho āyasmā samiddhi bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ Samiddhi replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œAtÄ«taį¹ nānvāgameyya, ā€œDonā€™t run back to the past,

nappaį¹­ikaį¹…khe anāgataį¹; donā€™t anticipate the future.

YadatÄ«taį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ taį¹, Whatā€™s past is left behind,

appattaƱca anāgataį¹. the future has not arrived;

PaccuppannaƱca yo dhammaį¹, and any present phenomenon

tattha tattha vipassati; you clearly discern in every case.

Asaį¹hÄ«raį¹ asaį¹…kuppaį¹, The unfaltering, the unshakable:

taį¹ vidvā manubrÅ«haye. having known that, foster it.

Ajjeva kiccamātappaį¹, Todayā€™s the day to keenly workā€”

ko jaƱƱā maraį¹‡aį¹ suve; who knows, tomorrow may bring death!

Na hi no saį¹…garaį¹ tena, For there is no bargain to be struck

mahāsenena maccunā. with Death and his mighty horde.

Evaį¹vihāriį¹ ātāpiį¹, One who keenly meditates like this,

ahorattamatanditaį¹; tireless all night and day:

Taį¹ ve bhaddekarattoti, thatā€™s who has one fine nightā€”

santo ācikkhate munÄ«ā€ti. so declares the peaceful sage.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā; That is what the Buddha said.

idaį¹ vatvāna sugato uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ pāvisi. When he had spoken, the Holy One got up from his seat and entered his dwelling.

Atha kho tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹, acirapakkantassa bhagavato, etadahosi: Soon after the Buddha left, those mendicants considered,

ā€œidaį¹ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho: ā€œThe Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail. ā€¦

ā€˜AtÄ«taį¹ nānvāgameyya,

nappaį¹­ikaį¹…khe anāgataį¹;

YadatÄ«taį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ taį¹,

appattaƱca anāgataį¹.

PaccuppannaƱca yo dhammaį¹,

tattha tattha vipassati;

Asaį¹hÄ«raį¹ asaį¹…kuppaį¹,

taį¹ vidvā manubrÅ«haye.

Ajjeva kiccamātappaį¹,

ko jaƱƱā maraį¹‡aį¹ suve;

Na hi no saį¹…garaį¹ tena,

mahāsenena maccunā.

Evaį¹vihāriį¹ ātāpiį¹,

Atha kho tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ etadahosi: Then those mendicants thought:

ā€œayaį¹ kho āyasmā mahākaccāno satthu ceva saį¹vaį¹‡į¹‡ito sambhāvito ca viĆ±Ć±Å«naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹; ā€œThis Venerable Mahākaccāna is praised by the Buddha and esteemed by his sensible spiritual companions.

pahoti cāyasmā mahākaccāno imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajituį¹. He is capable of explaining in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha.

YannÅ«na mayaį¹ yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kameyyāma; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyāmāā€ti. Letā€™s go to him, and ask him about this matter.ā€

Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahākaccānena saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. Then those mendicants went to Mahākaccāna, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etadavocuį¹: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side. They told him what had happened, and said:

ā€œidaį¹ kho no, āvuso kaccāna, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho:

Tesaį¹ no, āvuso kaccāna, amhākaį¹ etadahosi:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho āyasmā mahākaccāno satthu ceva saį¹vaį¹‡į¹‡ito sambhāvito ca viĆ±Ć±Å«naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹.

Pahoti cāyasmā mahākaccāno imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajituį¹.

YannÅ«na mayaį¹ yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kameyyāma; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyāmāā€™ti.

Vibhajatāyasmā mahākaccānoā€ti. ā€œMay Venerable Mahākaccāna please explain this.ā€

ā€œSeyyathāpi, āvuso, puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato atikkammeva mÅ«laį¹ atikkamma khandhaį¹ sākhāpalāse sāraį¹ pariyesitabbaį¹ maƱƱeyya; ā€œReverends, suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heā€™d come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But heā€™d pass over the roots and trunk, imagining that the heartwood should be sought in the branches and leaves.

evaį¹sampadamidaį¹ āyasmantānaį¹ satthari sammukhÄ«bhÅ«te taį¹ bhagavantaį¹ atisitvā amhe etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipucchitabbaį¹ maƱƱatha. Such is the consequence for the venerables. Though you were face to face with the Buddha, you overlooked him, imagining that you should ask me about this matter.

So hāvuso, bhagavā jānaį¹ jānāti, passaį¹ passati, cakkhubhÅ«to Ʊāį¹‡abhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmÄ« tathāgato. For he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One.

So ceva panetassa kālo ahosi yaį¹ bhagavantaį¹yeva etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha, yathā vo bhagavā byākareyya tathā naį¹ dhāreyyāthāā€ti. That was the time to approach the Buddha and ask about this matter. You should have remembered it in line with the Buddhaā€™s answer.ā€

ā€œAddhāvuso kaccāna, bhagavā jānaį¹ jānāti, passaį¹ passati, cakkhubhÅ«to Ʊāį¹‡abhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmÄ« tathāgato. ā€œCertainly he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One.

So ceva panetassa kālo ahosi yaį¹ bhagavantaį¹yeva etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyāma; That was the time to approach the Buddha and ask about this matter.

yathā no bhagavā byākareyya tathā naį¹ dhāreyyāma. We should have remembered it in line with the Buddhaā€™s answer.

Api cāyasmā mahākaccāno satthu ceva saį¹vaį¹‡į¹‡ito sambhāvito ca viĆ±Ć±Å«naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹; Still, Venerable Mahākaccāna is praised by the Buddha and esteemed by his sensible spiritual companions.

pahoti cāyasmā mahākaccāno imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajituį¹. He is capable of explaining in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha.

Vibhajatāyasmā mahākaccāno agaruį¹ karitvāā€ti. Please explain this, if itā€™s no trouble.ā€

ā€œTena hāvuso, suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, reverends, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato mahākaccānassa paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ they replied.

Āyasmā mahākaccāno etadavoca: Venerable Mahākaccāna said this:

ā€œYaį¹ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho: ā€œReverends, the Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail:

KathaƱca, āvuso, atÄ«taį¹ anvāgameti? And how do you run back to the past?

Iti me cakkhu ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti rÅ«pātiā€”Consciousness gets tied up there with desire and lust, thinking: ā€˜In the past I had such eyes and such sights.ā€™

tattha chandarāgappaį¹­ibaddhaį¹ hoti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, chandarāgappaį¹­ibaddhattā viƱƱāį¹‡assa tadabhinandati, tadabhinandanto atÄ«taį¹ anvāgameti. So you take pleasure in that, and thatā€™s when you run back to the past.

Iti me sotaį¹ ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti saddāti ā€¦peā€¦ Consciousness gets tied up there with desire and lust, thinking: ā€˜In the past I had such ears and such sounds ā€¦

iti me ghānaį¹ ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti gandhāti ā€¦ such a nose and such smells ā€¦

iti me jivhā ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti rasāti ā€¦ such a tongue and such tastes ā€¦

iti me kāyo ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti phoį¹­į¹­habbāti ā€¦ such a body and such touches ā€¦

iti me mano ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti dhammātiā€”such a mind and such ideas.ā€™

Iti me cakkhu ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti rÅ«pātiā€”Consciousness doesnā€™t get tied up there with desire and lust, thinking: ā€˜In the past I had such eyes and such sights.ā€™

tattha na chandarāgappaį¹­ibaddhaį¹ hoti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, na chandarāgappaį¹­ibaddhattā viƱƱāį¹‡assa na tadabhinandati, na tadabhinandanto atÄ«taį¹ nānvāgameti. So you donā€™t take pleasure in that, and thatā€™s when you no longer run back to the past.

Iti me sotaį¹ ahosi atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ iti saddāti ā€¦peā€¦ Consciousness doesnā€™t get tied up there with desire and lust, thinking: ā€˜In the past I had such ears and such sounds ā€¦

KathaƱca, āvuso, anāgataį¹ paį¹­ikaį¹…khati? And how do you anticipate the future?

Iti me cakkhu siyā anāgatamaddhānaį¹ iti rÅ«pātiā€”The heart is set on getting what it does not have, thinking: ā€˜May I have such eyes and such sights in the future.ā€™

appaį¹­iladdhassa paį¹­ilābhāya cittaį¹ paį¹‡idahati, cetaso paį¹‡idhānapaccayā tadabhinandati, tadabhinandanto anāgataį¹ paį¹­ikaį¹…khati. So you take pleasure in that, and thatā€™s when you anticipate the future.

Iti me sotaį¹ siyā anāgatamaddhānaį¹ iti saddāti ā€¦peā€¦ The heart is set on getting what it does not have, thinking: ā€˜May I have such ears and such sounds ā€¦

iti me ghānaį¹ siyā anāgatamaddhānaį¹ iti gandhāti ā€¦ such a nose and such smells ā€¦

evaį¹ kho, āvuso, anāgataį¹ paį¹­ikaį¹…khati. Thatā€™s how you anticipate the future.

KathaƱca, āvuso, anāgataį¹ nappaį¹­ikaį¹…khati? And how do you not anticipate the future?

Ākaį¹…khamānā ca pana tumhe āyasmanto bhagavantaį¹yeva upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha, If you wish, you may go to the Buddha and ask him about this.

yathā vo bhagavā byākaroti tathā naį¹ dhāreyyāthāā€ti. You should remember it in line with the Buddhaā€™s answer.ā€

Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato mahākaccānassa bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then those mendicants, approving and agreeing with what Mahākaccāna said, rose from their seats and went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened, adding:

Pahoti cāyasmā mahākaccāno imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajituį¹.

YannÅ«na mayaį¹ yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kameyyāma; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyāmāā€™ti.

Atha kho mayaį¹, bhante, yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kamimha; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipucchimha.

Tesaį¹ no, bhante, āyasmatā mahākaccānena imehi ākārehi imehi padehi imehi byaƱjanehi attho vibhattoā€ti. ā€œMahākaccāna clearly explained the meaning to us in this manner, with these words and phrases.ā€

ā€œPaį¹‡įøito, bhikkhave, mahākaccāno; mahāpaƱƱo, bhikkhave mahākaccāno. ā€œMahākaccāna is astute, mendicants, he has great wisdom.

MaƱcepi tumhe, bhikkhave, etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha, ahampi taį¹ evamevaį¹ byākareyyaį¹ yathā taį¹ mahākaccānena byākataį¹. If you came to me and asked this question, I would answer it in exactly the same way as Mahākaccāna.

Eso cevetassa attho. EvaƱca naį¹ dhārethāā€ti. That is what it means, and thatā€™s how you should remember it.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Attamanā te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato bhāsitaį¹ abhinandunti. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.
