Lomasakaṅgiyabhaddekarattasutta Lomasakaṅgiya and One Fine Night Lomasakangiya and A Single Excellent Night
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard. Thus have I heard.
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. On one occasion the Blessed One was living at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park.
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā lomasakaṅgiyo sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. Now at that time Venerable Lomasakaṅgiya was staying in the Sakyan country at Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Now on that occasion the venerable Lomasakangiya was living in the Sakyan country at Kapilavatthu in Nigrodha’s Park.
Atha kho candano devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ nigrodhārāmaṁ obhāsetvā yenāyasmā lomasakaṅgiyo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho candano devaputto āyasmantaṁ lomasakaṅgiyaṁ etadavoca: Then, late at night, the glorious godling Candana, lighting up the entire Banyan Tree Monastery, went up to the Venerable Lomasakaṅgiya, and stood to one side. Standing to one side, he said to Lomasakaṅgiya: Then, when the night was well advanced, Candana, a young deity of beautiful appearance who illuminated the whole of Nigrodha’s Park, approached the venerable Lomasakangiya. Standing at one side, Candana the young deity said to him:
“dhāresi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcā”ti? “Mendicant, do you remember the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night?” “Bhikkhu, do you remember the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’?”
“Na kho ahaṁ, āvuso, dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca. “No, reverend, I do not. “Friend, I do not remember the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.
Tvaṁ panāvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcā”ti? Do you?” But, friend, do you remember the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’?”
“Ahampi kho, bhikkhu, na dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca. “I also do not. “Bhikkhu, I too do not remember the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.
Dhāresi pana tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattiyo gāthā”ti? But do you remember just the verses on the one who has one fine night?” But, bhikkhu, do you remember the stanza of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’?”
“Na kho ahaṁ, āvuso, dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā. “I do not. “Friend, I do not remember the stanza of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.
Tvaṁ panāvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā”ti? Do you?” But, friend, do you remember the stanza of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’?”
“Dhāremi kho ahaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattiyo gāthā”ti. “I do.” “Bhikkhu, I remember the stanza of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.”
“Yathā kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, āvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā”ti? “How do you remember the verses on the one who has one fine night?” “But, friend, in what way do you remember the stanza of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’?”
“Ekamidaṁ, bhikkhu, samayaṁ bhagavā devesu tāvatiṁsesu viharati pāricchattakamūle paṇḍukambalasilāyaṁ. “This one time, the Buddha was staying among the gods of the thirty-three at the root of the Orchid Tree on the stone spread with a cream rug. “Bhikkhu, once the Blessed One was living among the gods of the heaven of the Thirty-three, on the Red Marble Stone at the root of the Pāricchattaka tree.
Tatra bhagavā devānaṁ tāvatiṁsānaṁ bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca abhāsi: There he taught the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night to the gods of the thirty-three: There the Blessed One recited the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’ to the gods of the heaven of the Thirty-three:
‘Atītaṁ nānvāgameyya, ‘Don’t run back to the past, ‘Let not a person revive the past
nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṁ; don’t anticipate the future. Or on the future build his hopes;
Yadatītaṁ pahīnaṁ taṁ, What’s past is left behind, For the past has been left behind
appattañca anāgataṁ. the future has not arrived; And the future has not been reached.
Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṁ, and any present phenomenon Instead with insight let him see
tattha tattha vipassati; you clearly discern in every case. Each presently arisen state;
Asaṁhīraṁ asaṅkuppaṁ, The unfaltering, the unshakable: Let him know that and be sure of it,
taṁ vidvā manubrūhaye. having known that, foster it. Invincibly, unshakeably.
Ajjeva kiccamātappaṁ, Today’s the day to keenly work—Today the effort must be made;
ko jaññā maraṇaṁ suve; who knows, tomorrow may bring death! Tomorrow Death may come, who knows?
Na hi no saṅgaraṁ tena, For there is no bargain to be struck No bargain with Mortality
mahāsenena maccunā. with Death and his mighty horde. Can keep him and his hordes away.
Evaṁvihāriṁ ātāpiṁ, One who keenly meditates like this, But one who dwells thus ardently,
ahorattamatanditaṁ; tireless all night and day: Relentlessly, by day, by night—
Taṁ ve bhaddekarattoti, that’s who has one fine night—It is he, the Peaceful Sage has said,
santo ācikkhate munī’ti. so declares the peaceful sage.’ Who has had a single excellent night.’
Evaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhikkhu, dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā. That’s how I remember the verses of the one who has one fine night. “Bhikkhu, I remember the stanza of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’ thus.
Uggaṇhāhi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca; Learn the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night, mendicant, Bhikkhu, learn the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.
pariyāpuṇāhi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca; memorize it, Bhikkhu, master the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had A Single Excellent Night.’
dhārehi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca. and remember it. Bhikkhu, remember the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.
Atthasaṁhito, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddeso ca vibhaṅgo ca ādibrahmacariyako”ti. It is beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life.” Bhikkhu, the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’ is beneficial, it belongs to the fundamentals of the holy life.”
Idamavoca candano devaputto. That is what the godling Candana said That is what was said by Candana the young deity,
Idaṁ vatvā tatthevantaradhāyi. before vanishing right there. who thereupon vanished at once.
Atha kho āyasmā lomasakaṅgiyo tassā rattiyā accayena senāsanaṁ saṁsāmetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena sāvatthi tena cārikaṁ pakkāmi. Then Lomasakaṅgiya set his lodgings in order and, taking his bowl and robe, set out for Sāvatthī. Then, when the night was over, the venerable Lomasakangiya set his resting place in order, and taking his bowl and outer robe, set out to wander by stages to Sāvatthī.
Anupubbena cārikaṁ caramāno yena sāvatthi jetavanaṁ anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāmo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā lomasakaṅgiyo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Eventually he came to Sāvatthī and Jeta’s Grove. He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then he added: He at length arrived at Sāvatthī, and went to the Blessed One in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park. After paying homage to him, he sat down at one side and told the Blessed One all that had occurred:
“Ekamidāhaṁ, bhante, samayaṁ sakkesu viharāmi kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. “Venerable sir, on one occasion I was living in the Sakyan country at Kapilavatthu in Nigrodha’s Park.
Atha kho, bhante, aññataro devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ nigrodhārāmaṁ obhāsetvā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho, bhante, so devaputto maṁ etadavoca: Then, venerable sir, when the night was well advanced, a certain young deity of beautiful appearance who illuminated the whole of Nigrodha’s Park, approached me. Standing at one side, that young deity said to me:
‘dhāresi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcā’ti? ‘Bhikkhu, do you remember the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”?’
Evaṁ vutte, ahaṁ, bhante, taṁ devaputtaṁ etadavocaṁ: When this was said, venerable sir, I told that young deity:
‘na kho ahaṁ, āvuso, dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca. ‘Friend, I do not remember the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.
Tvaṁ panāvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañcā’ti? But, friend, do you remember the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”?’
‘Ahampi kho, bhikkhu, na dhāremi bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca. ‘Bhikkhu, I too do not remember the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.
Dhāresi pana tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattiyo gāthā’ti? But, bhikkhu, do you remember the stanza of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”?’
‘Na kho ahaṁ, āvuso, dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā. ‘Friend, I do not remember the stanza of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.
Tvaṁ panāvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā’ti? But, friend, do you remember the stanza of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”?’
‘Dhāremi kho ahaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattiyo gāthā’ti. ‘Bhikkhu, I remember the stanza of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.’
‘Yathā kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, āvuso, dhāresi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā’ti? ‘But, friend, in what way do you remember the stanza of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”?’

“Atītaṁ nānvāgameyya, “Let not a person revive the past…

Taṁ ve bhaddekarattoti, It is he, the Peaceful Sage has said,
santo ācikkhate munī”ti. Who has had a single excellent night.”
Evaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhikkhu, dhāremi bhaddekarattiyo gāthā. Bhikkhu, I remember the stanza of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night” thus.
Uggaṇhāhi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca; Bhikkhu, learn the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.
pariyāpuṇāhi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca; Bhikkhu, master the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.
dhārehi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca. Bhikkhu, remember the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night”.
Atthasaṁhito, bhikkhu, bhaddekarattassa uddeso ca vibhaṅgo ca ādibrahmacariyako’ti. Bhikkhu, the summary and exposition of “One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night” is beneficial, it belongs to the fundamentals of the holy life.’
Idamavoca, bhante, so devaputto. That is what was said by that young deity, venerable sir,
Idaṁ vatvā tatthevantaradhāyi. who thereupon vanished at once.
Sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā bhaddekarattassa uddesañca vibhaṅgañca desetū”ti. “Sir, please teach me the summary recital and the analysis of the one who has one fine night.” It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the summary and exposition of ‘One Who Has Had a Single Excellent Night’.”
“Jānāsi pana tvaṁ, bhikkhu, taṁ devaputtan”ti? “But mendicant, do you know that god?” “Bhikkhu, do you know that young deity?”
“Na kho ahaṁ, bhante, jānāmi taṁ devaputtan”ti. “I do not, sir.” “No, venerable sir.”
“Candano nāma so, bhikkhu, devaputto. “That godling was named Candana. “Bhikkhu, that young deity is named Candana.
Candano, bhikkhu, devaputto aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasikatvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasoto dhammaṁ suṇāti. Candana pays attention, applies the mind, concentrates wholeheartedly, and actively listens to the teaching. He heeds the Dhamma, gives it attention, engages it with all his mind, hears it with eager ears.
Tena hi, bhikkhu, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti. Well then, mendicant, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.” So, bhikkhu, listen and attend closely to what I shall say.”
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā lomasakaṅgiyo bhagavato paccassosi. “Yes, sir,” Lomasakaṅgiya replied. “Yes, venerable sir,” the venerable Lomasakangiya replied to the Blessed One.
Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:
“Atītaṁ nānvāgameyya, “Don’t run back to the past, “Let not a person revive the past
nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṁ; don’t anticipate the future. Or on the future build his hopes;

evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, atītaṁ anvāgameti. That is how, bhikkhu, one revives the past.
Kathañca, bhikkhu, atītaṁ nānvāgameti …pe… And how, bhikkhu, does one not revive the past?…
evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, atītaṁ nānvāgameti. That is how, bhikkhu, one does not revive the past.
Kathañca, bhikkhu, anāgataṁ paṭikaṅkhati …pe… And how, bhikkhu, does one build up hope upon the future?…
evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, anāgataṁ paṭikaṅkhati. That is how, bhikkhu, one builds up hope upon the future.
Kathañca, bhikkhu, anāgataṁ nappaṭikaṅkhati …pe… And how, bhikkhu, does one not build up hope upon the future?…
evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, anāgataṁ nappaṭikaṅkhati. That is how, bhikkhu, one does not build up hope upon the future.
Kathañca, bhikkhu, paccuppannesu dhammesu saṁhīrati …pe… And how, bhikkhu, is one vanquished in regard to presently arisen states?…
evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, paccuppannesu dhammesu saṁhīrati. That is how, bhikkhu, one is vanquished in regard to presently arisen states.
Kathañca, bhikkhu, paccuppannesu dhammesu na saṁhīrati …pe… And how, bhikkhu, is one invincible in regard to presently arisen states?…
evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, paccuppannesu dhammesu na saṁhīrati. That is how, bhikkhu, one is invincible in regard to presently arisen states.
Atītaṁ nānvāgameyya, Let not a person revive the past
nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṁ; Or on the future build his hopes;
Yadatītaṁ pahīnaṁ taṁ, For the past has been left behind
appattañca anāgataṁ. And the future has not been reached.
Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṁ, Instead with insight let him see
tattha tattha vipassati; Each presently arisen state;
Asaṁhīraṁ asaṅkuppaṁ, Let him know that and be sure of it,
taṁ vidvā manubrūhaye. Invincibly, unshakeably.

Attamano āyasmā lomasakaṅgiyo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandīti. Satisfied, Venerable Lomasakaṅgiya approved what the Buddha said. The venerable Lomasakangiya was satisfied and delighted in the Blessed One’s words.
Lomasakaṅgiyabhaddekarattasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ catutthaṁ.
