ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground.
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ samiddhi araƱƱakuį¹ikÄyaį¹ viharati. Now at that time Venerable Samiddhi was staying in a wilderness hut.
Atha kho potaliputto paribbÄjako jaį¹
ghÄvihÄraį¹ anucaį¹
kamamÄno anuvicaramÄno yenÄyasmÄ samiddhi tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ samiddhinÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then as the wanderer Potaliputta was going for a walk he came up to Venerable Samiddhi and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho potaliputto paribbÄjako Äyasmantaį¹ samiddhiį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:
āsammukhÄ metaį¹, Ävuso samiddhi, samaį¹assa gotamassa sutaį¹, sammukhÄ paį¹iggahitaį¹: āReverend Samiddhi, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the ascetic Gotama:
āmoghaį¹ kÄyakammaį¹ moghaį¹ vacÄ«kammaį¹, manokammameva saccanāti. āDeeds by way of body and speech are done in vain. Only mental deeds are real.ā
Atthi ca sÄ samÄpatti yaį¹ samÄpattiį¹ samÄpanno na kiƱci vediyatÄ«āti? And: āThere is such an attainment where the one who enters it does not feel anything at all.āā
āMÄ hevaį¹, Ävuso potaliputta, avaca; mÄ hevaį¹, Ävuso potaliputta, avaca; mÄ bhagavantaį¹ abbhÄcikkhi. Na hi sÄdhu bhagavato abbhakkhÄnaį¹. Na hi bhagavÄ evaį¹ vadeyya: āDonāt say that, Reverend Potaliputta, donāt say that! Donāt misrepresent the Buddha, for misrepresentation of the Buddha is not good. And the Buddha would not say this:
āmoghaį¹ kÄyakammaį¹ moghaį¹ vacÄ«kammaį¹, manokammameva saccanāti. āDeeds by way of body and speech are done in vain. Only mental deeds are real.ā
āAtthi ca kho sÄ, Ävuso, samÄpatti yaį¹ samÄpattiį¹ samÄpanno na kiƱci vediyatÄ«āāti. But, reverend, there is such an attainment where the one who enters it does not feel anything at all.ā
āKÄ«vaciraį¹ pabbajitosi, Ävuso samiddhÄ«āti? āReverend Samiddhi, how long has it been since you went forth?ā
āNa ciraį¹, Ävuso, tÄ«į¹i vassÄnÄ«āti. āNot long, reverend: three years.ā
āEttha dÄni mayaį¹ there bhikkhÅ« kiį¹ vakkhÄma, yatra hi nÄma evaį¹navo bhikkhu satthÄraį¹ parirakkhitabbaį¹ maƱƱissati. āWell now, what are we to say to the senior mendicants, when even such a junior mendicant imagines their Teacher needs defending?
SaƱcetanikaį¹, Ävuso samiddhi, kammaį¹ katvÄ kÄyena vÄcÄya manasÄ kiį¹ so vediyatÄ«āti? After doing an intentional deed by way of body, speech, or mind, reverend, what does one feel?ā
āSaƱcetanikaį¹, Ävuso potaliputta, kammaį¹ katvÄ kÄyena vÄcÄya manasÄ dukkhaį¹ so vediyatÄ«āti. āAfter doing an intentional deed by way of body, speech, or mind, reverend, one feels suffering.ā
Atha kho potaliputto paribbÄjako Äyasmato samiddhissa bhÄsitaį¹ neva abhinandi nappaį¹ikkosi; Then, neither approving nor dismissing Samiddhiās statement, Potaliputta
anabhinanditvÄ appaį¹ikkositvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ pakkÄmi. got up from his seat and left.

kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ Änandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Soon after he had left, Venerable Samiddhi went to Venerable Änanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

Evaį¹ vutte, ÄyasmÄ Änando Äyasmantaį¹ samiddhiį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, Änanda said to him,
āatthi kho idaį¹, Ävuso samiddhi, kathÄpÄbhataį¹ bhagavantaį¹ dassanÄya. āReverend Samiddhi, we should see the Buddha about this matter.
ÄyÄmÄvuso samiddhi, yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamissÄma; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ etamatthaį¹ bhagavato ÄrocessÄma. Come, letās go to the Buddha and inform him about this.
YathÄ no bhagavÄ byÄkarissati tathÄ naį¹ dhÄressÄmÄāti. As he answers, so weāll remember it.ā
āEvamÄvusoāti kho ÄyasmÄ samiddhi Äyasmato Änandassa paccassosi. āYes, reverend,ā Samiddhi replied.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ ca Änando ÄyasmÄ ca samiddhi yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Then Änanda and Samiddhi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side,
Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yÄvatako ahosi Äyasmato samiddhissa potaliputtena paribbÄjakena saddhiį¹ kathÄsallÄpo taį¹ sabbaį¹ bhagavato Ärocesi. and told him what had happened.
Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ etadavoca: When they had spoken, the Buddha said to Änanda,
ādassanampi kho ahaį¹, Änanda, potaliputtassa paribbÄjakassa nÄbhijÄnÄmi, kuto panevarÅ«paį¹ kathÄsallÄpaį¹? āI donāt recall even seeing the wanderer Potaliputta, Änanda, so how could we have had such a discussion?
IminÄ ca, Änanda, samiddhinÄ moghapurisena potaliputtassa paribbÄjakassa vibhajjabyÄkaraį¹Ä«yo paƱho ekaį¹sena byÄkatoāti. The wanderer Potaliputtaās question should have been answered after analyzing it, but this futile man answered categorically.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, ÄyasmÄ udÄyÄ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable UdÄyÄ« said to him,
āsace pana, bhante, ÄyasmatÄ samiddhinÄ idaį¹ sandhÄya bhÄsitaį¹āāBut perhaps, sir, Venerable Samiddhi spoke in reference to the statement:
yaį¹ kiƱci vedayitaį¹ taį¹ dukkhasmināti. āSuffering includes whatever is felt.āā
Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ Ämantesi: But the Buddha said to Venerable Änanda,
āpassasi no tvaį¹, Änanda, imassa udÄyissa moghapurisassa ummaį¹
gaį¹? āSee what this futile man UdÄyÄ« comes up with?
AƱƱÄsiį¹ kho ahaį¹, Änanda: I knew that
āidÄnevÄyaį¹ udÄyÄ« moghapuriso ummujjamÄno ayoniso ummujjissatÄ«āti. he was coming up with something irrational.
Ädiį¹yeva, Änanda, potaliputtena paribbÄjakena tisso vedanÄ pucchitÄ. Right from the start Potaliputta asked about the three feelings.
SacÄyaį¹, Änanda, samiddhi moghapuriso potaliputtassa paribbÄjakassa evaį¹ puį¹į¹ho evaį¹ byÄkareyya: Suppose the futile man Samiddhi had answered the wanderer Potaliputtaās question like this:
āsaƱcetanikaį¹, Ävuso potaliputta, kammaį¹ katvÄ kÄyena vÄcÄya manasÄ sukhavedanÄ«yaį¹ sukhaį¹ so vedayati; āAfter doing an intentional deed to be experienced as pleasant by way of body, speech, or mind, one feels pleasure.
saƱcetanikaį¹, Ävuso potaliputta, kammaį¹ katvÄ kÄyena vÄcÄya manasÄ dukkhavedanÄ«yaį¹ dukkhaį¹ so vedayati; After doing an intentional deed to be experienced as painful by way of body, speech, or mind, one feels pain.
saƱcetanikaį¹, Ävuso potaliputta, kammaį¹ katvÄ kÄyena vÄcÄya manasÄ adukkhamasukhavedanÄ«yaį¹ adukkhamasukhaį¹ so vedayatÄ«āti. After doing an intentional deed to be experienced as neutral by way of body, speech, or mind, one feels neutral.ā
Evaį¹ byÄkaramÄno kho, Änanda, samiddhi moghapuriso potaliputtassa paribbÄjakassa sammÄ byÄkaramÄno byÄkareyya. Answering in this way, Samiddhi would have rightly answered Potaliputta.
Api ca, Änanda, ke ca aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ bÄlÄ abyattÄ ke ca tathÄgatassa mahÄkammavibhaį¹
gaį¹ jÄnissanti? Still, who are those foolish and incompetent wanderers of other religions to understand the Realized Oneās great analysis of deeds?
Sace tumhe, Änanda, suį¹eyyÄtha tathÄgatassa mahÄkammavibhaį¹
gaį¹ vibhajantassÄāti. If you would all listen, Änanda, I will explain the Realized Oneās great analysis of deeds.ā
āEtassa, bhagavÄ, kÄlo, etassa, sugata, kÄlo āNow is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One!
yaį¹ bhagavÄ mahÄkammavibhaį¹
gaį¹ vibhajeyya. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. Let the Buddha explain the great analysis of deeds. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā
āTena hÄnanda, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, Änanda, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavato paccassosi. āYes, sir,ā Änanda replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āCattÄrome, Änanda, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āÄnanda, these four people are found in the world.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
IdhÄnanda, ekacco puggalo idha pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ« hoti, adinnÄdÄyÄ« hoti, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ« hoti, musÄvÄdÄ« hoti, pisuį¹avÄco hoti, pharusavÄco hoti, samphappalÄpÄ« hoti, abhijjhÄlu hoti, byÄpannacitto hoti, micchÄdiį¹į¹hi hoti. Itās when a person here kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyāre covetous, malicious, and have wrong view.
So kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Idha panÄnanda, ekacco puggalo idha pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ« hoti, adinnÄdÄyÄ« hoti, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ« hoti, musÄvÄdÄ« hoti, pisuį¹avÄco hoti, pharusavÄco hoti, samphappalÄpÄ« hoti, abhijjhÄlu hoti, byÄpannacitto hoti, micchÄdiį¹į¹hi hoti. But some other person here kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyāre covetous, malicious, and have wrong view.
So kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

IdhÄnanda, ekacco samaį¹o vÄ brÄhmaį¹o vÄ ÄtappamanvÄya padhÄnamanvÄya anuyogamanvÄya appamÄdamanvÄya sammÄmanasikÄramanvÄya tathÄrÅ«paį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ phusati yathÄsamÄhite citte dibbena cakkhunÄ visuddhena atikkantamÄnusakena amuį¹ puggalaį¹ passatiāNow, some ascetic or brahmināby dint of keen, resolute, committed, and diligent effort, and right application of mindāexperiences an immersion of the heart of such a kind that it gives rise to clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman. With that clairvoyance they see that person
idha pÄį¹ÄtipÄtiį¹ adinnÄdÄyiį¹ kÄmesumicchÄcÄriį¹ musÄvÄdiį¹ pisuį¹avÄcaį¹ pharusavÄcaį¹ samphappalÄpiį¹ abhijjhÄluį¹ byÄpannacittaį¹ micchÄdiį¹į¹hiį¹ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä passati apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannaį¹. here who killed living creatures, stole, and committed sexual misconduct; who used speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical; and who was covetous, malicious, and had wrong view. And they see that, when their body breaks up, after death, that person is reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
So evamÄha: They say:
āatthi kira, bho, pÄpakÄni kammÄni, atthi duccaritassa vipÄko. āIt seems that there is such a thing as bad deeds, and the result of bad conduct.
AmÄhaį¹ puggalaį¹ addasaį¹ idha pÄį¹ÄtipÄtiį¹ adinnÄdÄyiį¹ ā¦peā¦ micchÄdiį¹į¹hiį¹ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä passÄmi apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannanāti. For I saw a person here who killed living creatures ā¦ and had wrong view. And when their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā
So evamÄha: They say:
āyo kira, bho, pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ« adinnÄdÄyÄ« ā¦peā¦ micchÄdiį¹į¹hi, sabbo so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati. āIt seems that everyone who kills living creatures ā¦ and has wrong view is reborn in hell.
Ye evaį¹ jÄnanti, te sammÄ jÄnanti; ye aƱƱathÄ jÄnanti, micchÄ tesaį¹ ƱÄį¹anāti. Those whose notion is this have the right notion. Those whose notion is otherwise have a wrong notion.ā
Iti so yadeva tassa sÄmaį¹ ƱÄtaį¹ sÄmaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sÄmaį¹ viditaį¹ tadeva tattha thÄmasÄ parÄmÄsÄ abhinivissa voharati: āidameva saccaį¹, moghamaƱƱanāti. And so they obstinately stick to what they have known, seen, and understood for themselves, insisting that: āThis is the only truth, anything else is futile.ā
Idha panÄnanda, ekacco samaį¹o vÄ brÄhmaį¹o vÄ ÄtappamanvÄya padhÄnamanvÄya anuyogamanvÄya appamÄdamanvÄya sammÄmanasikÄramanvÄya tathÄrÅ«paį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ phusati yathÄsamÄhite citte dibbena cakkhunÄ visuddhena atikkantamÄnusakena amuį¹ puggalaį¹ passatiāBut some other ascetic or brahmināby dint of keen, resolute, committed, and diligent effort, and right application of mindāexperiences an immersion of the heart of such a kind that it gives rise to clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman. AmÄhaį¹ puggalaį¹ addasaį¹āidha pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirataį¹ adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹ivirataį¹ ā¦peā¦ sammÄdiį¹į¹hiį¹, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä passÄmi sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapannanāti. For I have seen a person here who refrained from killing living creatures ā¦ and had right view. And I saw that that person was reborn in a heavenly realm.ā

So, Änanda, there are deeds that are ineffective and appear ineffective. There are deeds that are ineffective but appear effective. There are deeds that are effective and appear effective. And there are deeds that are effective but appear ineffective.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
