Piṇḍapātapārisuddhisutta The Purification of Alms The Purification of Almsfood

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard. Thus have I heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. On one occasion the Blessed One was living at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels’ Sanctuary.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: Then in the late afternoon, Sāriputta came out of retreat and went to the Buddha. He bowed and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, Then, when it was evening, the venerable Sāriputta rose from meditation and went to the Blessed One. After paying homage to him, he sat down at one side. The Blessed One then said to him:

“Vippasannāni kho te, sāriputta, indriyāni, parisuddho chavivaṇṇo pariyodāto. “Sāriputta, your faculties are so very clear, and your complexion is pure and bright. “Sāriputta, your faculties are clear. The colour of your skin is pure and bright.

Katamena kho tvaṁ, sāriputta, vihārena etarahi bahulaṁ viharasī”ti? What kind of meditation are you usually practicing these days?” What abiding do you often abide in now, Sāriputta?”

“Suññatāvihārena kho ahaṁ, bhante, etarahi bahulaṁ viharāmī”ti. “Sir, these days I usually practice the meditation on emptiness.” “Now, venerable sir, I often abide in voidness.”

“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta. “Good, good, Sāriputta! “Good, good, Sāriputta!

Mahāpurisavihārena kira tvaṁ, sāriputta, etarahi bahulaṁ viharasi. It seems you usually practice the meditation of a great man. Now, indeed, you often abide in the abiding of a great man.

Mahāpurisavihāro eso, sāriputta, yadidaṁ—For emptiness is the meditation of a great man. For this is the abiding of a great man, namely—

suññatā. voidness.

Tasmātiha, sāriputta, bhikkhu sace ākaṅkheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish: “So, Sāriputta, if a bhikkhu should wish:

‘suññatāvihārena bahulaṁ vihareyyan’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: ‘May I usually practice the meditation on emptiness.’ So they should reflect: ‘May I now often abide in voidness,’ he should consider thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi nu kho me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti? ‘Along the path that I went for alms, or in the place I wandered for alms, or along the path that I returned from alms, was there any desire or greed or hate or delusion or aversion in my heart for sights known by the eye?’ ‘On the path by which I went to the village for alms, or in the place where I wandered for alms, or on the path by which I returned from the almsround, was there any desire, lust, hate, delusion, or aversion in my mind regarding forms cognizable by the eye?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: Suppose that, upon checking, a mendicant knows that If, by so reviewing, he knows thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, atthi me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ. there was such desire or greed or hate or delusion or aversion in their heart, they should make an effort to give up those unskillful qualities. ‘On the path by which I went to the village for alms, or in the place where I wandered for alms, or on the path by which I returned from the almsround, there was desire, lust, hate, delusion, or aversion in my mind regarding forms cognizable by the eye,’ then he should make an effort to abandon those evil unwholesome states.

Sace pana, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: But suppose that, upon checking, a mendicant knows that But if, by reviewing, he knows thus:

‘yena cāhaṁ maggena gāmaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ, yasmiñca padese piṇḍāya acariṁ, yena ca maggena gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamiṁ, natthi me tattha cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu chando vā rāgo vā doso vā moho vā paṭighaṁ vāpi cetaso’ti, tena, sāriputta, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu. there was no such desire or greed or hate or delusion or aversion in their heart, they should meditate with rapture and joy, training day and night in skillful qualities. ‘On the path by which I went to the village for alms, and in the place where I wandered for alms, and on the path by which I returned from the almsround, there was no desire, lust, hate, delusion, or aversion in my mind regarding forms cognizable by the eye,’ then he can abide happy and glad, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: Furthermore, a mendicant should reflect: “Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should consider thus:

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: Suppose that, upon checking, a mendicant knows that If, by reviewing, he knows thus:

Puna caparaṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ: Furthermore, a mendicant should reflect: “Again, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu should consider thus:

‘pahīnā nu kho me pañca kāmaguṇā’ti? ‘Have I given up the five kinds of sensual stimulation?’ ‘Are the five cords of sensual pleasure abandoned in me?’

Sace, sāriputta, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: Suppose that, upon checking, a mendicant knows that If, by reviewing, he knows thus:

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said. That is what the Blessed One said.
