Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ gāthaį¹ abhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œUpanÄ«yati jÄ«vitamappamāyu, ā€œThis life, so very short, is led onward. ā€œLife is swept along, short is the life span;

JarÅ«panÄ«tassa na santi tāį¹‡Ä; One led on to old age has no shelter. No shelters exist for one who has reached old age.

Etaį¹ bhayaį¹ maraį¹‡e pekkhamāno, Seeing this peril in death, Seeing clearly this danger in death,

PuƱƱāni kayirātha sukhāvahānÄ«ā€ti. do good deeds that bring you joy.ā€ One should do deeds of merit that bring happiness. ā€
