Jāgarasutta Awake Awake

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ gāthaį¹ abhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œKati jāgarataį¹ suttā, ā€œHow many sleep among the waking? ā€œHow many are asleep when others are awake?

kati suttesu jāgarā; How many wake among the sleeping? How many are awake when others sleep?

Katibhi rajamādeti, By how many do you gather dust? By how many does one gather dust?

katibhi parisujjhatÄ«ā€ti. By how many are you cleansed?ā€ By how many is one purified?ā€

ā€œPaƱca jāgarataį¹ suttā, ā€œFive sleep among the waking. ā€œFive are asleep when others are awake;

paƱca suttesu jāgarā; Five wake among the sleeping. Five are awake when others sleep.

PaƱcabhi rajamādeti, By five you gather dust. By five things one gathers dust,

paƱcabhi parisujjhatÄ«ā€ti. By five youā€™re cleansed.ā€ By five things one is purified. ā€
