Pajjotasutta Lamps Sources of Light

ā€œKati lokasmiį¹ pajjotā, ā€œHow many lamps are there ā€œHow many sources of light are in the world

Tehi loko pakāsati; that light up the world? By means of which the world is illumined?

Bhagavantaį¹ puį¹­į¹­humāgamma, Weā€™ve come to ask you, worthy sirs: We have come to ask the Blessed One this:

Kathaį¹ jānemu taį¹ mayanā€ti. how are we to understand this?ā€ How are we to understand it?ā€

ā€œCattāro loke pajjotā, ā€œThere are four lamps in the world, ā€œThere are four sources of light in the world;

paƱcamettha na vijjati; a fifth is not found. A fifth one is not found here.

Divā tapati ādicco, The sun blazes by day, The sun shines by day,

rattimābhāti candimā. the moon radiates at night, The moon glows at night,

Atha aggi divārattiį¹, while a fire illuminates both And fire, both by day and at night,

tattha tattha pakāsati; by day and by night. flares up here and there.

Sambuddho tapataį¹ seį¹­į¹­ho, But a Buddha is the best of blazes: But the Buddha is the best of those that shine:

esā ābhā anuttarāā€ti. this is the supreme radiance.ā€ He is the light unsurpassed. ā€
