Mahaddhanasutta Affluent Those of Great Wealth

ā€œMahaddhanā mahābhogā, ā€œThe affluent and the wealthy, ā€œThose of great wealth and property,

raį¹­į¹­havantopi khattiyā; even the aristocrats who rule the land, Even khattiyas who rule the country,

AƱƱamaƱƱābhigijjhanti, are jealous of each other, Look at each other with greedy eyes,

kāmesu analaį¹…katā. insatiable in sensual pleasures. Insatiable in sensual pleasures.

Tesu ussukkajātesu, Among those of such an avid nature, Among these who have become so avid,

bhavasotānusārisu; flowing along the stream of lives, Flowing along in the stream of existence,

Kedha taį¹‡haį¹ pajahiį¹su, who here has given up craving? Who here have abandoned craving?

ke lokasmiį¹ anussukāā€ti. Who in the world is not avid?ā€ Who in the world are no longer avid?ā€

ā€œHitvā agāraį¹ pabbajitā, ā€œHaving given up their home, their child, their cattle, ā€œHaving left their homes and gone forth,

hitvā puttaį¹ pasuį¹ piyaį¹; and all that they love, they went forth. Having left their dear sons and cattle,

Hitvā rāgaƱca dosaƱca, Having given up desire and hate, Having left behind lust and hatred,

avijjaƱca virājiya; having dispelled ignorance, Having expunged ignoranceā€”

KhÄ«į¹‡Äsavā arahanto, the perfected ones with defilements endedā€”The arahants with taints destroyed

te lokasmiį¹ anussukāā€ti. they in the world are not avid.ā€ Are those in the world no longer avid. ā€
