Sādhusutta Good Good

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At Savatthi.

Atha kho sambahulā satullapakāyikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the host of a hundred felicities, lighting up the entire Jetaā€™s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. Then, when the night had advanced, a number of devatās belonging to the Satullapa host, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jetaā€™s Grove, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side.

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Standing to one side, one deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then one devatā, standing to one side, uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSādhu kho mārisa dānaį¹, ā€œGood, sir, is giving! ā€œGood is giving, dear sir!

maccherā ca pamādā ca; Because of stinginess and negligence ā€œThrough stinginess and negligence

Evaį¹ dānaį¹ na dÄ«yati, a gift is not given. A gift is not given.

puƱƱaį¹ ākaį¹…khamānena; Wanting merit, One who knows, desiring merit,

Deyyaį¹ hoti vijānatāā€ti. a smart person would give.ā€ Should surely give a gift. ā€

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then another devatā uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSādhu kho mārisa dānaį¹, ā€œGood, sir, is giving! ā€œGood is giving, dear sir!

Api ca appakasmimpi sāhu dānaį¹. Even when one has little, giving is good. And further: Even when thereā€™s little, giving is good.

Appasmeke pavecchanti, Some who have little are happy to provide, ā€œSome provide from what little they have,

bahuneke na dicchare; while some who have much donā€™t wish to give. Others who are affluent donā€™t like to give.

Appasmā dakkhiį¹‡Ä dinnā, An offering given from little An offering given from what little one has

sahassena samaį¹ mitāā€ti. is multiplied a thousand times.ā€ Is worth a thousand times its value. ā€

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then another devatā uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSādhu kho mārisa dānaį¹, ā€œGood, sir, is giving! ā€œGood is giving, dear sir!

Appakasmimpi sāhu dānaį¹; Even when one has little, giving is good. Even when thereā€™s little, giving is good.

Api ca saddhāyapi sāhu dānaį¹, And itā€™s also good to give out of faith. And further: When done with faith too, giving is good.

DānaƱca yuddhaƱca samānamāhu; Giving and warfare are similar, they say, ā€œGiving and warfare are similar, they say:

Appāpi santā bahuke jinanti, for even a few of the good may conquer the many. A few good ones conquer many.

Appampi ce saddahāno dadāti; If a faithful person gives even a little, If one with faith gives even a little,

Teneva so hoti sukhÄ« paratthāā€ti. it still brings them happiness in the hereafter.ā€ He thereby becomes happy in the other world. ā€

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then another devatā uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSādhu kho mārisa dānaį¹, ā€œGood, sir, is giving! ā€œGood is giving, dear sir!

Appakasmimpi sāhu dānaį¹; Even when one has little, giving is good. Even when thereā€™s little, giving is good.

Saddhāyapi sāhu dānaį¹, And itā€™s also good to give out of faith. When done with faith too, giving is good.

Api ca dhammaladdhassāpi sāhu dānaį¹. And itā€™s also good to give legitimate wealth. And further: The gift of a righteous gain is also good.

Yo dhammaladdhassa dadāti dānaį¹, A man who gives legitimate wealth, ā€œWhen he gives a gift of a righteous gain

Uį¹­į¹­hānavÄ«riyādhigatassa jantu; earned by his efforts and initiative, Obtained by exertion and energy,

Atikkamma so vetaraį¹‡iį¹ yamassa, has passed over Yamaā€™s Vetaraį¹‡i River; Having passed over Yamaā€™s Vetaraį¹‡i River,

Dibbāni į¹­hānāni upeti maccoā€ti. that mortal arrives at celestial fields.ā€ That mortal arrives at celestial states. ā€

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then another devatā uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSādhu kho mārisa dānaį¹, ā€œGood, sir, is giving! ā€œGood is giving, dear sir!

Appakasmimpi sāhu dānaį¹; Even when one has little, giving is good. Even when thereā€™s little, giving is good.

Saddhāyapi sāhu dānaį¹, And itā€™s also good to give out of faith. When done with faith too, giving is good;

Dhammaladdhassāpi sāhu dānaį¹; And itā€™s also good to give legitimate wealth. The gift of a righteous gain is also good.

Api ca viceyya dānampi sāhu dānaį¹. And itā€™s also good to give intelligently. And further: Giving discriminately too is good.

Viceyya dānaį¹ sugatappasatthaį¹, The Holy One praises giving intelligently ā€œGiving discriminately is praised by the Fortunate Oneā€”

Ye dakkhiį¹‡eyyā idha jÄ«valoke; to those worthy of offerings here in the world of the living. To those worthy of offerings

Etesu dinnāni mahapphalāni, Whatā€™s given to these is very fruitful, What is given to them bears great fruit

BÄ«jāni vuttāni yathā sukhetteā€ti. like seeds sown in a fertile field.ā€ Like seeds sown in a fertile field. ā€

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then another devatā uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSādhu kho mārisa dānaį¹, ā€œGood, sir, is giving! ā€œGood is giving, dear sir!

Appakasmimpi sāhu dānaį¹; Even when one has little, giving is good. Even when thereā€™s little, giving is good.

Saddhāyapi sāhu dānaį¹, And itā€™s also good to give out of faith. When done with faith too, giving is good;

Dhammaladdhassāpi sāhu dānaį¹; And itā€™s also good to give legitimate wealth. The gift of a righteous gain is also good.

Viceyya dānampi sāhu dānaį¹, And itā€™s also good to give intelligently. Giving with discretion too is good.

Api ca pāį¹‡esupi sādhu saį¹yamo. And itā€™s also good to be restrained when it comes to living creatures. And further: Restraint towards living beings is also good.

Yo pāį¹‡abhÅ«tāni aheį¹­hayaį¹ caraį¹, One who lives without harming any living being ā€œOne who fares harming no living beings

ParÅ«pavādā na karonti pāpaį¹; does no bad because of othersā€™ blame. Does no evil from fear of othersā€™ censure.

BhÄ«ruį¹ pasaį¹santi na hi tattha sÅ«raį¹, Were that the case they praise the coward, not the brave; In that they praise the timid, not the brave,

Bhayā hi santo na karonti pāpanā€ti. for the virtuous do no bad out of fear.ā€ For out of fear the good do no evil. ā€

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then another deity said to the Buddha, Then another devatā said to the Blessed One:

ā€œkassa nu kho, bhagavā, subhāsitanā€ti? ā€œSir, who has spoken well?ā€ ā€œWhich one, Blessed One, has spoken well?ā€

ā€œSabbāsaį¹ vo subhāsitaį¹ pariyāyena, api ca mamapi suį¹‡Äthaā€”ā€œYouā€™ve all spoken well in your own way. However, listen to me also: ā€œYou have all spoken well in a way.

Saddhā hi dānaį¹ bahudhā pasatthaį¹, Surely giving is praised in many ways ā€œSurely giving is praised in many ways,

Dānā ca kho dhammapadaį¹va seyyo; but the path of the teaching is better than giving, But the path of Dhamma surpasses giving.

Pubbe ca hi pubbatare ca santo, for in days old and older still, For in the past and even long ago,

Nibbānamevajjhagamuį¹ sapaƱƱāā€ti. the wise and virtuous even attained extinction.ā€ The good and wise ones attained Nibbāna. ā€
