Atha kho sambahulÄ satullapakÄyikÄ devatÄyo abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹su. Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the host of a hundred felicities, lighting up the entire Jetaās Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. Then, when the night had advanced, a number of devatÄs belonging to the Satullapa host, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jetaās Grove, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side.

āSÄdhu kho mÄrisa dÄnaį¹, āGood, sir, is giving! āGood is giving, dear sir!
maccherÄ ca pamÄdÄ ca; Because of stinginess and negligence āThrough stinginess and negligence
Evaį¹ dÄnaį¹ na dÄ«yati, a gift is not given. A gift is not given.
puƱƱaį¹ Äkaį¹
khamÄnena; Wanting merit, One who knows, desiring merit,
Deyyaį¹ hoti vijÄnatÄāti. a smart person would give.ā Should surely give a gift. ā

Api ca appakasmimpi sÄhu dÄnaį¹. Even when one has little, giving is good. And further: Even when thereās little, giving is good.
Appasmeke pavecchanti, Some who have little are happy to provide, āSome provide from what little they have,
bahuneke na dicchare; while some who have much donāt wish to give. Others who are affluent donāt like to give.
AppasmÄ dakkhiį¹Ä dinnÄ, An offering given from little An offering given from what little one has
sahassena samaį¹ mitÄāti. is multiplied a thousand times.ā Is worth a thousand times its value. ā

Appakasmimpi sÄhu dÄnaį¹; Even when one has little, giving is good. Even when thereās little, giving is good.
Api ca saddhÄyapi sÄhu dÄnaį¹, And itās also good to give out of faith. And further: When done with faith too, giving is good.
DÄnaƱca yuddhaƱca samÄnamÄhu; Giving and warfare are similar, they say, āGiving and warfare are similar, they say:
AppÄpi santÄ bahuke jinanti, for even a few of the good may conquer the many. A few good ones conquer many.
Appampi ce saddahÄno dadÄti; If a faithful person gives even a little, If one with faith gives even a little,
Teneva so hoti sukhÄ« paratthÄāti. it still brings them happiness in the hereafter.ā He thereby becomes happy in the other world. ā

SaddhÄyapi sÄhu dÄnaį¹, And itās also good to give out of faith. When done with faith too, giving is good.
Api ca dhammaladdhassÄpi sÄhu dÄnaį¹. And itās also good to give legitimate wealth. And further: The gift of a righteous gain is also good.
Yo dhammaladdhassa dadÄti dÄnaį¹, A man who gives legitimate wealth, āWhen he gives a gift of a righteous gain
Uį¹į¹hÄnavÄ«riyÄdhigatassa jantu; earned by his efforts and initiative, Obtained by exertion and energy,
Atikkamma so vetaraį¹iį¹ yamassa, has passed over Yamaās Vetaraį¹i River; Having passed over Yamaās Vetaraį¹i River,
DibbÄni į¹hÄnÄni upeti maccoāti. that mortal arrives at celestial fields.ā That mortal arrives at celestial states. ā

Viceyya dÄnaį¹ sugatappasatthaį¹, The Holy One praises giving intelligently āGiving discriminately is praised by the Fortunate Oneā
Ye dakkhiį¹eyyÄ idha jÄ«valoke; to those worthy of offerings here in the world of the living. To those worthy of offerings
Etesu dinnÄni mahapphalÄni, Whatās given to these is very fruitful, What is given to them bears great fruit
BÄ«jÄni vuttÄni yathÄ sukhetteāti. like seeds sown in a fertile field.ā Like seeds sown in a fertile field. ā

Viceyya dÄnampi sÄhu dÄnaį¹, And itās also good to give intelligently. Giving with discretion too is good.
Api ca pÄį¹esupi sÄdhu saį¹yamo. And itās also good to be restrained when it comes to living creatures. And further: Restraint towards living beings is also good.
Yo pÄį¹abhÅ«tÄni aheį¹hayaį¹ caraį¹, One who lives without harming any living being āOne who fares harming no living beings
ParÅ«pavÄdÄ na karonti pÄpaį¹; does no bad because of othersā blame. Does no evil from fear of othersā censure.
BhÄ«ruį¹ pasaį¹santi na hi tattha sÅ«raį¹, Were that the case they praise the coward, not the brave; In that they praise the timid, not the brave,
BhayÄ hi santo na karonti pÄpanāti. for the virtuous do no bad out of fear.ā For out of fear the good do no evil. ā
Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then another deity said to the Buddha, Then another devatÄ said to the Blessed One:
ākassa nu kho, bhagavÄ, subhÄsitanāti? āSir, who has spoken well?ā āWhich one, Blessed One, has spoken well?ā
āSabbÄsaį¹ vo subhÄsitaį¹ pariyÄyena, api ca mamapi suį¹ÄthaāāYouāve all spoken well in your own way. However, listen to me also: āYou have all spoken well in a way.
SaddhÄ hi dÄnaį¹ bahudhÄ pasatthaį¹, Surely giving is praised in many ways āSurely giving is praised in many ways,
DÄnÄ ca kho dhammapadaį¹va seyyo; but the path of the teaching is better than giving, But the path of Dhamma surpasses giving.
Pubbe ca hi pubbatare ca santo, for in days old and older still, For in the past and even long ago,
NibbÄnamevajjhagamuį¹ sapaƱƱÄāti. the wise and virtuous even attained extinction.ā The good and wise ones attained NibbÄna. ā
