Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard. Thus have I heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹­Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesali in the Great Wood in the Hall with the Peaked Roof.

Atha kho kokanadā pajjunnassa dhÄ«tā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ mahāvanaį¹ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Then, late at night, the beautiful Kokanadā, Pajjunnaā€™s daughter, lighting up the entire Great Wood, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then, when the night had advanced, Kokanada, Pajjunnaā€™s daughter, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Great Wood, approached the Blessed One.

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā kokanadā pajjunnassa dhÄ«tā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi: and recited these verses in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Having approached, she paid homage to the Blessed One, stood to one side, and recited these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œVesāliyaį¹ vane viharantaį¹, ā€œStaying in the woods of VesālÄ« Dwelling in the woods at Vesali.

Aggaį¹ sattassa sambuddhaį¹; is the Buddha, best of creation. ā€œI worship the Buddha, the best of beings,

Kokanadāhamasmi abhivande, Kokanadā am I who worships him, Kokanada am I,

Kokanadā pajjunnassa dhÄ«tā. Kokanadā, Pajjunaā€™s daughter. Kokanada, Pajjunnaā€™s daughter.

Sutameva pure āsi, Previously I had only heard ā€œEarlier I had only heard

Dhammo cakkhumatānubuddho; the teaching realized by the Clear-eyed One. that the Dhamma has been realized by the One with Vision;

Sāhaį¹ dāni sakkhi jānāmi, But now I know it as a witness But now I know it as a witness

Munino desayato sugatassa. while the sage, the Holy One teaches. While the Sage, the Fortunate One, teaches.

Ye keci ariyaį¹ dhammaį¹, There are simpletons who go about Those who, the noble Dhamma,

Vigarahantā caranti dummedhā; denouncing the teaching of the noble ones. ā€œThose ignorant people who go about critizing

Upenti roruvaį¹ ghoraį¹, They fall into the terrible Hell of Screams Pass on to the terrible Roruva hell

Cirarattaį¹ dukkhaį¹ anubhavanti. where they suffer long. And experience suffering for a long time.

Ye ca kho ariye dhamme, There are those who have found acceptance and peace In regard to the noble Dhamma,

Khantiyā upasamena upetā; in the teaching of the noble ones. ā€œBut those who have peace and acquiescence

Pahāya mānusaį¹ dehaį¹, After giving up this human body, On discarding the human body,

Devakāyaį¹ paripÅ«ressantÄ«ā€ti. they swell the hosts of gods.ā€ Will fill the host of devas. ā€
