Chetvāsutta Having Killed Slain Having Slain

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: As she was standing to one side, a devatā recited this verse to the Blessed One: Standing to one side, that deity addressed the Buddha in verse: Standing to one side, that devatā addressed the Blessed One in verse:

“Kiṁsu chetvā sukhaṁ seti, “Having killed what do you sleep in ease? “When what is slain do you sleep at ease? “Having slain what does one sleep soundly?

kiṁsu chetvā na socati; Having killed what do you not grieve? When what is slain is there no sorrow? Having slain what does one not sorrow?

Kissassu ekadhammassa, Of the slaying of what one thing What is the one thing, Gotama, What is the one thing,

vadhaṁ rocesi gotamā”ti. does Gotama approve?” whose killing you approve?” O Gotama, Whose killing you approve?”

“Kodhaṁ chetvā sukhaṁ seti, “Having killed anger you sleep in ease. “When anger’s slain you sleep at ease. “Having slain anger, one sleeps soundly;

kodhaṁ chetvā na socati; Having killed anger you do not grieve. When anger’s slain there is no sorrow. Having slain anger, one does not sorrow;

Kodhassa visamūlassa, The noble ones praise the slaying of anger Anger has a poisonous root The killing of anger,

madhuraggassa devate; —with its honeyed crest and a sweet tip, O deity. O devatā, With its poisoned root and honeyed tip:

Vadhaṁ ariyā pasaṁsanti, & poison root— The noble ones praise its killing, This is the killing the noble ones praise,

tañhi chetvā na socatī”ti. for having killed it you do not grieve.”for when it’s slain there is no sorrow.” For having slain that, one does not sorrow. ”
