Najīratisutta Getting Old Does Not Decay

ā€œKiį¹ jÄ«rati kiį¹ na jÄ«rati, ā€œWhat gets old, what doesnā€™t grow old? ā€œWhat decays, what does not decay?

kiį¹su uppathoti vuccati; Whatā€™s called a deviation? What is declared the deviant path?

Kiį¹su dhammānaį¹ paripantho, Whatā€™s a roadblock for skillful qualities? What is the impediment to wholesome states?

kiį¹su rattindivakkhayo; What is ending day and night? What undergoes destruction night and day?

Kiį¹ malaį¹ brahmacariyassa, Whatā€™s the stain of celibacy? What is the stain of the holy life?

kiį¹ sinānamanodakaį¹. Whatā€™s the waterless bath? What is the bath without water?

Kati lokasmiį¹ chiddāni, How many holes are there in the world, ā€œHow many fissures are there in the world

yattha vittaį¹ na tiį¹­į¹­hati; where oneā€™s wealth leaks out? Wherein the mind does not stand firm?

Bhagavantaį¹ puį¹­į¹­humāgamma, Weā€™ve come to ask you, sir: Weā€™ve come to ask the Blessed One this:

kathaį¹ jānemu taį¹ mayanā€ti. how are we to understand this?ā€ How are we to understand it?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paį¹ jÄ«rati maccānaį¹, ā€œThe physical form of mortals gets old, ā€œThe physical form of mortals decays,

nāmagottaį¹ na jÄ«rati; but their name and clan donā€™t. Their name and clan does not decay.

Rāgo uppathoti vuccati. Lust is called a deviation, Lust is declared the deviant path,

Lobho dhammānaį¹ paripantho, and greed is a roadblock for skillful qualities. Greed the impediment to wholesome states.

Vayo rattindivakkhayo; Youth is ending day and night. ā€œLife undergoes destruction night and day;

ItthÄ« malaį¹ brahmacariyassa, Women are the stain of celibacy, Women are the stain of the holy life:

Etthāyaį¹ sajjate pajā; to which this generation clings. Hereā€™s where menfolk are enmeshed.

Tapo ca brahmacariyaƱca, Fervor and celibacy Austerity and the holy lifeā€”

Taį¹ sinānamanodakaį¹. are the waterless bath. That is the bath without water.

Cha lokasmiį¹ chiddāni, There are six holes in the world, ā€œThere are six fissures in the world

yattha vittaį¹ na tiį¹­į¹­hati; where oneā€™s wealth leaks out: Wherein the mind does not stand firm:

ĀlasyaƱca pamādo ca, laziness and negligence, Laziness and negligence,

anuį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ asaį¹yamo; lack of initiative and lack of restraint, Indolence, lack of self-control,

Niddā tandÄ« ca te chidde, sleepiness and sloth. Drowsiness and lethargyā€”

sabbaso taį¹ vivajjayeā€ti. You should completely get rid of these holes!ā€ Avoid these fissures completely. ā€
