Māghasutta With Māgha MaĢ„gha

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At SaĢ„vatthiĢ„.

Atha kho māgho devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡o kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Then, late at night, the glorious god Māgha, lighting up the entire Jetaā€™s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then, when the night had advanced, the young deva MaĢ„gha, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jetaā€™s Grove, approached the Blessed One.

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hito kho māgho devaputto bhagavantaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: and addressed the Buddha in verse: Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One, stood to one side, > and addressed the Blessed One in verse:

ā€œKiį¹su chetvā sukhaį¹ seti, ā€œWhen what is incinerated do you sleep at ease? 146 257 ā€œHaving slain what does one sleep soundly?

kiį¹su chetvā na socati; When what is incinerated is there no sorrow? Having slain what does one not sorrow?

Kissassu ekadhammassa, What is the one thing What is the one thing,

vadhaį¹ rocesi gotamāā€ti. whose killing you approve?ā€ O Gotama, Whose killing you approve?ā€

ā€œKodhaį¹ chetvā sukhaį¹ seti, ā€œWhen angerā€™s incinerated you sleep at ease. ā€œHaving slain anger, one sleeps soundly;

kodhaį¹ chetvā na socati; When angerā€™s incinerated there is no sorrow. Having slain anger, one does not sorrow;

Kodhassa visamūlassa, Anger has a poisonous root, The killing of anger,

madhuraggassa vatrabhÅ«; and a honey tip, O slayer of the Constrictor. With its poisoned root and honeyed tip, O VatrabhuĢ„,

Vadhaį¹ ariyā pasaį¹santi, The noble ones praise its killing, This is the killing the noble ones praise,

taƱhi chetvā na socatÄ«ā€ti. for when itā€™s incinerated there is no sorrow.ā€ For having slain that, one does not sorrow. ā€
