Atha kho dÄmali devaputto abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹o kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Then DÄmali the devaās son, in the far extreme of the night, his extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jetaās Grove, went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, stood to one side. Then, late at night, the glorious godling DÄmali, lighting up the entire Jetaās Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then, when the night had advanced, the young deva DaĢmali, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jetaās Grove, approached the Blessed One.
Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho dÄmali devaputto bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: As he was standing there, he recited these verses in the Blessed Oneās presence: and spoke this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One, stood to one side, and recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
āKaraį¹Ä«yametaį¹ brÄhmaį¹ena, āThis should be done by the brahman āThis is what should be done by a brahmin: āThis should be done by the brahmin:
PadhÄnaį¹ akilÄsunÄ; exerting himself relentlessly: unrelenting striving. Striving without weariness,
KÄmÄnaį¹ vippahÄnena, Abandoning sensuality, Then, with the giving up of sensual pleasures, That by his abandoning of sensual desires
Na tenÄsÄ«sate bhavanāti. he should not, through that, wish for becoming.ā they wonāt hope to be reborn.ā He does not yearn for existence. ā
āNatthi kiccaį¹ brÄhmaį¹assa, āFor the brahman, thereās no duty, āThe brahmin has nothing left to do,ā āFor the brahmin there is no task to be done,
(dÄmalÄ«ti bhagavÄ) [DÄmali,ā said the Blessed One,] said the Buddha to DÄmali, [O DaĢmali, ā said the Blessed One],
Katakicco hi brÄhmaį¹o; āfor the brahmanās duty is done. āfor theyāve completed their task. āFor the brahmin has done what should be done.
YÄva na gÄdhaį¹ labhati nadÄ«su, As long as he hasnāt gained a footing in the river, So long as a personage fails to gain a footing in the river, While he has not gained a footing in the river,
ÄyÅ«hati sabbagattebhi jantu; a man will strain with all his limbs. they swim with every limb. A man will strain with all his limbs;
GÄdhaƱca laddhÄna thale į¹hito yo, But when heās gained a footing and is standing on firm ground, But someone who has gained a footing and stands on dry land But a footing gained, standing on the ground,
NÄyÅ«hatÄ« pÄragato hi sova. he doesnāt strain, for heās gone beyond. need not swim, for they have reached the far shore. He need not strain for he has gone beyond.
EsÅ«pamÄ dÄmali brÄhmaį¹assa, This, DÄmali, is a simile for the brahmanā DÄmali, this is a simile for the brahmin, āThis is a simile for the brahmin, O DaĢmali,
KhÄ«į¹Äsavassa nipakassa jhÄyino; effluents ended, masterful, doing jhÄna: alert, a meditator who has ended defilements. For the taintless one, the discreet meditator.
Pappuyya jÄtimaraį¹assa antaį¹, Having reached the end of birth & death, Since theyāve reached the end of rebirth and death, Having reached the end of birth and death,
NÄyÅ«hatÄ« pÄragato hi soāti. he doesnāt strain, for heās gone beyond.āthey need not swim, for they have reached the far shore.ā He need not strain for he has gone beyond. ā
