Subrahmasutta Subrahma the Deva’s Son With Subrahmā Subrahmā
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho subrahmā devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Standing to one side, Subrahma the deva’s son recited this verse to the Blessed One: Standing to one side, the godling Subrahmā addressed the Buddha in verse: Standing to one side, the young deva Subrahmā addressed the Blessed One in verse:
“Niccaṁ utrastamidaṁ cittaṁ, “Constantly troubled is this mind, “This mind is always anxious, “Always frightened is this mind,
niccaṁ ubbiggamidaṁ mano; constantly trembling this heart, this mind is always stressed The mind is always agitated
Anuppannesu kicchesu, over duties that have yet to arise, about stresses that haven’t arisen About unarisen problems
atho uppatitesu ca; and those already arisen. and those that have. And about arisen ones.
Sace atthi anutrastaṁ, If there is an Untroubled, If there is a state free of anxiety, If there exists release from fear,
taṁ me akkhāhi pucchito”ti. point it out to me, when asked.” please answer my question.” Being asked, please declare it to me.”
“Nāññatra bojjhā tapasā, “Apart from the factors for awakening, austerity, “Not without understanding and fervor, “Not apart from enlightenment and austerity,
nāññatrindriyasaṁvarā; apart from sense-faculty restraint, not without restraining the sense faculties, Not apart from restraint of the sense faculties,
Nāññatra sabbanissaggā, apart from relinquishing the all, not without letting go of everything, Not apart from relinquishing all,
sotthiṁ passāmi pāṇinan”ti. I see no safety for living beings.” do I see safety for living creatures.” Do I see any safety for living beings.”
Idamavoca …pe… That is what the Blessed One said… That is what the Buddha said. … This is what the Blessed One said…
tatthevantaradhāyīti. the deva disappeared right there.The godling vanished right there. He [the young deva] disappeared right there.
