Uttarasutta Uttara the Deva’s Son With Uttara Uttara
Rājagahanidānaṁ. Near Rājagaha. At Rājagaha. Setting at Rājagaha.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho uttaro devaputto bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: As he was standing to one side, Uttara the deva’s son recited this verse in the Blessed One’s presence: Standing to one side, the godling Uttara spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, the young deva Uttara recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“Upanīyati jīvitamappamāyu, “Life is swept along, next-to-nothing its span. “This life, so very short, is led onward. “Life is swept along, short is the life span;
Jarūpanītassa na santi tāṇā; For one swept on by aging no shelters exist. One led on to old age has no shelter. No shelters exist for one who has reached old age.
Etaṁ bhayaṁ maraṇe pekkhamāno, Perceiving this danger in death, Seeing this peril in death, Seeing clearly this danger in death,
Puññāni kayirātha sukhāvahānī”ti. one should do deeds of merit that bring about bliss.” do good deeds that bring you joy.” One should do deeds of merit that bring happiness. ”
