Atha kho rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha, Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him:
ākati nu kho, bhante, purisassa dhammÄ ajjhattaį¹ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti ahitÄya dukkhÄya aphÄsuvihÄrÄyÄāti? āSir, how many things arise inside a person for their harm, suffering, and discomfort?ā āVenerable sir, how many things are there which, when they arise within a person, arise for his harm, suffering, and discomfort?ā
āTayo kho, mahÄrÄja, purisassa dhammÄ ajjhattaį¹ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti ahitÄya dukkhÄya aphÄsuvihÄrÄya. āGreat king, three things arise inside a person for their harm, suffering, and discomfort. āThere are, great king, three things which, when they arise within a person, arise for his harm, suffering, and discomfort.
Katame tayo? What three? What are the three?
Lobho kho, mahÄrÄja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaį¹ uppajjamÄno uppajjati ahitÄya dukkhÄya aphÄsuvihÄrÄya. Greed, Greed, great king, when arises within a person, arise for his harm, suffering, and discomfort.
Doso kho, mahÄrÄja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaį¹ uppajjamÄno uppajjati ahitÄya dukkhÄya aphÄsuvihÄrÄya. hate, Hatred great king, when arises within a person, arise for his harm, suffering, and discomfort.
Moho kho, mahÄrÄja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaį¹ uppajjamÄno uppajjati ahitÄya dukkhÄya aphÄsuvihÄrÄya. and delusion. Delusion great king, when arises within a person, arise for his harm, suffering, and discomfort.
Ime kho, mahÄrÄja, tayo purisassa dhammÄ ajjhattaį¹ uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti ahitÄya dukkhÄya aphÄsuvihÄrÄyÄāti. purisaį¹ pÄpacetasaį¹; have arisen inside oneself, Arisen from within oneself,
Hiį¹santi attasambhÅ«tÄ, they harm a person of wicked heart, Injure the person of evil mind
tacasÄraį¹va samphalanāti. as a reed is destroyed by its own fruit.ā As its own fruit destroys the reed.
