Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, King Pasenadi said to the Buddha, Sitting to one side, King Pasenadi of Kosala said to the Blessed One:
āidha mayhaį¹, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi: āJust now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind. āHere, venerable sir, while I was alone in seclusion, a reflection arose in my mind thus:
ākesaį¹ nu kho rakkhito attÄ, kesaį¹ arakkhito attÄāti? āWho are those who protect themselves? And who are those who donāt protect themselves?ā āWho now protect themselves and who leave themselves unprotected?ā
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhante, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me: Then, venerable sir, it occurred to me:
āye kho keci kÄyena duccaritaį¹ caranti, vÄcÄya duccaritaį¹ caranti, manasÄ duccaritaį¹ caranti; āThose who do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind āThose who engage in misconduct of body, speech, and mind
tesaį¹ arakkhito attÄ. donāt protect themselves. leave themselves unprotected.
KiƱcÄpi te hatthikÄyo vÄ rakkheyya, assakÄyo vÄ rakkheyya, rathakÄyo vÄ rakkheyya, pattikÄyo vÄ rakkheyya; Even if theyāre protected by a company of elephants, cavalry, chariots, or infantry, Even though a company of elephant troops may protect them, or a company of cavalry, or a company of chariot troops, or a company of infantry,
atha kho tesaį¹ arakkhito attÄ. they still donāt protect themselves. still they leave themselves unprotected.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that? For what reason?
BÄhirÄ hesÄ rakkhÄ, nesÄ rakkhÄ ajjhattikÄ; Because such protection is exterior, not interior. Because that protection is external, not internal;
tasmÄ tesaį¹ arakkhito attÄ. Thatās why they donāt protect themselves. therefore they leave themselves unprotected.
Ye ca kho keci kÄyena sucaritaį¹ caranti, vÄcÄya sucaritaį¹ caranti, manasÄ sucaritaį¹ caranti; Those who do good things by way of body, speech, and mind But those who engage in good conduct of body, speech, and mind

KiƱcÄpi te neva hatthikÄyo rakkheyya, na assakÄyo rakkheyya, na rathakÄyo rakkheyya, na pattikÄyo rakkheyya; Even if theyāre not protected by a company of elephants, cavalry, chariots, or infantry, Even though no company of elephant troops protects them, nor a company of cavalry, nor a company of charioteers, nor a company of infantry,

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that? For what reason?
AjjhattikÄ hesÄ rakkhÄ, nesÄ rakkhÄ bÄhirÄ; Because such protection is interior, not exterior. Because that protection is internal, not external;
tasmÄ tesaį¹ rakkhito attÄāāti. Thatās why they do protect themselves.āā therefore they protect themselves. āā
āEvametaį¹, mahÄrÄja, evametaį¹, mahÄrÄja. āThatās so true, great king! Thatās so true!ā said the Buddha. And he repeated the kingās statement, adding: āSo it is, great king! So it is, great king!ā

Sabbattha saį¹vuto lajjÄ«, A sincere person, restrained everywhere, Conscientious, everywhere restrained,
