Attarakkhitasutta Self-Protected Self-Protected

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At SaĢ„vatthiĢ„.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, King Pasenadi said to the Buddha, Sitting to one side, King Pasenadi of Kosala said to the Blessed One:

ā€œidha mayhaį¹, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹­isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ā€œJust now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind. ā€œHere, venerable sir, while I was alone in seclusion, a reflection arose in my mind thus:

ā€˜kesaį¹ nu kho rakkhito attā, kesaį¹ arakkhito attāā€™ti? ā€˜Who are those who protect themselves? And who are those who donā€™t protect themselves?ā€™ ā€˜Who now protect themselves and who leave themselves unprotected?ā€™

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhante, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me: Then, venerable sir, it occurred to me:

ā€˜ye kho keci kāyena duccaritaį¹ caranti, vācāya duccaritaį¹ caranti, manasā duccaritaį¹ caranti; ā€˜Those who do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind ā€˜Those who engage in misconduct of body, speech, and mind

tesaį¹ arakkhito attā. donā€™t protect themselves. leave themselves unprotected.

KiƱcāpi te hatthikāyo vā rakkheyya, assakāyo vā rakkheyya, rathakāyo vā rakkheyya, pattikāyo vā rakkheyya; Even if theyā€™re protected by a company of elephants, cavalry, chariots, or infantry, Even though a company of elephant troops may protect them, or a company of cavalry, or a company of chariot troops, or a company of infantry,

atha kho tesaį¹ arakkhito attā. they still donā€™t protect themselves. still they leave themselves unprotected.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that? For what reason?

Bāhirā hesā rakkhā, nesā rakkhā ajjhattikā; Because such protection is exterior, not interior. Because that protection is external, not internal;

tasmā tesaį¹ arakkhito attā. Thatā€™s why they donā€™t protect themselves. therefore they leave themselves unprotected.

Ye ca kho keci kāyena sucaritaį¹ caranti, vācāya sucaritaį¹ caranti, manasā sucaritaį¹ caranti; Those who do good things by way of body, speech, and mind But those who engage in good conduct of body, speech, and mind

tesaį¹ rakkhito attā. do protect themselves. protect themselves.

KiƱcāpi te neva hatthikāyo rakkheyya, na assakāyo rakkheyya, na rathakāyo rakkheyya, na pattikāyo rakkheyya; Even if theyā€™re not protected by a company of elephants, cavalry, chariots, or infantry, Even though no company of elephant troops protects them, nor a company of cavalry, nor a company of charioteers, nor a company of infantry,

atha kho tesaį¹ rakkhito attā. they still protect themselves. still they protect themselves.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that? For what reason?

Ajjhattikā hesā rakkhā, nesā rakkhā bāhirā; Because such protection is interior, not exterior. Because that protection is internal, not external;

tasmā tesaį¹ rakkhito attāā€™ā€ti. Thatā€™s why they do protect themselves.ā€™ā€ therefore they protect themselves. ā€™ā€

ā€œEvametaį¹, mahārāja, evametaį¹, mahārāja. ā€œThatā€™s so true, great king! Thatā€™s so true!ā€ said the Buddha. And he repeated the kingā€™s statement, adding: ā€œSo it is, great king! So it is, great king!ā€

Ye hi keci, mahārāja, kāyena duccaritaį¹ caranti ā€¦peā€¦

Bāhirā hesā, mahārāja, rakkhā, nesā rakkhā ajjhattikā;

tasmā tesaį¹ arakkhito attā.

Ye hi keci, mahārāja, kāyena sucaritaį¹ caranti, vācāya sucaritaį¹ caranti, manasā sucaritaį¹ caranti;

tesaį¹ rakkhito attā.

KiƱcāpi te neva hatthikāyo rakkheyya, na assakāyo rakkheyya, na rathakāyo rakkheyya, na pattikāyo rakkheyya;

atha kho tesaį¹ rakkhito attā.

Ajjhattikā hesā, mahārāja, rakkhā, nesā rakkhā bāhirā;

tasmā tesaį¹ rakkhito attāā€ti.

Idamavoca ā€¦peā€¦

ā€œKāyena saį¹varo sādhu, ā€œRestraint of the body is good; ā€œGood is restraint with the body,

sādhu vācāya saį¹varo; restraint of speech is good; Restraint by speech is also good;

Manasā saį¹varo sādhu, restraint of mind is good; Good is restraint with the mind,

sādhu sabbattha saį¹varo; everywhere, restraint is good. Restraint everywhere is good.

Sabbattha saį¹vuto lajjÄ«, A sincere person, restrained everywhere, Conscientious, everywhere restrained,

rakkhitoti pavuccatÄ«ā€ti. is said to be ā€˜protectedā€™.ā€ One is said to be protected. ā€
