gÄ«bhÅ«tÄnaį¹ paricÄrayamÄnÄnaį¹ ayamantarÄkathÄ udapÄdi: Now at that time five kings headed by Pasenadi were amusing themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sensual stimulation, and this discussion came up among them: Now on that occasion five kings headed by King Pasenadi were enjoying themselves supplied and endowed with the five cords of sensual pleasure when this conversation arose among them:
ākiį¹ nu kho kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti? āWhatās the best of sensual pleasures?ā āWhat is the chief of sensual pleasures?ā

ārÅ«pÄ kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti. āSights are the best of sensual pleasures!ā āForms are the chief of sensual pleasures. ā
Ekacce evamÄhaį¹su: Others said, Some said:
āsaddÄ kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti. āSounds are best!ā āSounds are the chief. ā
Ekacce evamÄhaį¹su: Others said,
āgandhÄ kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti. āSmells are best!ā āOdours are the chief. ā
Ekacce evamÄhaį¹su: Others said,
ārasÄ kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti. āTastes are best!ā āTastes are the chief. ā

āphoį¹į¹habbÄ kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti. āTouches are best!ā āTactile objects are the chief. ā
Yato kho te rÄjÄno nÄsakkhiį¹su aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ saƱƱÄpetuį¹. Since those kings were unable to persuade each other, Since those kings were unable to convince one another,
Atha kho rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo te rÄjÄno etadavoca: King Pasenadi said to them, King Pasenadi of Kosala said to them:
āÄyÄma, mÄrisÄ, yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etamatthaį¹ paį¹ipucchissÄma. āCome, good fellows, letās go to the Buddha and ask him about this. āCome, dear sirs, let us approach the Blessed One and question him about this matter.
YathÄ no bhagavÄ byÄkarissati tathÄ naį¹ dhÄressÄmÄāti. As he answers, so weāll remember it.ā As the Blessed One answers us, so we should remember it. ā
āEvaį¹, mÄrisÄāti kho te rÄjÄno raƱƱo pasenadissa kosalassa paccassosuį¹. āYes, dear sir,ā replied those kings. āAll right, dear sir, ā those kings replied.
Atha kho te paƱca rÄjÄno pasenadipamukhÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then those five kings headed by Pasenadi went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. King Pasenadi reported their conversation to the Buddha, and said, Then those five kings, headed by King Pasenadi, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat down to one side. King Pasenadi then reported their entire discussion to the Blessed One, asking:
āidha, bhante, amhÄkaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ rÄjÅ«naį¹ paƱcahi kÄmaguį¹ehi samappitÄnaį¹ samaį¹
gÄ«bhÅ«tÄnaį¹ paricÄrayamÄnÄnaį¹ ayamantarÄkathÄ udapÄdi:
ākiį¹ nu kho kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti? āWhat now, venerable sir, is the chief of sensual pleasures?ā

ārÅ«pÄ kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti.

Kiį¹ nu kho, bhante, kÄmÄnaį¹ agganāti? āSir, whatās the best of sensual pleasures?ā
āManÄpapariyantaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, mahÄrÄja, paƱcasu kÄmaguį¹esu agganti vadÄmi. āGreat king, which kind of sensual stimulation is best is defined by which is most agreeable, I say. āGreat king, I say that what is chief among the five cords of sensual pleasure is determined by whatever is most agreeable.
Teva, mahÄrÄja, rÅ«pÄ ekaccassa manÄpÄ honti, teva rÅ«pÄ ekaccassa amanÄpÄ honti. The very same sights that are agreeable to some are disagreeable to others. Those same forms that are agreeable to one person, great king, are disagreeable to another.
Yehi ca yo rÅ«pehi attamano hoti paripuį¹į¹asaį¹
kappo, so tehi rÅ«pehi aƱƱaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ uttaritaraį¹ vÄ paį¹Ä«tataraį¹ vÄ na pattheti. When youāre happy with certain sights, as youāve got all you wished for, you donāt want any other sight thatās better or finer. When one is pleased and completely satisfied with certain forms, then one does not yearn for any other form higher or more sublime than those forms.
Te tassa rÅ«pÄ paramÄ honti. For you, those sights are perfect For him those forms are then supreme;
Te tassa rÅ«pÄ anuttarÄ honti. and supreme. for him those forms are unsurpassed.

When youāre happy with certain touches, as youāve got all you wished for, you donāt want any other touch thatās better or finer. When one is pleased and completely satisfied with certain tactile objects, then one does not yearn for any other tactile object higher or more sublime than those tactile objects. For him those tactile objects are then supreme; for him those tactile objects are unsurpassed.

galika was sitting in that assembly. Now on that occasion the lay follower CandananĢgalika was sitting in that assembly.

galiko upÄsako uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ ekaį¹saį¹ uttarÄsaį¹
gaį¹ karitvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹ÄmetvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then he got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said, Then the lay follower CandananĢgalika rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, raising his joined hands in reverential salutation towards the Blessed One, said to him:
āpaį¹ibhÄti maį¹, bhagavÄ, paį¹ibhÄti maį¹, sugatÄāti. āI feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!ā āAn inspiration has come to me, Blessed One! An inspiration has come to me, Fortunate One!ā
āPaį¹ibhÄtu taį¹, candanaį¹
galikÄāti bhagavÄ avoca. āThen speak as you feel inspired,ā said the Buddha. āThen express your inspiration, CandananĢgalika, ā, the Blessed One said.

galiko upÄsako bhagavato sammukhÄ tadanurÅ«pÄya gÄthÄya abhitthavi: Then the lay follower Candanaį¹
galika extolled the Buddha in his presence with an appropriate verse: Then the lay follower CandananĢgalika, in the presence of the Blessed One, extolled him with an appropriate verse:
āPadumaį¹ yathÄ kokanadaį¹ sugandhaį¹, āLike a fragrant pink lotus āAs the fragrant red lotus Kokanada
PÄto siyÄ phullamavÄ«tagandhaį¹; that blooms in the morning, its fragrance unfadedāBlooms in the morning, its fragrance unspent,

Atha kho te paƱca rÄjÄno candanaį¹
galikaį¹ upÄsakaį¹ paƱcahi uttarÄsaį¹
gehi acchÄdesuį¹. Then those five kings clothed Candanaį¹
galika with five upper robes. Then those five kings bestowed five upper robes upon the lay follower CandananĢgalika.
Atha kho candanaį¹
galiko upÄsako tehi paƱcahi uttarÄsaį¹
gehi bhagavantaį¹ acchÄdesÄ«ti. And Candanaį¹
galika in turn endowed the Buddha with those robes. But the lay follower CandananĢgalika bestowed those five upper robes upon the Blessed One.
