Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard. Thus have I heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ uruvelÄyaį¹ viharati najjÄ neraƱjarÄya tÄ«re ajapÄlanigrodhamÅ«le paį¹hamÄbhisambuddho. At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in UruvelÄ at the root of the goatherdās banyan tree on the bank of the NeraƱjarÄ River. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at UruvelÄ on the bank of the river NeraƱjarÄ at the foot of the Goatherdās Banyan Tree just after he had become fully enlightened.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ rattandhakÄratimisÄyaį¹ abbhokÄse nisinno hoti, devo ca ekamekaį¹ phusÄyati. Now at that time the Buddha was meditating in the open during the dark of night, while a gentle rain drizzled down. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was sitting out in the open air in the thick darkness of the night while it was drizzling.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ bhagavato bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo mahantaį¹ hatthirÄjavaį¹į¹aį¹ abhinimminitvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami. Then MÄra the Wicked, wanting to make the Buddha feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, manifested in the form of a huge elephant king and approached him. Then MÄra the Evil One, wishing to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the Blessed One, manifested himself in the form of a giant king elephant and approached the Blessed One.
SeyyathÄpi nÄma mahÄariį¹į¹hako maį¹i; Its head was like a huge block of soapstone. Like a huge block of steatite;
evamassa sÄ«saį¹ hoti. so was his head.
SeyyathÄpi nÄma suddhaį¹ rÅ«piyaį¹; Its tusks were like pure silver. Like pure silver;
evamassa dantÄ honti. so were his tusks.
SeyyathÄpi nÄma mahatÄ« naį¹
galÄ«sÄ; Its trunk was like a long plough pole. Like a huge plough pole,
evamassa soį¹įøo hoti. so was his trunk.
Atha kho bhagavÄ āmÄro ayaį¹ pÄpimÄā iti viditvÄ mÄraį¹ pÄpimantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then the Buddha, knowing that this was MÄra the Wicked, addressed him in verse: Then the Blessed One, having understood, āThis is MÄra the Evil One, ā addressed him in verse:
āSaį¹saraį¹ dÄ«ghamaddhÄnaį¹, āTransmigrating for such a long time, āYouāve wandered through the long course
Vaį¹į¹aį¹ katvÄ subhÄsubhaį¹; youāve made forms beautiful and ugly. Creating beautiful and hideous shapes.
Alaį¹ te tena pÄpima, Enough of this, Wicked One! Enough, Evil One, with that trick of yours:
Nihato tvamasi antakÄāti. Youāre beaten, terminator!ā Youāre defeated, End-maker!ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ bhagavÄ, jÄnÄti maį¹ sugatoāti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing, āThe Blessed One knows me, the Fortunate One knows me, ā sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
