Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā uruvelāyaį¹ viharati najjā neraƱjarāya tÄ«re ajapālanigrodhamÅ«le paį¹hamābhisambuddho. At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in Uruvelā at the root of the goatherdā€™s banyan tree on the bank of the NeraƱjarā River. While dwelling at Uruvelā. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was sitting out in the open air in the thick darkness of the night while it was drizzling.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā rattandhakāratimisāyaį¹ abbhokāse nisinno hoti, devo ca ekamekaį¹ phusāyati. Now at that time the Buddha was meditating in the open during the dark of night, while a gentle rain drizzled down.

Atha kho māro pāpimā, bhagavato bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppādetukāmo, yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavato avidÅ«re uccāvacā vaį¹‡į¹‡anibhā upadaį¹seti, subhā ceva asubhā ca. Then Māra the Wicked, wanting to make the Buddha feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, approached him, and while not far away generated a rainbow of bright colors, both beautiful and ugly. Then Māra the Evil One, wishing to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the Blessed One, approached the Blessed One and, not far from him, displayed diverse lustrous shapes, both beautiful and hideous.

Atha kho bhagavā ā€œmāro ayaį¹ pāpimāā€ iti viditvā māraį¹ pāpimantaį¹ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi: Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse: Then the Blessed One, having understood, ā€œThis is Māra the Evil One, ā€ addressed him in verses:

ā€œSaį¹saraį¹ dÄ«ghamaddhānaį¹, ā€œTransmigrating for such a long time, ā€œYouā€™ve wandered on through the long course

vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ katvā subhāsubhaį¹; youā€™ve made forms beautiful and ugly. Creating beautiful and hideous shapes.

Alaį¹ te tena pāpima, Enough of this, Wicked One! Enough, Evil One, with that trick of yours:

nihato tvamasi antaka. Youā€™re beaten, terminator. Youā€™re defeated, End-maker!

Ye ca kāyena vācāya, Those who are well restrained ā€œIn body, speech,

manasā ca susaį¹vutā; in body, speech, and mind and mind, those who are well restrained

Na te māravasānugā, donā€™t fall under Māraā€™s sway, Do not come under Māraā€™s control

na te mārassa baddhagÅ«ā€ti. nor are they your lackies.ā€ Nor become Māraā€™s henchmen. ā€

Atha kho māro ā€¦peā€¦ tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra ā€¦ vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One ā€¦ disappeared right there.
