Paį¹hamamÄrapÄsasutta MÄraās Snares (1st) MÄraās Snare
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard. Thus have I heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ bÄrÄį¹asiyaį¹ viharati isipatane migadÄye. At one time the Buddha was staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at BÄrÄį¹asÄ« in the Deer Park at Isipatana.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā āBhikkhus!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied. āVenerable sir!ā those bhikkhus replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:
āMayhaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikÄrÄ yoniso sammappadhÄnÄ anuttarÄ vimutti anuppattÄ, anuttarÄ vimutti sacchikatÄ. āMendicants, I have attained and realized supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort. āBhikkhus, by careful attention, by careful right striving, I have arrived at unsurpassed liberation, I have realized unsurpassed liberation.
Tumhepi, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikÄrÄ yoniso sammappadhÄnÄ anuttaraį¹ vimuttiį¹ anupÄpuį¹Ätha, anuttaraį¹ vimuttiį¹ sacchikarothÄāti. You too should attain and realize supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort.ā You too, bhikkhus, by careful attention, by careful right striving, must arrive at unsurpassed liberation, must realize unsurpassed liberation. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Then MÄra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
āBaddhosi mÄrapÄsena, āYouāre bound by MÄraās snares, āYou are bound by MÄraās snare
ye dibbÄ ye ca mÄnusÄ; both human and heavenly. Both celestial and human;
MÄrabandhanabaddhosi, Youāre bound by MÄraās bonds: You are bound by MÄraās bondage:
na me samaį¹a mokkhasÄ«āti. you wonāt escape me, ascetic!ā You wonāt escape me, ascetic!ā
āMuttÄhaį¹ mÄrapÄsena, āIām freed from MÄraās snares, āI am freed from MÄraās snare
Ye dibbÄ ye ca mÄnusÄ; both human and heavenly. Both celestial and human;
MÄrabandhanamuttomhi, Iām freed from MÄraās bonds. I am freed from MÄraās bondage:
Nihato tvamasi antakÄāti. Youāre beaten, terminator!ā Youāre defeated, End-maker!ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ā¦peā¦ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra ā¦ vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One ā¦ disappeared right there.
