DutiyamÄrapÄsasutta MÄraās Snares (2nd) MÄraās Snare
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ bÄrÄį¹asiyaį¹ viharati isipatane migadÄye. At one time the Buddha was staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at BÄrÄį¹asÄ« in the Deer Park at Isipatana.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā āBhikkhus!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied. āVenerable sir!ā those bhikkhus replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:
āMuttÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, sabbapÄsehi ye dibbÄ ye ca mÄnusÄ. āMendicants, I am freed from all snares, both human and heavenly. āBhikkhus, I am freed from all snares, both celestial and human.
Tumhepi, bhikkhave, muttÄ sabbapÄsehi ye dibbÄ ye ca mÄnusÄ. You are also freed from all snares, both human and heavenly. You too, bhikkhus, are freed from all snares, both celestial and human.
Caratha, bhikkhave, cÄrikaį¹ bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. Wander forth, mendicants, for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Wander forth, O bhikkhus, for the welfare of the multitude, for the happiness of the multitude, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans.
MÄ ekena dve agamittha. Let not two go by one road. Let not two go the same way.
Desetha, bhikkhave, dhammaį¹ ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄsetha. Teach the Dhamma thatās good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And reveal a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. Teach, O bhikkhus, the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with the right meaning and phrasing. Reveal the perfectly complete and purified holy life.
Santi sattÄ apparajakkhajÄtikÄ, assavanatÄ dhammassa parihÄyanti. There are beings with little dust in their eyes. Theyāre in decline because they havenāt heard the teaching. There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are falling away because they do not hear the Dhamma.
Bhavissanti dhammassa aƱƱÄtÄro. There will be those who understand the teaching! There will be those who will understand the Dhamma.
Ahampi, bhikkhave, yena uruvelÄ senÄnigamo tenupasaį¹
kamissÄmi dhammadesanÄyÄāti. I will travel to UruvelÄ, the village of SenÄni, in order to teach the Dhamma.ā I too, bhikkhus, will go to SenÄnigama in UruvelÄ in order to teach the Dhamma. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Then MÄra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
āBaddhosi sabbapÄsehi, āYouāre bound by all snares, āYou are bound by all the snares
ye dibbÄ ye ca mÄnusÄ; both human and heavenly. Both celestial and human;
MahÄbandhanabaddhosi, Youāre bound by the great bond: You are bound by the great bondage:
na me samaį¹a mokkhasÄ«āti. you wonāt escape me, ascetic!ā You wonāt escape me, ascetic!ā
āMuttÄhaį¹ sabbapÄsehi, āIām freed from all snares, ] āI am freed from all the snares
Ye dibbÄ ye ca mÄnusÄ; both human and heavenly. Both celestial and human;
MahÄbandhanamuttomhi, Iām freed from the great bonds; I am freed from the great bondage:
Nihato tvamasi antakÄāti. Youāre beaten, terminator!ā Youāre defeated, End-maker!ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ā¦peā¦ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra ā¦ vanished right there.
