DutiyaÄyusutta Lifespan (2nd) Life Span
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ ā¦peā¦ etadavoca: There the Buddha ā¦ said:
āAppamidaį¹, bhikkhave, manussÄnaį¹ Äyu. āMendicants, the lifespan of humans is short.
GamanÄ«yo samparÄyo, kattabbaį¹ kusalaį¹, caritabbaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹. You must go to the next life. So you should do what is skillful, you should practice the spiritual life.
Natthi jÄtassa amaraį¹aį¹. No-one born is immortal.
Yo, bhikkhave, ciraį¹ jÄ«vati, so vassasataį¹ appaį¹ vÄ bhiyyoāti. A long life is a hundred years or a little more.ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Then MÄra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
āNÄccayanti ahorattÄ, āThe days and nights donāt rush by, āThe days and nights do not fly by,
JÄ«vitaį¹ nÅ«parujjhati; and life isnāt cut short. Life does not come to a stop.
Äyu anupariyÄyati maccÄnaį¹, The life of mortals keeps rolling on, The life span of mortals rolls along
NemÄ«va rathakubbaranāti. like a chariotās rim around the hub.ā Like the chariotās felly round the hub. ā
āAccayanti ahorattÄ, āThe days and nights rush by, āThe days and nights go flying by,
jÄ«vitaį¹ uparujjhati; and then life is cut short. Life comes to a stop.
Äyu khÄ«yati maccÄnaį¹, The life of mortals wastes away, The life span of mortals is depleted
kunnadÄ«naį¹va odakanāti. like the water in tiny streams.ā Like the water in rivulets. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ bhagavÄ, jÄnÄti maį¹ sugatoāti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One ā¦ disappeared right there.
