Patirūpasutta Appropriate Suitable

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosalesu viharati ekasālāyaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡agāme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans near the brahmin village of Ekasālā. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kosalans at the brahmin village of Ekasālā.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. Now, at that time the Buddha was teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.

Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: Then Māra thought, Then it occurred to Māra the Evil One:

ā€œayaį¹ kho samaį¹‡o gotamo mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. ā€œThe ascetic Gotama is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. ā€œThis ascetic Gotama is teaching the Dhamma while surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.

YannÅ«nāhaį¹ yena samaį¹‡o gotamo tenupasaį¹…kameyyaį¹ vicakkhukammāyāā€ti. Why donā€™t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?ā€ Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:

ā€œNetaį¹ tava patirÅ«paį¹, ā€œItā€™s not appropriate for you ā€œThis is not suitable for you,

yadaƱƱamanusāsasi; to instruct others. That you instruct others.

Anurodhavirodhesu, As you engage in this, In attraction and repulsion,

mā sajjittho tadācaranā€ti. donā€™t get caught up in favoring and opposing.ā€ When so engaged donā€™t get caught.ā€

ā€œHitānukampÄ« sambuddho, ā€œThe Buddha instructs others ā€œCompassionate for their welfare, The Buddha

yadaƱƱamanusāsati; out of compassion for their welfare. instructs others.

Anurodhavirodhehi, The Realized One is liberated From attraction and repulsion.

vippamutto tathāgatoā€ti. from favoring and opposing.ā€ The Tathāgata is fully released ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maį¹ bhagavā, jānāti maį¹ sugatoā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One ā€¦ disappeared right there.
