Patirūpasutta Appropriate Suitable
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosalesu viharati ekasÄlÄyaį¹ brÄhmaį¹agÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans near the brahmin village of EkasÄlÄ. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kosalans at the brahmin village of EkasÄlÄ.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ mahatiyÄ gihiparisÄya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. Now, at that time the Buddha was teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.
Atha kho mÄrassa pÄpimato etadahosi: Then MÄra thought, Then it occurred to MÄra the Evil One:
āayaį¹ kho samaį¹o gotamo mahatiyÄ gihiparisÄya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. āThe ascetic Gotama is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. āThis ascetic Gotama is teaching the Dhamma while surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.
YannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena samaį¹o gotamo tenupasaį¹
kameyyaį¹ vicakkhukammÄyÄāti. Why donāt I go and pull the wool over their eyes?ā Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Then MÄra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
āNetaį¹ tava patirÅ«paį¹, āItās not appropriate for you āThis is not suitable for you,
yadaƱƱamanusÄsasi; to instruct others. That you instruct others.
Anurodhavirodhesu, As you engage in this, In attraction and repulsion,
mÄ sajjittho tadÄcaranāti. donāt get caught up in favoring and opposing.ā When so engaged donāt get caught.ā
āHitÄnukampÄ« sambuddho, āThe Buddha instructs others āCompassionate for their welfare, The Buddha
yadaƱƱamanusÄsati; out of compassion for their welfare. instructs others.
Anurodhavirodhehi, The Realized One is liberated From attraction and repulsion.
vippamutto tathÄgatoāti. from favoring and opposing.ā The TathÄgata is fully released ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ bhagavÄ, jÄnÄti maį¹ sugatoāti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One ā¦ disappeared right there.
