Kassakasutta A Farmer The Farmer
SÄvatthinidÄnaį¹. At SÄvatthÄ«. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ nibbÄnapaį¹isaį¹yuttÄya dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti. Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk concerning NibbÄna.
Te ca bhikkhÅ« aį¹į¹hiį¹ katvÄ manasi katvÄ sabbacetasÄ samannÄharitvÄ ohitasotÄ dhammaį¹ suį¹anti. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. And those bhikkhus were listening to the Dhamma with eager ears, attending to it as a matter of vital concern, applying their whole minds to it.
Atha kho mÄrassa pÄpimato etadahosi: Then MÄra thought, Then it occurred to MÄra the Evil One:
āayaį¹ kho samaį¹o gotamo bhikkhÅ«naį¹ nibbÄnapaį¹isaį¹yuttÄya dhammiyÄ kathÄya ā¦peā¦ āThe ascetic Gotama is giving a Dhamma talk about extinguishment ā¦ and the mendicants are listening well. āThis ascetic Gotama is instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus ā¦
yannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena samaį¹o gotamo tenupasaį¹
kameyyaį¹ vicakkhukammÄyÄāti. Why donāt I go and pull the wool over their eyes?ā Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ kassakavaį¹į¹aį¹ abhinimminitvÄ mahantaį¹ naį¹
galaį¹ khandhe karitvÄ dÄ«ghapÄcanayaį¹į¹hiį¹ gahetvÄ haį¹ahaį¹akeso sÄį¹asÄį¹inivattho kaddamamakkhitehi pÄdehi yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then MÄra the Wicked manifested in the form of a farmer carrying a large plough on his shoulder. He held a long goad, his hair was messy, he was clad in sunn hemp, and his feet were muddy. He went up to the Buddha and said to him, Then MÄra the Evil One manifested himself in the form of a farmer, carrying a large plough on his shoulder, holding a long goad stick, his hair dishevelled , wearing hempen garments, his feet smeared with mud.
āapi, samaį¹a, balÄ«badde addasÄāti? āSo, ascetic, did you happen to see any oxen?ā āMaybe youāve seen oxen, ascetic?ā
āKiį¹ pana, pÄpima, te balÄ«baddehÄ«āti? āBut what have you to do with oxen, Wicked One?ā āWhat are oxen to you, Evil One?ā
āMameva, samaį¹a, cakkhu, mama rÅ«pÄ, mama cakkhusamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. āMine alone, ascetic, is the eye, mine are sights, mine is the field of eye contact consciousness. āThe eye is mine, ascetic, forms are mine, eye-contact and its base of consciousness are mine.
Kuhiį¹ me, samaį¹a, gantvÄ mokkhasi? Where can you escape me, ascetic? Where can you go, ascetic, to escape from me?
Mameva, samaį¹a, sotaį¹, mama saddÄ ā¦peā¦ Mine alone is the ear ā¦ The ear is mine, ascetic, sounds are mine ā¦
mameva, samaį¹a, ghÄnaį¹, mama gandhÄ; nose ā¦ The nose is mine, ascetic, odours are mine ā¦
mameva, samaį¹a, jivhÄ, mama rasÄ; tongue ā¦ The tongue is mine, ascetic, tastes are mine ā¦

Kuhiį¹ me, samaį¹a, gantvÄ mokkhasÄ«āti? Where can you escape me, ascetic?ā Where can you go, ascetic, to escape from me?ā
āTaveva, pÄpima, cakkhu, tava rÅ«pÄ, tava cakkhusamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. āYours alone, Wicked One, is the eye, yours are sights, yours is the field of eye contact consciousness. āThe eye is yours, Evil One, forms are yours, eye-contact and its base of consciousness are yours;
Yattha ca kho, pÄpima, natthi cakkhu, natthi rÅ«pÄ, natthi cakkhusamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹, agati tava tattha, pÄpima. Where there is no eye, no sights, no eye contact consciousnessāyou have no place there, Wicked One! but, Evil One, where there is no eye, no forms, no eye-contact and its base of consciousnessāthere is no place for you there, Evil One.
Taveva, pÄpima, sotaį¹, tava saddÄ, tava sotasamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. Yours alone is the ear ā¦ The ear is yours, Evil One, sounds are yours, ear-contact and its base of consciousness are yours;
Yattha ca kho, pÄpima, natthi sotaį¹, natthi saddÄ, natthi sotasamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹, agati tava tattha, pÄpima. but, Evil One, where there is no ear, no sounds, no ear-contact and its base of consciousnessāthere is no place for you there, Evil One.
Taveva, pÄpima, ghÄnaį¹, tava gandhÄ, tava ghÄnasamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. nose ā¦ The nose is yours, Evil One, odours are yours, nose-contact and its base of consciousness are yours;
Yattha ca kho, pÄpima, natthi ghÄnaį¹, natthi gandhÄ, natthi ghÄnasamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹, agati tava tattha, pÄpima. but, Evil One, where there is no nose, no odours, no nose-contact and its base of consciousnessāthere is no place for you there, Evil One.
Taveva, pÄpima, jivhÄ, tava rasÄ, tava jivhÄsamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹ ā¦peā¦ tongue ā¦ The tongue is yours, Evil One, tastes are yours, tongue-contact and its base of consciousness are yours;
taveva, pÄpima, kÄyo, tava phoį¹į¹habbÄ, tava kÄyasamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹ ā¦peā¦ body ā¦ The body is yours, Evil One, tactile objects are yours, body-contact and its base of consciousness are yours;
taveva, pÄpima, mano, tava dhammÄ, tava manosamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. mind, yours are ideas, yours is the field of mind contact consciousness. The mind is yours, Evil One, mental phenomena are yours, mind-contact and its base of consciousness are yours;
Yattha ca kho, pÄpima, natthi mano, natthi dhammÄ, natthi manosamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹, agati tava tattha, pÄpimÄāti. Where there is no mind, no ideas, no mind contact consciousnessāyou have no place there, Wicked One!ā but, Evil One, where there is no mind, no mental phenomena, no mind-contact and its base of consciousnessāthere is no place for you there, Evil One.
āYaį¹ vadanti mama yidanti, āThe things they call āmineā, [MÄra: ] āThat of which they say āItās mine, ā
ye vadanti mamanti ca; and those who say āitās mineā: And those who speak in terms of āmineāā
Ettha ce te mano atthi, if your mind remains there, If your mind exists among these,
na me samaį¹a mokkhasÄ«āti. you wonāt escape me, ascetic!ā You wonāt escape me, ascetic. ā
āYaį¹ vadanti na taį¹ mayhaį¹, āThe things they speak of arenāt mine; [The Blessed One: ] āThat which they speak of is not mine,
ye vadanti na te ahaį¹; Iām not someone who speaks like that. Iām not one of those who speak [of mine].
Evaį¹ pÄpima jÄnÄhi, So know this, Wicked One: You should know thus, O Evil One:
na me maggampi dakkhasÄ«āti. you wonāt even see the path I take.ā Even my path you will not see. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ā¦peā¦ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra ā¦ vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One ā¦ disappeared right there.
