Samiddhisutta With Samiddhi Samiddhi
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati silÄvatiyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans near SilÄvatÄ«. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Sakyans at SilÄvatÄ« .
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ samiddhi bhagavato avidÅ«re appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharati. Now at that time Venerable Samiddhi was meditating not far from the Buddha, diligent, keen, and resolute. Now on that occasion the Venerable Samiddhi was dwelling not far from the Blessed Oneādiligent, ardent, and resolute.
Atha kho Äyasmato samiddhissa rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi: Then as Venerable Samiddhi was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, Then, while the Venerable Samiddhi was alone in seclusion, a reflection arose in his mind thus:
ālÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, āIām so fortunate, so very fortunate, āIt is indeed a gain for me, it is well gained by me,
yassa me satthÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho. to have a teacher who is a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha! that my teacher is the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One!
LÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, Iām so fortunate, so very fortunate, It is indeed a gain for me, it is well gained by me,
yvÄhaį¹ evaį¹ svÄkkhÄte dhammavinaye pabbajito. to have gone forth in a teaching and training so well explained! that I have gone forth in this well-expounded Dhamma and Discipline!
LÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, Iām so fortunate, so very fortunate, It is indeed a gain for me, it is well gained by me,
yassa me sabrahmacÄrino sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄāti. to have spiritual companions who are ethical and of good character.ā that my companions in the holy life are virtuous, of good character!ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ Äyasmato samiddhissa cetasÄ cetoparivitakkamaƱƱÄya yenÄyasmÄ samiddhi tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ Äyasmato samiddhissa avidÅ«re mahantaį¹ bhayabheravaį¹ saddamakÄsi, apissudaį¹ pathavÄ« maƱƱe undrÄ«yati. And then MÄra the Wicked, knowing Samiddhiās train of thought, went up to him and made a terrifyingly loud noise close by him. It seemed as if the earth was shattering. Then MÄra the Evil One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the mind of the Venerable Samiddhi, approached him and, not far from him, made a loud noise, frightful and terrifying, as though the earth were splitting open.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ samiddhi yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno ÄyasmÄ samiddhi bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Samiddhi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. The Buddha said, Then the Venerable Samiddhi approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and reported what had happened.
āidhÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavato avidÅ«re appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharÄmi.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi:
ālÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me,
yassa me satthÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho.
LÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me,
yvÄhaį¹ evaį¹ svÄkkhÄte dhammavinaye pabbajito.
LÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me,
yassa me sabrahmacÄrino sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄāti.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhante, avidÅ«re mahÄbhayabheravasaddo ahosi, apissudaį¹ pathavÄ« maƱƱe undrÄ«yatÄ«āti.
āNesÄ, samiddhi, pathavÄ« undrÄ«yati. āSamiddhi, thatās not the earth shattering. ] āThat was not the earth splitting open, Samiddhi.
MÄro eso pÄpimÄ tuyhaį¹ vicakkhukammÄya Ägato. Thatās MÄra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes! That was MÄra the Evil One, who had come in order to confound you.
Gaccha tvaį¹, samiddhi, tattheva appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharÄhÄ«āti. Go back to that same place, Samiddhi, and meditate, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā Go back, Samiddhi, and dwell diligent, ardent, and resolute. ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho ÄyasmÄ samiddhi bhagavato paį¹issutvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ pakkÄmi. āYes, sir,ā replied Samiddhi. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving. āYes, venerable sir, ā the Venerable Samiddhi replied. Then he rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, and departed, keeping him on the right.
Dutiyampi kho ÄyasmÄ samiddhi tattheva appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto vihÄsi. And for a second time Samiddhi was meditating in that same place, diligent, ardent, and resolute. A second time, while the Venerable Samiddhi was alone in seclusion,
Dutiyampi kho Äyasmato samiddhissa rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa ā¦peā¦ And for a second time he had the same thought ā¦ a reflection arose in his mind ā¦
dutiyampi kho mÄro pÄpimÄ Äyasmato samiddhissa cetasÄ cetoparivitakkamaƱƱÄya ā¦peā¦ and MÄra made an earth-shattering noise. And a second time MÄra the Evil One ā¦
apissudaį¹ pathavÄ« maƱƱe undrÄ«yati. made a loud noise, frightful and terrifying, as though the earth were splitting open.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ samiddhi mÄraį¹ pÄpimantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then Samiddhi addressed MÄra the Wicked One in verse: Then the Venerable Samiddhi, having understood, āThis is MÄra the Evil One, ā addressed him in verse:
āSaddhÄyÄhaį¹ pabbajito, āI went forth out of faith āI have gone forth out of faith
agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹; from the lay life to homelessness. From the home to the homeless life.
Sati paĆ±Ć±Ä ca me buddhÄ, My mindfulness and wisdom are mature, My mindfulness and wisdom are mature,
cittaƱca susamÄhitaį¹; my mind is serene in immersion. And my mind well concentrated.
KÄmaį¹ karassu rÅ«pÄni, Make whatever illusions you want, Conjure up whatever forms you wish,
neva maį¹ byÄdhayissasÄ«āti. it wonāt bother me.ā But you will never make me tremble. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ samiddhi bhikkhÅ«āti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe mendicant Samiddhi knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing, āThe bhikkhu Samiddhi knows me, ā sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
