Atha kho vijayÄ bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ ā¦peā¦ Then the nun VijayÄ robed up in the morning ā¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« VijayÄ dressed ā¦
aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divÄvihÄraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayās meditation. ā¦ she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayās abiding.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ vijayÄya bhikkhuniyÄ bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo samÄdhimhÄ cÄvetukÄmo yena vijayÄ bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ vijayaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MÄra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun VijayÄ feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make her fall away from immersion, went up to her and addressed her in verse: Then MÄra the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhunÄ« VijayÄ, desiring to make her fall away from concentration, approached her and addressed her in verse:
āDaharÄ tvaį¹ rÅ«pavatÄ«, āYouāre so young and beautiful, āYou are so young and beautiful,
ahaƱca daharo susu; and Iām a youth in my prime. And I too am a youth in my prime.

gikena turiyena, Come, my lady, let us enjoy With the music of a fivefold ensemble,
ehayyebhiramÄmaseāti. the music of a five-piece band.ā Come, noble lady, let us rejoice ā
Atha kho vijayÄya bhikkhuniyÄ etadahosi: Then the nun VijayÄ thought, Then it occurred to the bhikkhunÄ« VijayÄ:
āko nu khvÄyaį¹ manusso vÄ amanusso vÄ gÄthaį¹ bhÄsatÄ«āti? āWhoās speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?ā āNow who is thisā¦ ?
Atha kho vijayÄya bhikkhuniyÄ etadahosi: Then she thought,
āmÄro kho ayaį¹ pÄpimÄ mama bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo samÄdhimhÄ cÄvetukÄmo gÄthaį¹ bhÄsatÄ«āti. āThis is MÄra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make me fall away from immersion!ā This is MÄra the Evil One ā¦ desiring to make me fall away from concentration. ā
Atha kho vijayÄ bhikkhunÄ« āmÄro ayaį¹ pÄpimÄā iti viditvÄ mÄraį¹ pÄpimantaį¹ gÄthÄhi paccabhÄsi: Then VijayÄ, knowing that this was MÄra the Wicked, replied to him in verse: Then the bhikkhunÄ« VijayÄ, having understood, āThis is MÄra the Evil One, ā replied to him in verses:
āRÅ«pÄ saddÄ rasÄ gandhÄ, āSights, sounds, tastes, smells, āForms, sounds, tastes, odours,
phoį¹į¹habbÄ ca manoramÄ; and touches so delightful. And delightful tactile objectsā
NiyyÄtayÄmi tuyheva, I hand them right back to you, MÄra, I offer them right back to you,
mÄra nÄhaį¹ tenatthikÄ. for I have no use for them. For I, O MÄra, do not need them.
IminÄ pÅ«tikÄyena, This body is foul, By this foul, putrid body,
bhindanena pabhaį¹
gunÄ; decaying and frail. Subject to break up, fragile:
Aį¹į¹Ä«yÄmi harÄyÄmi, Iām horrified and repelled by it, āI am repelled and humiliated
kÄmataį¹hÄ samÅ«hatÄ. and Iāve eradicated sensual craving. Iāve uprooted sensual craving.
Ye ca rÅ«pÅ«pagÄ sattÄ, There are beings in the realm of luminous form, āAs to those beings who fare amidst form,
ye ca arÅ«paį¹į¹hÄyino; and others stuck in the formless. And those who abide in the formless,
YÄ ca santÄ samÄpatti, and also those peaceful attainments: And those peaceful attainments too:
sabbattha vihato tamoāti. Iāve destroyed the darkness regarding all of them.ā Everywhere darkness has been destroyed. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ vijayÄ bhikkhunÄ«āti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe nun VijayÄ knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing āThe bhikkhunÄ« VijayÄ knows me, ā sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
