Atha kho vijayā bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹‡hasamayaį¹ nivāsetvā ā€¦peā€¦ Then the nun Vijayā robed up in the morning ā€¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« Vijayā dressed ā€¦

aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divāvihāraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayā€™s meditation. ā€¦ she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayā€™s abiding.

Atha kho māro pāpimā vijayāya bhikkhuniyā bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppādetukāmo samādhimhā cāvetukāmo yena vijayā bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā vijayaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Māra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun Vijayā feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make her fall away from immersion, went up to her and addressed her in verse: Then Māra the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhunÄ« Vijayā, desiring to make her fall away from concentration, approached her and addressed her in verse:

ā€œDaharā tvaį¹ rÅ«pavatÄ«, ā€œYouā€™re so young and beautiful, ā€œYou are so young and beautiful,

ahaƱca daharo susu; and Iā€™m a youth in my prime. And I too am a youth in my prime.

PaƱcaį¹…gikena turiyena, Come, my lady, let us enjoy With the music of a fivefold ensemble,

ehayyebhiramāmaseā€ti. the music of a five-piece band.ā€ Come, noble lady, let us rejoice ā€

Atha kho vijayāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi: Then the nun Vijayā thought, Then it occurred to the bhikkhunī Vijayā:

ā€œko nu khvāyaį¹ manusso vā amanusso vā gāthaį¹ bhāsatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWhoā€™s speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?ā€ ā€œNow who is thisā€¦ ?

Atha kho vijayāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi: Then she thought,

ā€œmāro kho ayaį¹ pāpimā mama bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppādetukāmo samādhimhā cāvetukāmo gāthaį¹ bhāsatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThis is Māra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make me fall away from immersion!ā€ This is Māra the Evil One ā€¦ desiring to make me fall away from concentration. ā€

Atha kho vijayā bhikkhunÄ« ā€œmāro ayaį¹ pāpimāā€ iti viditvā māraį¹ pāpimantaį¹ gāthāhi paccabhāsi: Then Vijayā, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse: Then the bhikkhunÄ« Vijayā, having understood, ā€œThis is Māra the Evil One, ā€ replied to him in verses:

ā€œRÅ«pā saddā rasā gandhā, ā€œSights, sounds, tastes, smells, ā€œForms, sounds, tastes, odours,

phoį¹­į¹­habbā ca manoramā; and touches so delightful. And delightful tactile objectsā€”

Niyyātayāmi tuyheva, I hand them right back to you, Māra, I offer them right back to you,

māra nāhaį¹ tenatthikā. for I have no use for them. For I, O Māra, do not need them.

Iminā pūtikāyena, This body is foul, By this foul, putrid body,

bhindanena pabhaį¹…gunā; decaying and frail. Subject to break up, fragile:

Aį¹­į¹­Ä«yāmi harāyāmi, Iā€™m horrified and repelled by it, ā€œI am repelled and humiliated

kāmataį¹‡hā samÅ«hatā. and Iā€™ve eradicated sensual craving. Iā€™ve uprooted sensual craving.

Ye ca rÅ«pÅ«pagā sattā, There are beings in the realm of luminous form, ā€œAs to those beings who fare amidst form,

ye ca arÅ«paį¹­į¹­hāyino; and others stuck in the formless. And those who abide in the formless,

Yā ca santā samāpatti, and also those peaceful attainments: And those peaceful attainments too:

sabbattha vihato tamoā€ti. Iā€™ve destroyed the darkness regarding all of them.ā€ Everywhere darkness has been destroyed. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maį¹ vijayā bhikkhunÄ«ā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe nun Vijayā knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One, realizing ā€œThe bhikkhunÄ« Vijayā knows me, ā€ sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
