Atha kho cālā bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹‡hasamayaį¹ nivāsetvā ā€¦peā€¦ Then the nun Cālā robed up in the morning ā€¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« Cālā dressed ā€¦

aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divāvihāraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayā€™s meditation. she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayā€™s abiding.

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena cālā bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā cālaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ etadavoca: Then Māra the Wicked went up to Cālā and said to her, Then Māra the Evil One approached the bhikkhunÄ« Cālā and said to her:

ā€œkiį¹ nu tvaį¹, bhikkhuni, na rocesÄ«ā€ti? ā€œNun, what donā€™t you approve of?ā€ ā€œWhat donā€™t you approve of, bhikkhunÄ«?ā€

ā€œJātiį¹ khvāhaį¹, āvuso, na rocemÄ«ā€ti. ā€œI donā€™t approve of rebirth, sir.ā€ ā€œI donā€™t approve of birth, friend. ā€

ā€œKiį¹ nu jātiį¹ na rocesi, ā€œWhy donā€™t you approve of rebirth? ā€œWhy donā€™t you approve of birth?

jāto kāmāni bhuƱjati; When youā€™re born, you get to enjoy sensual pleasures. Once born, one enjoys sensual pleasures.

Ko nu taį¹ idamādapayi, Who put this idea in your head: Who now has persuaded you of this:

jātiį¹ mā roca bhikkhunÄ«ā€ti. ā€˜Nun, donā€™t approve of rebirthā€™?ā€ ā€˜BhikkhunÄ«, donā€™t approve of birthā€™?ā€

ā€œJātassa maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, ā€œDeath comes to those who are born, ā€œFor one who is born there is death;

jāto dukkhāni phussati; when youā€™re born you undergo sufferingsā€”Once born, one encounters sufferingsā€”

Bandhaį¹ vadhaį¹ pariklesaį¹, killing, caging, miseryā€”Bondage, murder, afflictionā€”

tasmā jātiį¹ na rocaye. thatā€™s why you shouldnā€™t approve of rebirth. Hence one shouldnā€™t approve of birth.

Buddho dhammamadesesi, The Buddha taught me the Dhamma ā€œThe Buddha has taught the Dhamma,

jātiyā samatikkamaį¹; for passing beyond rebirth, The transcendence of birth;

Sabbadukkhappahānāya, for giving up all suffering; For the abandoning of all suffering

so maį¹ sacce nivesayi. he settled me in the truth. He has settled me in the truth.

Ye ca rÅ«pÅ«pagā sattā, There are beings in the realm of luminous form, ā€œAs to those beings who fare amidst form,

ye ca arÅ«paį¹­į¹­hāyino; and others stuck in the formless. And those who abide in the formlessā€”

Nirodhaį¹ appajānantā, Not understanding cessation, Not having understood cessation,

āgantāro punabbhavanā€ti. they return in future lives.ā€ They come again to renewed existence. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maį¹ cālā bhikkhunÄ«ā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe nun Cālā knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, ā€œThe bhikkhunÄ« Cālā knows me, ā€ sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
