Atha kho cÄlÄ bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ ā¦peā¦ Then the nun CÄlÄ robed up in the morning ā¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« CÄlÄ dressed ā¦
aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divÄvihÄraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayās meditation. she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayās abiding.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena cÄlÄ bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ cÄlaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ etadavoca: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to CÄlÄ and said to her, Then MÄra the Evil One approached the bhikkhunÄ« CÄlÄ and said to her:
ākiį¹ nu tvaį¹, bhikkhuni, na rocesÄ«āti? āNun, what donāt you approve of?ā āWhat donāt you approve of, bhikkhunÄ«?ā
āJÄtiį¹ khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, na rocemÄ«āti. āI donāt approve of rebirth, sir.ā āI donāt approve of birth, friend. ā
āKiį¹ nu jÄtiį¹ na rocesi, āWhy donāt you approve of rebirth? āWhy donāt you approve of birth?
jÄto kÄmÄni bhuƱjati; When youāre born, you get to enjoy sensual pleasures. Once born, one enjoys sensual pleasures.
Ko nu taį¹ idamÄdapayi, Who put this idea in your head: Who now has persuaded you of this:
jÄtiį¹ mÄ roca bhikkhunÄ«āti. āNun, donāt approve of rebirthā?ā āBhikkhunÄ«, donāt approve of birthā?ā
āJÄtassa maraį¹aį¹ hoti, āDeath comes to those who are born, āFor one who is born there is death;
jÄto dukkhÄni phussati; when youāre born you undergo sufferingsāOnce born, one encounters sufferingsā
Bandhaį¹ vadhaį¹ pariklesaį¹, killing, caging, miseryāBondage, murder, afflictionā
tasmÄ jÄtiį¹ na rocaye. thatās why you shouldnāt approve of rebirth. Hence one shouldnāt approve of birth.
Buddho dhammamadesesi, The Buddha taught me the Dhamma āThe Buddha has taught the Dhamma,
jÄtiyÄ samatikkamaį¹; for passing beyond rebirth, The transcendence of birth;
SabbadukkhappahÄnÄya, for giving up all suffering; For the abandoning of all suffering
so maį¹ sacce nivesayi. he settled me in the truth. He has settled me in the truth.
Ye ca rÅ«pÅ«pagÄ sattÄ, There are beings in the realm of luminous form, āAs to those beings who fare amidst form,
ye ca arÅ«paį¹į¹hÄyino; and others stuck in the formless. And those who abide in the formlessā
Nirodhaį¹ appajÄnantÄ, Not understanding cessation, Not having understood cessation,
ÄgantÄro punabbhavanāti. they return in future lives.ā They come again to renewed existence. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ cÄlÄ bhikkhunÄ«āti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe nun CÄlÄ knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing, āThe bhikkhunÄ« CÄlÄ knows me, ā sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
