Atha kho upacÄlÄ bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ ā¦peā¦ Then the nun UpacÄlÄ robed up in the morning ā¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« UpacÄlÄ dressed ā¦
aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divÄvihÄraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayās meditation. she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayās abiding.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena upacÄlÄ bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ upacÄlaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ etadavoca: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to UpacÄlÄ and said to her, Then MÄra the Evil One approached the bhikkhunÄ« UpacÄlÄ and said to her:
ākattha nu tvaį¹, bhikkhuni, uppajjitukÄmÄāti? āNun, where do you want to be reborn?ā āWhere do you wish to be reborn, bhikkhunÄ«?ā
āNa khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, katthaci uppajjitukÄmÄāti. āI donāt want to be reborn anywhere, sir.ā āI do not wish to be reborn anywhere, friend. ā
āTÄvatiį¹sÄ ca yÄmÄ ca, āThere are the gods of the thirty-three, and those of Yama; āThere are TÄvatiį¹sa and YÄma devas,
tusitÄ cÄpi devatÄ; also the Joyful Deities, And devatÄs of the Tusita realm,
NimmÄnaratino devÄ, the gods who love to imagine, Devas who take delight in creating,
ye devÄ vasavattino; and the gods who control that imagined by others. And devas who exercise control.
Tattha cittaį¹ paį¹idhehi, Set your heart on such places, Direct your mind there [to those realms]
ratiį¹ paccanubhossasÄ«āti. and youāll undergo delight.ā And youāll experience delight. ā
āTÄvatiį¹sÄ ca yÄmÄ ca, āThe gods of the thirty-three, and those of Yama; āThere are TÄvatiį¹sa and YÄma devas,
tusitÄ cÄpi devatÄ; also the Joyful Deities, And devatÄs of the Tusita realm,
NimmÄnaratino devÄ, the gods who love to imagine, Devas who take delight in creating,
ye devÄ vasavattino; and the gods who control that imagined by othersāAnd devas who exercise control.
KÄmabandhanabaddhÄ te, theyāre bound with the bonds of sensuality; They are still bound by sensual bondage,
enti mÄravasaį¹ puna. they fall under your sway again. They come again under MÄraās control.
Sabbo ÄdÄ«pito loko, All the world is on fire, āAll the world is on fire,
sabbo loko padhūpito; all the world is smoldering, All the world is burning,
Sabbo pajjÄlito loko, all the world is ablaze, All the world is ablaze,
sabbo loko pakampito. all the world is rocking. All the world is quaking.
Akampitaį¹ apajjalitaį¹, My mind adores that place āThat which does not quake or blaze,
aputhujjanasevitaį¹; where MÄra cannot go; That to which worldlings do not resort,
Agati yattha mÄrassa, itās not shaking or burning, Where there is no place for MÄra:
tattha me nirato manoāti. and not frequented by ordinary people.ā That is where my mind delights. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ upacÄlÄ bhikkhunÄ«āti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe nun UpacÄlÄ knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing, āThe bhikkhunÄ« UpacÄlÄ knows me, sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
