Atha kho upacālā bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹‡hasamayaį¹ nivāsetvā ā€¦peā€¦ Then the nun Upacālā robed up in the morning ā€¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« Upacālā dressed ā€¦

aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divāvihāraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayā€™s meditation. she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayā€™s abiding.

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena upacālā bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā upacālaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ etadavoca: Then Māra the Wicked went up to Upacālā and said to her, Then Māra the Evil One approached the bhikkhunÄ« Upacālā and said to her:

ā€œkattha nu tvaį¹, bhikkhuni, uppajjitukāmāā€ti? ā€œNun, where do you want to be reborn?ā€ ā€œWhere do you wish to be reborn, bhikkhunÄ«?ā€

ā€œNa khvāhaį¹, āvuso, katthaci uppajjitukāmāā€ti. ā€œI donā€™t want to be reborn anywhere, sir.ā€ ā€œI do not wish to be reborn anywhere, friend. ā€

ā€œTāvatiį¹sā ca yāmā ca, ā€œThere are the gods of the thirty-three, and those of Yama; ā€œThere are Tāvatiį¹ƒsa and Yāma devas,

tusitā cāpi devatā; also the Joyful Deities, And devatās of the Tusita realm,

Nimmānaratino devā, the gods who love to imagine, Devas who take delight in creating,

ye devā vasavattino; and the gods who control that imagined by others. And devas who exercise control.

Tattha cittaį¹ paį¹‡idhehi, Set your heart on such places, Direct your mind there [to those realms]

ratiį¹ paccanubhossasÄ«ā€ti. and youā€™ll undergo delight.ā€ And youā€™ll experience delight. ā€

ā€œTāvatiį¹sā ca yāmā ca, ā€œThe gods of the thirty-three, and those of Yama; ā€œThere are Tāvatiį¹ƒsa and Yāma devas,

tusitā cāpi devatā; also the Joyful Deities, And devatās of the Tusita realm,

Nimmānaratino devā, the gods who love to imagine, Devas who take delight in creating,

ye devā vasavattino; and the gods who control that imagined by othersā€”And devas who exercise control.

Kāmabandhanabaddhā te, theyā€™re bound with the bonds of sensuality; They are still bound by sensual bondage,

enti māravasaį¹ puna. they fall under your sway again. They come again under Māraā€™s control.

Sabbo ādÄ«pito loko, All the world is on fire, ā€œAll the world is on fire,

sabbo loko padhūpito; all the world is smoldering, All the world is burning,

Sabbo pajjālito loko, all the world is ablaze, All the world is ablaze,

sabbo loko pakampito. all the world is rocking. All the world is quaking.

Akampitaį¹ apajjalitaį¹, My mind adores that place ā€œThat which does not quake or blaze,

aputhujjanasevitaį¹; where Māra cannot go; That to which worldlings do not resort,

Agati yattha mārassa, itā€™s not shaking or burning, Where there is no place for Māra:

tattha me nirato manoā€ti. and not frequented by ordinary people.ā€ That is where my mind delights. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maį¹ upacālā bhikkhunÄ«ā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe nun Upacālā knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, ā€œThe bhikkhunÄ« Upacālā knows me, sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
