Atha kho selā bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹‡hasamayaį¹ nivāsetvā ā€¦peā€¦ Then the nun Selā robed up in the morning ā€¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« Selā dressed ā€¦

aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divāvihāraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayā€™s meditation. she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayā€™s abiding.

Atha kho māro pāpimā selāya bhikkhuniyā bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppādetukāmo ā€¦peā€¦ Then Māra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun Selā feel fear, terror, and goosebumps ā€¦ Then Māra the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhunÄ« Selā, desiring to make her fall away from concentration, approached her and addressed her in verse:

selaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: addressed her in verse:

ā€œKenidaį¹ pakataį¹ bimbaį¹, ā€œWho created this puppet? By whom has this puppet been created?

kvanu bimbassa kārako; Where is its maker? Where is the maker of the puppet?

Kvanu bimbaį¹ samuppannaį¹, Where has the puppet arisen? Where has the puppet arisen?

kvanu bimbaį¹ nirujjhatÄ«ā€ti. And where does it cease?ā€ Where does the puppet cease?ā€

Atha kho selāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi: Then the nun Selā thought, Then it occurred to the bhikkhunī Selā:

ā€œko nu khvāyaį¹ manusso vā amanusso vā gāthaį¹ bhāsatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWhoā€™s speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?ā€ ā€œNow who is thisā€¦ ?

Atha kho selāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi: Then she thought,

ā€œmāro kho ayaį¹ pāpimā mama bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppādetukāmo samādhimhā cāvetukāmo gāthaį¹ bhāsatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThis is Māra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make me fall away from immersion!ā€ This is Māra the Evil One ā€¦ desiring to make me fall away from concentration. ā€

Atha kho selā bhikkhunÄ« ā€œmāro ayaį¹ pāpimāā€ iti viditvā māraį¹ pāpimantaį¹ gāthāhi paccabhāsi: Then Selā, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse: Then the bhikkhunÄ« Selā, having understood, ā€œThis is Māra the Evil One, ā€ replied to him in verses:

ā€œNayidaį¹ attakataį¹ bimbaį¹, ā€œThis puppet isnā€™t self-made, ā€œThis puppet is not made by itself,

nayidaį¹ parakataį¹ aghaį¹; nor is this misery made by another. Nor is this misery made by another.

Hetuį¹ paį¹­icca sambhÅ«taį¹, It comes to be because of a cause, It has come to be dependent on a cause;

hetubhaį¹…gā nirujjhati. and ceases when the cause breaks up. With the causeā€™s breakup it will cease.

Yathā aƱƱataraį¹ bÄ«jaį¹, Itā€™s like a seed thatā€™s sown ā€œAs when a seed is sown in a field

khette vuttaį¹ virÅ«hati; in a field; it grows It grows depending on a pair of factors:

PathavÄ«rasaƱcāgamma, relying on both the soilā€™s nutrients It requires both the soilā€™s nutrients

sinehaƱca tadÅ«bhayaį¹. as well as moisture. And a steady supply of moisture:

Evaį¹ khandhā ca dhātuyo, In the same way the aggregates and elements ā€œJust so the aggregates and elements,

cha ca āyatanā ime; and these six sense fields And these six bases of sensory contact,

Hetuį¹ paį¹­icca sambhÅ«tā, come to be because of a cause, Have come to be dependent on a cause;

hetubhaį¹…gā nirujjhareā€ti. and cease when the cause breaks up.ā€ With the causeā€™s breakup they will cease. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maį¹ selā bhikkhunÄ«ā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe nun Selā knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, ā€œThe bhikkhunÄ« Selā knows me, ā€ sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
