Atha kho selÄ bhikkhunÄ« pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ ā¦peā¦ Then the nun SelÄ robed up in the morning ā¦ Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« SelÄ dressed ā¦
aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le divÄvihÄraį¹ nisÄ«di. and sat at the root of a tree for the dayās meditation. she sat down at the foot of a tree for the dayās abiding.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ selÄya bhikkhuniyÄ bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo ā¦peā¦ Then MÄra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun SelÄ feel fear, terror, and goosebumps ā¦ Then MÄra the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhunÄ« SelÄ, desiring to make her fall away from concentration, approached her and addressed her in verse:

āKenidaį¹ pakataį¹ bimbaį¹, āWho created this puppet? By whom has this puppet been created?
kvanu bimbassa kÄrako; Where is its maker? Where is the maker of the puppet?
Kvanu bimbaį¹ samuppannaį¹, Where has the puppet arisen? Where has the puppet arisen?
kvanu bimbaį¹ nirujjhatÄ«āti. And where does it cease?ā Where does the puppet cease?ā
Atha kho selÄya bhikkhuniyÄ etadahosi: Then the nun SelÄ thought, Then it occurred to the bhikkhunÄ« SelÄ:
āko nu khvÄyaį¹ manusso vÄ amanusso vÄ gÄthaį¹ bhÄsatÄ«āti? āWhoās speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?ā āNow who is thisā¦ ?
Atha kho selÄya bhikkhuniyÄ etadahosi: Then she thought,
āmÄro kho ayaį¹ pÄpimÄ mama bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo samÄdhimhÄ cÄvetukÄmo gÄthaį¹ bhÄsatÄ«āti. āThis is MÄra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make me fall away from immersion!ā This is MÄra the Evil One ā¦ desiring to make me fall away from concentration. ā
Atha kho selÄ bhikkhunÄ« āmÄro ayaį¹ pÄpimÄā iti viditvÄ mÄraį¹ pÄpimantaį¹ gÄthÄhi paccabhÄsi: Then SelÄ, knowing that this was MÄra the Wicked, replied to him in verse: Then the bhikkhunÄ« SelÄ, having understood, āThis is MÄra the Evil One, ā replied to him in verses:
āNayidaį¹ attakataį¹ bimbaį¹, āThis puppet isnāt self-made, āThis puppet is not made by itself,
nayidaį¹ parakataį¹ aghaį¹; nor is this misery made by another. Nor is this misery made by another.
Hetuį¹ paį¹icca sambhÅ«taį¹, It comes to be because of a cause, It has come to be dependent on a cause;
hetubhaį¹
gÄ nirujjhati. and ceases when the cause breaks up. With the causeās breakup it will cease.
YathÄ aƱƱataraį¹ bÄ«jaį¹, Itās like a seed thatās sown āAs when a seed is sown in a field
khette vuttaį¹ virÅ«hati; in a field; it grows It grows depending on a pair of factors:
PathavÄ«rasaƱcÄgamma, relying on both the soilās nutrients It requires both the soilās nutrients
sinehaƱca tadÅ«bhayaį¹. as well as moisture. And a steady supply of moisture:
Evaį¹ khandhÄ ca dhÄtuyo, In the same way the aggregates and elements āJust so the aggregates and elements,
cha ca ÄyatanÄ ime; and these six sense fields And these six bases of sensory contact,
Hetuį¹ paį¹icca sambhÅ«tÄ, come to be because of a cause, Have come to be dependent on a cause;
hetubhaį¹
gÄ nirujjhareāti. and cease when the cause breaks up.ā With the causeās breakup they will cease. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ selÄ bhikkhunÄ«āti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe nun SelÄ knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing, āThe bhikkhunÄ« SelÄ knows me, ā sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
