AƱƱatarabrahmasutta A Certain Divinity A Certain Brahmā (Another View)

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At SāvatthÄ«.

Tena kho pana samayena aƱƱatarassa brahmuno evarÅ«paį¹ pāpakaį¹ diį¹į¹higataį¹ uppannaį¹ hoti: Now at that time a certain divinity had the following harmful misconception: Now on that occasion the following evil speculative view had arisen in a certain brahmā:

ā€œnatthi so samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā yo idha āgaccheyyāā€ti. ā€œNo ascetic or brahmin can come here!ā€ ā€œThere is no ascetic or brahmin who can come here. ā€

Atha kho bhagavā tassa brahmuno cetasā cetoparivitakkamaƱƱāyaā€”seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso ā€¦peā€¦ tasmiį¹ brahmaloke pāturahosi. Then the Buddha knew what that divinity was thinking. As easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from Jetaā€™s Grove and reappeared in that realm of divinity. Then, having known with his own mind the reflection in that brahmāā€™s mind, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Blessed One disappeared from Jetaā€™s Grove and reappeared in that brahmā world.

Atha kho bhagavā tassa brahmuno upari vehāsaį¹ pallaį¹…kena nisÄ«di tejodhātuį¹ samāpajjitvā. Then the Buddha sat cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. The Blessed One sat cross-legged in the air above that brahmā, having entered into meditation on the fire element.

Atha kho āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa etadahosi: Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna thought, Then it occurred to the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna:

ā€œkahaį¹ nu kho bhagavā etarahi viharatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWhere is the Buddha staying at present?ā€ ā€œWhere now is the Blessed One dwelling at present?ā€

Addasā kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavantaį¹ dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena tassa brahmuno upari vehāsaį¹ pallaį¹…kena nisinnaį¹ tejodhātuį¹ samāpannaį¹. With clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, he saw the Buddha seated cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. With the divine eye, which is purified and surpasses the human, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna saw the Blessed One sitting cross-legged in the air above that brahmā, having entered into meditation on the fire element.

Disvānaā€”seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ pasāreyya, pasāritaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaā€”jetavane antarahito tasmiį¹ brahmaloke pāturahosi. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from Jetaā€™s Grove and reappeared in that realm of divinity. Having seen this, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna disappeared from Jetaā€™s Grove and reappeared in that brahmā world.

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno puratthimaį¹ disaį¹ nissāya tassa brahmuno upari vehāsaį¹ pallaį¹…kena nisÄ«di tejodhātuį¹ samāpajjitvā nÄ«cataraį¹ bhagavato. Then Mahāmoggallānaā€”positioning himself in the east, below the Buddhaā€”sat cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna stationed himself in the eastern quarter and sat cross-legged in the air above that brahmāā€”though lower than the Blessed Oneā€”having entered into meditation on the fire element.

Atha kho āyasmato mahākassapassa etadahosi: Then Venerable Mahākassapa ā€¦ Then it occurred to the Venerable Mahākassapa:

Atha kho āyasmato mahākappinassa etadahosi: Venerable Mahākappina ā€¦ Then it occurred to the Venerable Mahākappina:

ā€œkahaį¹ nu kho bhagavā etarahi viharatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWhere now is the Blessed One dwelling at present?ā€

Addasā kho āyasmā mahākappino bhagavantaį¹ dibbena cakkhunā ā€¦peā€¦ tejodhātuį¹ samāpannaį¹. With the divine eye ā€¦ the Venerable Mahākappina saw the Blessed One sitting cross-legged in the air above that brahmāā€¦ .

Atha kho āyasmato anuruddhassa etadahosi: Venerable Anuruddha ā€¦ Then it occurred to the Venerable Anuruddha:

Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho uttaraį¹ disaį¹ nissāya tassa brahmuno upari vehāsaį¹ pallaį¹…kena nisÄ«di tejodhātuį¹ samāpajjitvā nÄ«cataraį¹ bhagavato. positioned himself in the north, below the Buddha, sitting cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. Then the Venerable Anuruddha stationed himself in the northern quarter and sat cross-legged in the air above that brahmāā€”though lower than the Blessed Oneā€”having entered into meditation on the fire element.

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taį¹ brahmānaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Mahāmoggallāna addressed that Divinity in verse: Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna addressed that brahmā in verse:

ā€œAjjāpi te āvuso sā diį¹į¹hi, ā€œGood sir, do you still have the same view ā€œToday, friend, do you still hold that view,

Yā te diį¹į¹hi pure ahu; that you had in the past? The view that you formerly held?

Passasi vÄ«tivattantaį¹, Or do you see the radiance Do you see the radiance

Brahmaloke pabhassaranā€ti. transcending the realm of divinity?ā€ Surpassing that in the brahmā world?ā€

ā€œNa me mārisa sā diį¹į¹hi, ā€œGood fellow, I donā€™t have that view ā€œI no longer hold that view, dear sir,

yā me diį¹į¹hi pure ahu; that I had in the past. The view that I formerly held.

Passāmi vÄ«tivattantaį¹, I see the radiance Indeed I see the radiance

brahmaloke pabhassaraį¹; transcending the realm of divinity. Surpassing that in the brahmā world.

Svāhaį¹ ajja kathaį¹ vajjaį¹, So how could I say today Today how could I maintain,

ahaį¹ niccomhi sassatoā€ti. that I am permanent and eternal?ā€ ā€˜I am permanent and eternalā€™?ā€

Atha kho bhagavā taį¹ brahmānaį¹ saį¹vejetvāā€”seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ pasāreyya, pasāritaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaā€”tasmiį¹ brahmaloke antarahito jetavane pāturahosi. Having inspired a sense of awe in the Divinity, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, the Buddha vanished from the realm of divinity and reappeared in Jetaā€™s Grove. Then, having stirred up a sense of urgency in that brahmā, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Blessed One disappeared from that brahmā world and reappeared in Jetaā€™s Grove.

Atha kho so brahmā aƱƱataraį¹ brahmapārisajjaį¹ āmantesi: Then that Divinity addressed a member of his retinue, Then that brahmā addressed one member of his assembly thus:

ā€œehi tvaį¹, mārisa, yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaį¹…kama; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ evaį¹ vadehi: ā€œPlease, good fellow, go up to Venerable Mahāmoggallāna and say to him: ā€œCome now, dear sir, approach the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna and say to him:

He went to Moggallāna and asked as instructed. ā€œYes, dear sir, ā€ that member of Brahmāā€™s assembly replied. Then he approached the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna and asked him:

ā€œatthi nu kho, mārisa moggallāna, aƱƱepi tassa bhagavato sāvakā evaį¹mahiddhikā evaį¹mahānubhāvā; ā€œSir Moggallāna, are there any other disciples of the Blessed One that are as powerful and mighty

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taį¹ brahmapārisajjaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Mahāmoggallāna addressed that member of the retinue of Divinity in verse: Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna addressed that member of Brahmāā€™s assembly in verse:

ā€œTevijjā iddhipattā ca, ā€œThere are many disciples of the Buddha Triple-knowledge bearers with spiritual powers,

cetopariyāyakovidā; who have the three knowledges, Skilled in the course of othersā€™ minds.

KhÄ«į¹‡Äsavā arahanto, and have attained psychic power, expert in reading minds, Who are arahants with taints destroyed,

bahÅ« buddhassa sāvakāā€ti. theyā€™re perfected ones with defilements ended.ā€ ā€œMany are the disciples of the Buddha ā€

Atha kho so brahmapārisajjo āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvā yena so brahmā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā taį¹ brahmānaį¹ etadavoca: Then that member of the retinue of Divinity, having approved and agreed with what Mahāmoggallāna said, went to that Divinity and said to him, Then that member of Brahmāā€™s assembly, having delighted and rejoiced in the Venerable Mahāmoggallānaā€™s statement, approached that brahmā and told him:

ā€œÄyasmā, mārisa, mahāmoggallāno evamāha: ā€œGood fellow, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said this: ā€œDear sir, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna speaks thus:

ā€˜Tevijjā iddhipattā ca, ā€˜There are many disciples of the Buddha Triple-knowledge bearers with spiritual powers,

cetopariyāyakovidā; who have the three knowledges, Skilled in the course of othersā€™ minds.

bahÅ« buddhassa sāvakāā€™ā€ti. theyā€™re perfected ones with defilements ended.ā€™ā€ ā€œā€˜Many are the disciples of the Buddha.ā€™ā€

Idamavoca so brahmapārisajjo. Thatā€™s what that member of the retinue of Divinity said. This is what that member of Brahmāā€™s assembly said.

Attamano ca so brahmā tassa brahmapārisajjassa bhāsitaį¹ abhinandÄ«ti. Satisfied, that Divinity approved what the member of his retinue said. Elated, that brahmā delighted in his statement.
