Tena kho pana samayena aƱƱatarassa brahmuno evarÅ«paį¹ pÄpakaį¹ diį¹į¹higataį¹ uppannaį¹ hoti: Now at that time a certain divinity had the following harmful misconception: Now on that occasion the following evil speculative view had arisen in a certain brahmÄ:
ānatthi so samaį¹o vÄ brÄhmaį¹o vÄ yo idha ÄgaccheyyÄāti. āNo ascetic or brahmin can come here!ā āThere is no ascetic or brahmin who can come here. ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ tassa brahmuno cetasÄ cetoparivitakkamaƱƱÄyaāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso ā¦peā¦ tasmiį¹ brahmaloke pÄturahosi. Then the Buddha knew what that divinity was thinking. As easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from Jetaās Grove and reappeared in that realm of divinity. Then, having known with his own mind the reflection in that brahmÄās mind, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Blessed One disappeared from Jetaās Grove and reappeared in that brahmÄ world.

kena nisÄ«di tejodhÄtuį¹ samÄpajjitvÄ. Then the Buddha sat cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. The Blessed One sat cross-legged in the air above that brahmÄ, having entered into meditation on the fire element.
Atha kho Äyasmato mahÄmoggallÄnassa etadahosi: Then Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna thought, Then it occurred to the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna:
ākahaį¹ nu kho bhagavÄ etarahi viharatÄ«āti? āWhere is the Buddha staying at present?ā āWhere now is the Blessed One dwelling at present?ā
AddasÄ kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno bhagavantaį¹ dibbena cakkhunÄ visuddhena atikkantamÄnusakena tassa brahmuno upari vehÄsaį¹ pallaį¹
kena nisinnaį¹ tejodhÄtuį¹ samÄpannaį¹. With clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, he saw the Buddha seated cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. With the divine eye, which is purified and surpasses the human, the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna saw the Blessed One sitting cross-legged in the air above that brahmÄ, having entered into meditation on the fire element.
DisvÄnaāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaājetavane antarahito tasmiį¹ brahmaloke pÄturahosi. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from Jetaās Grove and reappeared in that realm of divinity. Having seen this, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna disappeared from Jetaās Grove and reappeared in that brahmÄ world.

Then MahÄmoggallÄnaāpositioning himself in the east, below the Buddhaāsat cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. Then the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna stationed himself in the eastern quarter and sat cross-legged in the air above that brahmÄāthough lower than the Blessed Oneāhaving entered into meditation on the fire element.

ākahaį¹ nu kho bhagavÄ etarahi viharatÄ«āti? āWhere now is the Blessed One dwelling at present?ā

kena nisÄ«di tejodhÄtuį¹ samÄpajjitvÄ nÄ«cataraį¹ bhagavato. positioned himself in the north, below the Buddha, sitting cross-legged in the air above that Divinity, having entered upon the fire element. Then the Venerable Anuruddha stationed himself in the northern quarter and sat cross-legged in the air above that brahmÄāthough lower than the Blessed Oneāhaving entered into meditation on the fire element.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno taį¹ brahmÄnaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MahÄmoggallÄna addressed that Divinity in verse: Then the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna addressed that brahmÄ in verse:
āAjjÄpi te Ävuso sÄ diį¹į¹hi, āGood sir, do you still have the same view āToday, friend, do you still hold that view,
YÄ te diį¹į¹hi pure ahu; that you had in the past? The view that you formerly held?
Passasi vÄ«tivattantaį¹, Or do you see the radiance Do you see the radiance
Brahmaloke pabhassaranāti. transcending the realm of divinity?ā Surpassing that in the brahmÄ world?ā
āNa me mÄrisa sÄ diį¹į¹hi, āGood fellow, I donāt have that view āI no longer hold that view, dear sir,
yÄ me diį¹į¹hi pure ahu; that I had in the past. The view that I formerly held.
PassÄmi vÄ«tivattantaį¹, I see the radiance Indeed I see the radiance
brahmaloke pabhassaraį¹; transcending the realm of divinity. Surpassing that in the brahmÄ world.
SvÄhaį¹ ajja kathaį¹ vajjaį¹, So how could I say today Today how could I maintain,
ahaį¹ niccomhi sassatoāti. that I am permanent and eternal?ā āI am permanent and eternalā?ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ taį¹ brahmÄnaį¹ saį¹vejetvÄāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaātasmiį¹ brahmaloke antarahito jetavane pÄturahosi. Having inspired a sense of awe in the Divinity, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, the Buddha vanished from the realm of divinity and reappeared in Jetaās Grove. Then, having stirred up a sense of urgency in that brahmÄ, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, the Blessed One disappeared from that brahmÄ world and reappeared in Jetaās Grove.
Atha kho so brahmÄ aƱƱataraį¹ brahmapÄrisajjaį¹ Ämantesi: Then that Divinity addressed a member of his retinue, Then that brahmÄ addressed one member of his assembly thus:
āehi tvaį¹, mÄrisa, yenÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno tenupasaį¹
kama; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ evaį¹ vadehi: āPlease, good fellow, go up to Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna and say to him: āCome now, dear sir, approach the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna and say to him:
āatthi nu kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, aƱƱepi tassa bhagavato sÄvakÄ evaį¹mahiddhikÄ evaį¹mahÄnubhÄvÄ; āMoggallÄna my good fellow, are there any other disciples of the Buddha who have power and might āSir MoggallÄna, are there any other disciples of the Blessed One that are as powerful and mighty ā
seyyathÄpi bhavaį¹ moggallÄno kassapo kappino anuruddhoāāti? comparable to the worthies MoggallÄna, Kassapa, Kappina, and Anuruddha?āā as Masters MoggallÄna, Kassapa, Kappina , and Anuruddha?ā
āEvaį¹, mÄrisÄāti kho so brahmapÄrisajjo tassa brahmuno paį¹issutvÄ yenÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ etadavoca: āYes, good fellow,ā replied that retinue member. He went to MoggallÄna and asked as instructed. āYes, dear sir, ā that member of BrahmÄās assembly replied. Then he approached the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna and asked him:
āatthi nu kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, aƱƱepi tassa bhagavato sÄvakÄ evaį¹mahiddhikÄ evaį¹mahÄnubhÄvÄ; āSir MoggallÄna, are there any other disciples of the Blessed One that are as powerful and mighty
seyyathÄpi bhavaį¹ moggallÄno kassapo kappino anuruddhoāti? as Masters MoggallÄna, Kassapa, Kappina , and Anuruddha?ā
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno taį¹ brahmapÄrisajjaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then MahÄmoggallÄna addressed that member of the retinue of Divinity in verse: Then the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna addressed that member of BrahmÄās assembly in verse:
āTevijjÄ iddhipattÄ ca, āThere are many disciples of the Buddha Triple-knowledge bearers with spiritual powers,
cetopariyÄyakovidÄ; who have the three knowledges, Skilled in the course of othersā minds.
KhÄ«į¹ÄsavÄ arahanto, and have attained psychic power, expert in reading minds, Who are arahants with taints destroyed,
bahÅ« buddhassa sÄvakÄāti. theyāre perfected ones with defilements ended.ā āMany are the disciples of the Buddha ā
Atha kho so brahmapÄrisajjo Äyasmato mahÄmoggallÄnassa bhÄsitaį¹ abhinanditvÄ anumoditvÄ yena so brahmÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ taį¹ brahmÄnaį¹ etadavoca: Then that member of the retinue of Divinity, having approved and agreed with what MahÄmoggallÄna said, went to that Divinity and said to him, Then that member of BrahmÄās assembly, having delighted and rejoiced in the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄnaās statement, approached that brahmÄ and told him:
āÄyasmÄ, mÄrisa, mahÄmoggallÄno evamÄha: āGood fellow, Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna said this: āDear sir, the Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna speaks thus:
āTevijjÄ iddhipattÄ ca, āThere are many disciples of the Buddha Triple-knowledge bearers with spiritual powers,
cetopariyÄyakovidÄ; who have the three knowledges, Skilled in the course of othersā minds.
KhÄ«į¹ÄsavÄ arahanto, and have attained psychic power, expert in reading minds,

Idamavoca so brahmapÄrisajjo. Thatās what that member of the retinue of Divinity said. This is what that member of BrahmÄās assembly said.
Attamano ca so brahmÄ tassa brahmapÄrisajjassa bhÄsitaį¹ abhinandÄ«ti. Satisfied, that Divinity approved what the member of his retinue said. Elated, that brahmÄ delighted in his statement.
