Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ divÄvihÄragato hoti paį¹isallÄ«no. Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the dayās meditation. Now on that occasion the Blessed One had gone for his dayās abiding and was in seclusion.
Atha kho subrahmÄ ca paccekabrahmÄ suddhÄvÄso ca paccekabrahmÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ paccekaį¹ dvÄrabÄhaį¹ nissÄya aį¹į¹haį¹su. Then the independent divinities SubrahmÄ and SuddhÄvÄsa went to the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. Then the independent brahmÄs SubrahmÄ and SuddhÄvÄsa approached the Blessed One and stood one at each doorpost.
Atha kho subrahmÄ paccekabrahmÄ kokÄlikaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ärabbha bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: Then SubrahmÄ recited this verse about the mendicant KokÄlika in the Buddhaās presence: Then, referring to the bhikkhu KokÄlika, the independent brahmÄ SubrahmÄ recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
āAppameyyaį¹ paminanto, āWhat wise person here would judge An immeasurable one by taking his measure?
Kodha vidvÄ vikappaye; the immeasurable by measuring them? āWhat wise man here would seek to define
Appameyyaį¹ pamÄyinaį¹, I think anyone whoād do such a thing He who would measure an immeasurable one
Nivutaį¹ taį¹ maƱƱe puthujjananāti. must be an ordinary person, shrouded in darkness.ā Must be, I think, an obstructed worldling. Źŗ
