Sanaį¹…kumārasutta With Sanaį¹…kumāra Sanaį¹…kumāra

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard. Thus have I heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati sappinÄ«tÄ«re. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the bank of the SappinÄ« river. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha on the bank of the river SappinÄ«.

Atha kho brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡o kevalakappaį¹ sappinÄ«tÄ«raį¹ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Then, late at night, the beautiful divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra, lighting up the entire SappinÄ« riverbank, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then, when the night had advanced, Brahmā Sanaį¹…kumāra, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire bank of the river SappinÄ«, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side.

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hito kho brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro bhagavato santike imaį¹ gāthaį¹ abhāsi: and recited this verse in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Standing to one side, he recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œKhattiyo seį¹­į¹­ho janetasmiį¹, ā€œThe aristocrat is best among people ā€œThe khattiya is the best among people

ye gottapaį¹­isārino; who take clan as the standard. For those whose standard is the clan,

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct

so seį¹­į¹­ho devamānuseā€ti. is best among gods and humans.ā€ Is best among devas and humans. ā€

Idamavoca brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro. Thatā€™s what the divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra said, This is what Brahmā Sanaį¹…kumāra said.

SamanuƱƱo satthā ahosi. and the teacher approved. The Teacher approved.

Atha kho brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro ā€œsamanuƱƱo me satthāā€ti bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then the divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there. Then Brahmā Sanaį¹…kumāra, thinking, ā€œThe Teacher has approved of me, ā€ paid homage to the Blessed One and, keeping him on his right, he disappeared right there.
