Bilaį¹…gikasutta With Bhāradvāja the Bitter Bilaį¹…gika

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivāpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā€™ feeding ground. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary.

Assosi kho bilaį¹…gikabhāradvājo brāhmaį¹‡o: The brahmin Bhāradvāja the Bitter heard a rumor that The brahmin Bilaį¹…gika Bhāradvāja heard:

ā€œbhāradvājagotto kira brāhmaį¹‡o samaį¹‡assa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajitoā€ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tuį¹‡hÄ«bhÅ«to ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. a brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and stood silently to one side. ā€œIt is said that the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the ascetic Gotama. ā€ Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and silently stood to one side.

Atha kho bhagavā bilaį¹…gikassa bhāradvājassa brāhmaį¹‡assa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaƱƱāya bilaį¹…gikaį¹ bhāradvājaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then the Buddha, knowing Bhāradvāja the Bitterā€™s train of thought, addressed him in verse: Then the Blessed One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the brahmin Bilaį¹…gika Bhāradvājaā€™s mind, addressed him in verse:

ā€œYo appaduį¹­į¹­hassa narassa dussati, ā€œWhoever wrongs a man who has done no wrong, ā€œIf one wrongs an innocent man,

Suddhassa posassa anaį¹…gaį¹‡assa; a pure man who has not a blemish, A pure person without blemish,

Tameva bālaį¹ pacceti pāpaį¹, the evil backfires on the fool, The evil falls back on the fool himself

Sukhumo rajo paį¹­ivātaį¹va khittoā€ti. like fine dust thrown upwind.ā€ Like fine dust thrown against the wind. ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, bilaį¹…gikabhāradvājo brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Bitter said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Bilaį¹…gika Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā€¦ā€ ā€¦ ā€œMagnificent, Master Gotama!ā€¦ ā€

abbhaƱƱāsi.

AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected. And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
