Atha kho ahiį¹sakabhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin BhÄradvÄja the Harmless went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then the brahmin Ahiį¹saka BhÄradvÄja, BhÄradvÄja the Harmless, approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him. When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk,
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ahiį¹sakabhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said, he sat down to one side and said to the Blessed One:
āahiį¹sakÄhaį¹, bho gotama, ahiį¹sakÄhaį¹, bho gotamÄāti. āI am Harmless, worthy Gotama, I am Harmless!ā āI am Ahiį¹saka the Harmless, Master Gotama. I am Ahiį¹saka the Harmless, Master Gotama. ā
āYathÄ nÄmaį¹ tathÄ cassa, āIf you were really like your name, [The Blessed One: ] āIf one were as oneās name implies
siyÄ kho tvaį¹ ahiį¹sako; then youād be Harmless. You would be a harmless one.
Yo ca kÄyena vÄcÄya, But a truly harmless person By body, speech,
manasÄ ca na hiį¹sati; does no harm by way of But it is one who does no harm at all or mind,
Sa ve ahiį¹sako hoti, body, speech, or mind; Who really is a harmless one
yo paraį¹ na vihiį¹satÄ«āti. they donāt harm anyone else.ā As he does not harm others. ā
Evaį¹ vutte, ahiį¹sakabhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin BhÄradvÄja the Harmless said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Ahiį¹saka BhÄradvÄja said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā¦ā ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦ ā
abbhaƱƱÄsi.
AƱƱataro ca panÄyasmÄ ahiį¹sakabhÄradvÄjo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable BhÄradvÄja the Harmless became one of the perfected. And the Venerable Ahiį¹saka BhÄradvÄja became one of the arahants.
