Jaį¹Äsutta With BhÄradvÄja of the Matted Hair Tangle

Atha kho jaį¹ÄbhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin BhÄradvÄja of the Matted Hair went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then the brahmin Jaį¹Ä BhÄradvÄja, BhÄradvÄja of the Tangle, approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side
Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jaį¹ÄbhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: and addressed the Buddha in verse: and addressed the Blessed One in verse:
āAntojaį¹Ä bahijaį¹Ä, āTangled within, tangled without: āA tangle inside, a tangle outside,
Jaį¹Äya jaį¹itÄ pajÄ; these people are tangled in tangles. This generation is entangled in a tangle.
Taį¹ taį¹ gotama pucchÄmi, I ask you this, Gotama: I ask you this, O Gotama,
Ko imaį¹ vijaį¹aye jaį¹anāti. who can untangle this tangle?ā Who can disentangle this tangle?ā
āSÄ«le patiį¹į¹hÄya naro sapaƱƱo, āA wise person grounded in ethics, [The Blessed One: ] āA man established on virtue, wise,
Cittaį¹ paƱƱaƱca bhÄvayaį¹; developing the mind and wisdom, Developing the mind and wisdom,
ÄtÄpÄ« nipako bhikkhu, a keen and alert mendicantāA bhikkhu ardent and discreet:
So imaį¹ vijaį¹aye jaį¹aį¹. they can untangle this tangle. He can disentangle this tangle.
Yesaį¹ rÄgo ca doso ca, Those in whom greed, hate, and ignorance āThose for whom lust and hatred
avijjÄ ca virÄjitÄ; have faded away; Along with ignorance have been expunged,
KhÄ«į¹ÄsavÄ arahanto, the perfected ones with defilements endedāThe arahants with taints destroyed:
tesaį¹ vijaį¹itÄ jaį¹Ä. they have untangled the tangle. For them the tangle is disentangled.
Yattha nÄmaƱca rÅ«paƱca, Where name and form āWhere name-and-form ceases,
asesaį¹ uparujjhati; cease with nothing left over; Stops without remainder,
Paį¹ighaį¹ rÅ«pasaĆ±Ć±Ä ca, as well as impingement and perception of form: And also impingement and perception of form:
etthesÄ chijjate jaį¹Äāti. itās there that the tangle is cut.ā It is here this tangle is cut. ā
Evaį¹ vutte, jaį¹ÄbhÄradvÄjo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, BhÄradvÄja of the Matted Hair said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Jaį¹Ä BhÄradvÄja said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā¦ā ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦ ā
aƱƱataro ca panÄyasmÄ bhÄradvÄjo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«āti. And Venerable BhÄradvÄja became one of the perfected. And the Venerable BhÄradvÄja became one of the arahants.
