Atha kho bhagavÄ pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ pattacÄ«varamÄdÄya yena udayassa brÄhmaį¹assa nivesanaį¹ tenupasaį¹
kami. Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the brahmin Udaya. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, approached the residence of the brahmin Udaya.
Atha kho udayo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavato pattaį¹ odanena pÅ«resi. Then Udaya filled the Buddhaās bowl with rice. Then the brahmin Udaya filled the Blessed Oneās bowl with rice.
Dutiyampi kho bhagavÄ pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ pattacÄ«varamÄdÄya yena udayassa brÄhmaį¹assa nivesanaį¹ tenupasaį¹
kami ā¦peā¦ The next day ā¦ and the day after that ā¦ Udaya filled the Buddhaās bowl with rice. A second time in the morning the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, approached the residence of the brahmin Udayaā¦
tatiyampi kho udayo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavato pattaį¹ odanena pÅ«retvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: But when he had filled the Buddhaās bowl for a third time, he said to the Buddha, A third time in the morning the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, approached the residence of the brahmin Udaya.Then a third time the brahmin Udaya filled the Blessed Oneās bowl with rice, after which he said to the Blessed One:
āpakaį¹į¹hakoyaį¹ samaį¹o gotamo punappunaį¹ ÄgacchatÄ«āti. āThis insatiable ascetic Gotama keeps coming back again and again!ā āThis pesky ascetic Gotama keeps coming again and again.ā
āPunappunaƱceva vapanti bÄ«jaį¹, āAgain and again, they sow the seed; [The Blessed One: ] āAgain and again, they sow the seed;
Punappunaį¹ vassati devarÄjÄ; again and again, the king of the heavens sends rain; Again and again, the sky-god sends down rain;
Punappunaį¹ khettaį¹ kasanti kassakÄ, again and again, farmers plough the field; Again and again, ploughmen plough the field;
Punappunaį¹ dhaƱƱamupeti raį¹į¹haį¹. again and again, grain is produced for the nation. Again and again, grain comes to the realm.
Punappunaį¹ yÄcakÄ yÄcayanti, Again and again, the beggars beg; Again and again, the mendicants beg;
Punappunaį¹ dÄnapatÄ« dadanti; again and again, the donors give. Again and again, the donors give;
Punappunaį¹ dÄnapatÄ« daditvÄ, Again and again, when the donors have given, When donors have given again and again,
Punappunaį¹ saggamupenti į¹hÄnaį¹. again and again, they take their place in heaven. Again and again they go to heaven.
Punappunaį¹ khÄ«ranikÄ duhanti, Again and again, dairy farmers milk; Again and again, the dairy folk draw milk;
Punappunaį¹ vaccho upeti mÄtaraį¹; again and again, a calf cleaves to its mother; Again and again, the calf goes to its mother;
Punappunaį¹ kilamati phandati ca, again and again, oppressing and intimidating; Again and again, one wearies and trembles;
Punappunaį¹ gabbhamupeti mando. that dullard returns to the womb again and again. Again and again, the dolt enters the womb;
Punappunaį¹ jÄyati mÄ«yati ca, Again and again, youāre reborn and die; Again and again, one is born and dies;
Punappunaį¹ sivathikaį¹ haranti; again and again, you get carried to a charnel ground. Again and again, they take one to the cemetery.
MaggaƱca laddhÄ apunabbhavÄya, But when theyāve gained the path for no further rebirth, But when one has obtained the path That leads to no more renewed existence,
Na punappunaį¹ jÄyati bhÅ«ripaƱƱoāti. one of vast wisdom is not reborn again and again.ā Having become broad in wisdom, One is not born again and again!ā
Evaį¹ vutte, udayo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Udaya said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Udaya said to the Blessed One :
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
