Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ vÄtehÄbÄdhiko hoti; Now at that time the Buddha was afflicted by winds. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was afflicted by winds
ÄyasmÄ ca upavÄį¹o bhagavato upaį¹į¹hÄko hoti. Venerable UpavÄna was his carer. and the Venerable UpavÄį¹a was his attendant.
Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ upavÄį¹aį¹ Ämantesi: Then the Buddha said to UpavÄna, Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable UpavÄį¹a thus:

gha me tvaį¹, upavÄį¹a, uį¹hodakaį¹ jÄnÄhÄ«āti. āPlease, UpavÄna, find some hot water for me.ā āCome now, UpavÄį¹a, find some hot water for me.
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho ÄyasmÄ upavÄį¹o bhagavato paį¹issutvÄ nivÄsetvÄ pattacÄ«varamÄdÄya yena devahitassa brÄhmaį¹assa nivesanaį¹ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÅ«to ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. āYes, sir,ā replied UpavÄna. He robed up, and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the brahmin Devahita, and stood silently to one side. āYes, venerable sir,ā the Venerable UpavÄį¹a replied. Then he dressed and, taking bowl and robe, went to the residence of the brahmin Devahita, where he stood silently to one side.

āTuį¹hÄ«bhÅ«to bhavaį¹ tiį¹į¹haį¹, āSilent stands the good fellow, āSilent, the worthy one stands,

ghÄį¹ipÄruto; shaven, wrapped in his outer robe. Shaven-headed, clad in a stitched robe.
Kiį¹ patthayÄno kiį¹ esaį¹, What do you want? What are you looking for? What do you want, what do you seek,
kiį¹ nu yÄcitumÄgatoāti. What have you come here to ask for?ā What have you come here to beg?ā
āArahaį¹ sugato loke, āThe perfected one, the Holy One in the world, [The Venerable UpavÄį¹a: ] āThe Arahant, the Fortunate One in the world,
vÄtehÄbÄdhiko muni; the sage is afflicted by winds. The Sage, is afflicted with winds.
Sace uį¹hodakaį¹ atthi, If thereās hot water, If there is any hot water, brahmin,
munino dehi brÄhmaį¹a. give it to the sage, brahmin. Please give it for the Sage.
PÅ«jito pÅ«janeyyÄnaį¹, I wish to bring it to the one āHe is worshipped by those worthy of worship,
sakkareyyÄna sakkato; who is esteemed by the estimable, Honoured by those worthy of honour,
Apacito apaceyyÄnaį¹, honored by the honorable, Respected by those worthy of respect:
tassa icchÄmi hÄtaveāti. venerated by the venerable.ā It is to him that I wish to take it.
Atha kho devahito brÄhmaį¹o uį¹hodakassa kÄjaį¹ purisena gÄhÄpetvÄ phÄį¹itassa ca puį¹aį¹ Äyasmato upavÄį¹assa pÄdÄsi. Then Devahita had a man fetch a carrying-pole with hot water. He also presented UpavÄna with a jar of molasses. Then the brahmin Devahita ordered a man to bring a carrying pole with hot water and presented a bag of molasses to the Venerable UpavÄį¹a.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ upavÄį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ uį¹hodakena nhÄpetvÄ uį¹hodakena phÄį¹itaį¹ ÄloletvÄ bhagavato pÄdÄsi. Then Venerable UpavÄna went up to the Buddha and bathed him with the hot water. Then he stirred molasses into hot water and presented it to the Buddha. Then the Venerable UpavÄį¹a approached the Blessed One. He had the Blessed One bathed with the hot water, and he mixed the molasses with hot water and offered it to him.
Atha kho bhagavato ÄbÄdho paį¹ippassambhi. Then the Buddhaās illness died down. Then the Blessed Oneās ailment subsided.
Atha kho devahito brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin Devahita went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then the brahmin Devahita approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him,
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, after which he sat down to one side
Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho devahito brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: and addressed the Buddha in verse: and addressed the Blessed One in verse:
āKattha dajjÄ deyyadhammaį¹, āWhere should you give an available gift? āWhere should one give a proper gift? ājust how?ā
kattha dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹; Where is a gift very fruitful? Where does a gift bear great fruit?
KathaƱhi yajamÄnassa, How does one who is donating How, for one bestowing alms,
kathaį¹ ijjhati dakkhiį¹Äāti. ensure the success of their religious donation?ā Does an offering bring success?
āPubbenivÄsaį¹ yo vedÄ«, āOne who knows their past lives, [The Blessed One: ] āOne who has known his past abodes, Who sees heaven and the plane of woe, Who has reached the destruction of birth, A sage consummate in direct knowledge: Here one should give a proper gift, Here a gift bears great fruit.
saggÄpÄyaƱca passati; sees heaven and places of loss, Who sees heaven and the plane of woe,
Atho jÄtikkhayaį¹ patto, and has attained the ending of rebirth, Who has reached the destruction of birth,
abhiƱƱÄvosito muni. is a sage of perfect insight. A sage consummate in direct knowledge:
Ettha dajjÄ deyyadhammaį¹, Here you should give an available gift; Here one should give a proper gift,
ettha dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹; whatās given here is very fruitful. Here a gift bears great fruit.
EvaƱhi yajamÄnassa, Thatās how a sponsor of sacrifices Thatās how, for one bestowing alms,
evaį¹ ijjhati dakkhiį¹Äāti. ensures the success of their religious donation.ā An, offering brings success.
Evaį¹ vutte, devahito brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Devahita said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Devahita said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
