Devahitasutta With Devahita Devahitasutta

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At SāvatthÄ«.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā vātehābādhiko hoti; Now at that time the Buddha was afflicted by winds. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was afflicted by winds

āyasmā ca upavāį¹‡o bhagavato upaį¹­į¹­hāko hoti. Venerable Upavāna was his carer. and the Venerable Upavāį¹‡a was his attendant.

Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ upavāį¹‡aį¹ āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to Upavāna, Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Upavāį¹‡a thus:

ā€œiį¹…gha me tvaį¹, upavāį¹‡a, uį¹‡hodakaį¹ jānāhÄ«ā€ti. ā€œPlease, Upavāna, find some hot water for me.ā€ ā€œCome now, Upavāį¹‡a, find some hot water for me.

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho āyasmā upavāį¹‡o bhagavato paį¹­issutvā nivāsetvā pattacÄ«varamādāya yena devahitassa brāhmaį¹‡assa nivesanaį¹ tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tuį¹‡hÄ«bhÅ«to ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ replied Upavāna. He robed up, and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the brahmin Devahita, and stood silently to one side. ā€œYes, venerable sir,ā€ the Venerable Upavāį¹‡a replied. Then he dressed and, taking bowl and robe, went to the residence of the brahmin Devahita, where he stood silently to one side.

Addasā kho devahito brāhmaį¹‡o āyasmantaį¹ upavāį¹‡aį¹ tuį¹‡hÄ«bhÅ«taį¹ ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitaį¹. Devahita saw him standing there The brahmin Devahita saw the Venerable Upavāį¹‡a standing silently to one side

Disvāna āyasmantaį¹ upavāį¹‡aį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: and addressed him in verse: and addressed him in verse:

ā€œTuį¹‡hÄ«bhÅ«to bhavaį¹ tiį¹­į¹­haį¹, ā€œSilent stands the good fellow, ā€œSilent, the worthy one stands,

muį¹‡įøo saį¹…ghāį¹­ipāruto; shaven, wrapped in his outer robe. Shaven-headed, clad in a stitched robe.

Kiį¹ patthayāno kiį¹ esaį¹, What do you want? What are you looking for? What do you want, what do you seek,

kiį¹ nu yācitumāgatoā€ti. What have you come here to ask for?ā€ What have you come here to beg?ā€

ā€œArahaį¹ sugato loke, ā€œThe perfected one, the Holy One in the world, [The Venerable Upavāį¹‡a: ] ā€œThe Arahant, the Fortunate One in the world,

vātehābādhiko muni; the sage is afflicted by winds. The Sage, is afflicted with winds.

Sace uį¹‡hodakaį¹ atthi, If thereā€™s hot water, If there is any hot water, brahmin,

munino dehi brāhmaį¹‡a. give it to the sage, brahmin. Please give it for the Sage.

PÅ«jito pÅ«janeyyānaį¹, I wish to bring it to the one ā€œHe is worshipped by those worthy of worship,

sakkareyyāna sakkato; who is esteemed by the estimable, Honoured by those worthy of honour,

Apacito apaceyyānaį¹, honored by the honorable, Respected by those worthy of respect:

tassa icchāmi hātaveā€ti. venerated by the venerable.ā€ It is to him that I wish to take it.

Atha kho devahito brāhmaį¹‡o uį¹‡hodakassa kājaį¹ purisena gāhāpetvā phāį¹‡itassa ca puį¹­aį¹ āyasmato upavāį¹‡assa pādāsi. Then Devahita had a man fetch a carrying-pole with hot water. He also presented Upavāna with a jar of molasses. Then the brahmin Devahita ordered a man to bring a carrying pole with hot water and presented a bag of molasses to the Venerable Upavāį¹‡a.

Atha kho āyasmā upavāį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ uį¹‡hodakena nhāpetvā uį¹‡hodakena phāį¹‡itaį¹ āloletvā bhagavato pādāsi. Then Venerable Upavāna went up to the Buddha and bathed him with the hot water. Then he stirred molasses into hot water and presented it to the Buddha. Then the Venerable Upavāį¹‡a approached the Blessed One. He had the Blessed One bathed with the hot water, and he mixed the molasses with hot water and offered it to him.

Atha kho bhagavato ābādho paį¹­ippassambhi. Then the Buddhaā€™s illness died down. Then the Blessed Oneā€™s ailment subsided.

Atha kho devahito brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin Devahita went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then the brahmin Devahita approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him,

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, after which he sat down to one side

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho devahito brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: and addressed the Buddha in verse: and addressed the Blessed One in verse:

ā€œKattha dajjā deyyadhammaį¹, ā€œWhere should you give an available gift? ā€œWhere should one give a proper gift? ā€”just how?ā€

kattha dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹; Where is a gift very fruitful? Where does a gift bear great fruit?

KathaƱhi yajamānassa, How does one who is donating How, for one bestowing alms,

kathaį¹ ijjhati dakkhiį¹‡Äā€ti. ensure the success of their religious donation?ā€ Does an offering bring success?

ā€œPubbenivāsaį¹ yo vedÄ«, ā€œOne who knows their past lives, [The Blessed One: ] ā€œOne who has known his past abodes, Who sees heaven and the plane of woe, Who has reached the destruction of birth, A sage consummate in direct knowledge: Here one should give a proper gift, Here a gift bears great fruit.

saggāpāyaƱca passati; sees heaven and places of loss, Who sees heaven and the plane of woe,

Atho jātikkhayaį¹ patto, and has attained the ending of rebirth, Who has reached the destruction of birth,

abhiƱƱāvosito muni. is a sage of perfect insight. A sage consummate in direct knowledge:

Ettha dajjā deyyadhammaį¹, Here you should give an available gift; Here one should give a proper gift,

ettha dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹; whatā€™s given here is very fruitful. Here a gift bears great fruit.

EvaƱhi yajamānassa, Thatā€™s how a sponsor of sacrifices Thatā€™s how, for one bestowing alms,

evaį¹ ijjhati dakkhiį¹‡Äā€ti. ensures the success of their religious donation.ā€ An, offering brings success.

Evaį¹ vutte, devahito brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Devahita said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Devahita said to the Blessed One:

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama ā€¦ ā€œMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€ Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
