Mānatthaddhasutta Stuck-Up

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At SāvatthÄ«.

Tena kho pana samayena mānatthaddho nāma brāhmaį¹‡o sāvatthiyaį¹ paį¹­ivasati. Now at that time a brahmin named Stuck-Up was residing in SāvatthÄ«. Now on that occasion a brahmin named Mānatthaddha, Stiff with Conceit, was residing at SāvatthÄ«.

So neva mātaraį¹ abhivādeti, na pitaraį¹ abhivādeti, na ācariyaį¹ abhivādeti, na jeį¹­į¹­habhātaraį¹ abhivādeti. He didnā€™t bow to his mother or father, his tutor, or his oldest brother. He did not pay homage to his mother or father, nor to his teacher or eldest brother.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā mahatiyā parisāya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. Now, at that time the Buddha was teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly.

Atha kho mānatthaddhassa brāhmaį¹‡assa etadahosi: Then Stuck-Up thought, Then it occurred to the brahmin Mānatthaddha:

ā€œayaį¹ kho samaį¹‡o gotamo mahatiyā parisāya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. ā€œThe ascetic Gotama is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly. ā€œThis ascetic Gotama is teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly.

YannÅ«nāhaį¹ yena samaį¹‡o gotamo tenupasaį¹…kameyyaį¹. Why donā€™t I approach him? Let me approach him.

Sace maį¹ samaį¹‡o gotamo ālapissati, ahampi taį¹ ālapissāmi. If he speaks to me, Iā€™ll speak to him. If the ascetic Gotama addresses me, then I will address him in turn.

No ce maį¹ samaį¹‡o gotamo ālapissati, ahampi nālapissāmÄ«ā€ti. But if he doesnā€™t speak, neither will I.ā€ But if he does not address me, neither will I address him.ā€

Atha kho mānatthaddho brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tuį¹‡hÄ«bhÅ«to ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Then the brahmin Stuck-Up went up to the Buddha, and stood silently to one side. Then the brahmin Mānatthaddha approached the Blessed One and stood silently to one side,

Atha kho bhagavā taį¹ nālapi. But the Buddha didnā€™t speak to him. but the Blessed One did not address him.

Atha kho mānatthaddho brāhmaį¹‡o: Then Stuck-Up thought, Then the brahmin Mānatthaddha, thinking,

ā€œnāyaį¹ samaį¹‡o gotamo kiƱci jānātÄ«ā€ti tatova puna nivattitukāmo ahosi. ā€œThis ascetic Gotama knows nothing!ā€ And he wanted to go back from there right away. ā€œThis ascetic Gotama doesnā€™t know anything,ā€

Atha kho bhagavā mānatthaddhassa brāhmaį¹‡assa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaƱƱāya mānatthaddhaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then the Buddha, knowing Stuck-Upā€™s train of thought, addressed him in verse: having known with his own mind the reflection in the brahminā€™s mind, addressed the brahmin Mānatthaddha in verse:

ā€œNa mānaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡a sādhu, ā€œItā€™s not good to foster conceit ā€œThe fostering of conceit is never good

atthikassÄ«dha brāhmaį¹‡a; if you want whatā€™s good for you, brahmin. For one keen on his welfare, brahmin.

Yena atthena āgacchi, You should foster the goal You should instead foster that purpose

tamevamanubrÅ«hayeā€ti. which brought you here.ā€ Because of which youā€™ve come here.ā€

Atha kho mānatthaddho brāhmaį¹‡o: Then Stuck-Up thought, Then the brahmin Mānatthaddha, thinking,

ā€œcittaį¹ me samaį¹‡o gotamo jānātÄ«ā€ti tattheva bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā bhagavato pādāni mukhena ca paricumbati pāį¹‡Ä«hi ca parisambāhati, nāmaƱca sāveti: ā€œThe ascetic Gotama knows my mind!ā€ He bowed with his head at the Buddhaā€™s feet, caressing them and covering them with kisses, and pronounced his name: ā€œThe ascetic Gotama knows my mind,ā€

ā€œmānatthaddhāhaį¹, bho gotama, mānatthaddhāhaį¹, bho gotamāā€ti. ā€œWorthy Gotama, I am Stuck-Up! I am Stuck-Up!ā€ prostrated himself right there with his head at the Blessed Oneā€™s feet.

Atha kho sā parisā abbhutavittajātā ahosi: Then that assembly was stunned: Then that assembly was struck with amazement and the people said:

ā€œacchariyaį¹ vata bho, abbhutaį¹ vata bho. ā€œOh lord, how incredible, how amazing! ā€œIt is wonderful indeed,

AyaƱhi mānatthaddho brāhmaį¹‡o neva mātaraį¹ abhivādeti, na pitaraį¹ abhivādeti, na ācariyaį¹ abhivādeti, na jeį¹­į¹­habhātaraį¹ abhivādeti; This brahmin Stuck-Up doesnā€™t bow to his mother or father, his tutor, or his oldest brother. This brahmin Mānatthaddha does not pay homage to his mother and father,

atha ca pana samaį¹‡e gotame evarÅ«paį¹ paramanipaccakāraį¹ karotÄ«ā€ti. Yet he shows such utmost devotion to the ascetic Gotama!ā€ yet he shows such supreme honour towards the ascetic Gotama.ā€

Atha kho bhagavā mānatthaddhaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: Then the Buddha said to the brahmin Stuck-Up, Then the Blessed One said to the brahmin Mānatthaddha:

ā€œalaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, uį¹­į¹­hehi, sake āsane nisÄ«da. ā€œEnough, brahmin. Get up, and take your own seat. ā€œEnough, brahmin! Get up and sit in your own seat,

Yato te mayi cittaį¹ pasannanā€ti. For your mind has confidence in me.ā€ as your mind has confidence in me.ā€

Atha kho mānatthaddho brāhmaį¹‡o sake āsane nisÄ«ditvā bhagavantaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Stuck-Up took his seat and said to the Buddha: Then the brahmin Mānatthaddha sat down in his own seat and addressed the Blessed One in verse:

ā€œKesu na mānaį¹ kayirātha, ā€œRegarding whom should you not be conceited? ā€œTowards whom should one avoid conceit?

kesu cassa sagāravo; Who should you respect? Towards whom should one show reverence?

Kyassa apacitā assu, Who should you esteem? To whom should one be ever respectful?

kyassu sādhu supÅ«jitāā€ti. Who is it good to venerate properly?ā€ Whom is it proper to venerate deeply?ā€

ā€œMātari pitari cāpi, ā€œYour mother and father, ā€œFirst oneā€™s own mother and father,

atho jeį¹­į¹­hamhi bhātari; and also your oldest brother, Then oneā€™s eldest family brother,

Ācariye catutthamhi, with tutor as fourth. Then oneā€™s teacher as the fourth:

tesu na mānaį¹ kayirātha; Regarding these you should not be conceited. Towards these one should avoid conceit;

Tesu assa sagāravo, They are who you should respect. Towards these one should be reverential;

tyassa apacitā assu; They are who you should esteem. These should be well respected;

Tyassu sādhu supÅ«jitā. And theyā€™re who itā€™s good to venerate properly. These it is good to venerate deeply.

Arahante sÄ«tÄ«bhÅ«te, And when youā€™ve humbled conceit, and arenā€™t stuck-up, ā€œHaving struck down conceit, humble,

katakicce anāsave; show supreme reverence for One should pay homage to the arahants,

Nihacca mānaį¹ athaddho, the perfected ones, cooled, Those cool of heart, their tasks done,

te namasse anuttareā€ti. their task complete, free of defilements.ā€ The taintless ones, unsurpassed.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, mānatthaddho brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Stuck-Up said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Mānatthaddha said to the Blessed One:

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama ā€¦ ā€œMagnificent, Master Gotama!

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€ Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.ā€
