MÄnatthaddhasutta Stuck-Up
SÄvatthinidÄnaį¹. At SÄvatthÄ«. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Tena kho pana samayena mÄnatthaddho nÄma brÄhmaį¹o sÄvatthiyaį¹ paį¹ivasati. Now at that time a brahmin named Stuck-Up was residing in SÄvatthÄ«. Now on that occasion a brahmin named MÄnatthaddha, Stiff with Conceit, was residing at SÄvatthÄ«.
So neva mÄtaraį¹ abhivÄdeti, na pitaraį¹ abhivÄdeti, na Äcariyaį¹ abhivÄdeti, na jeį¹į¹habhÄtaraį¹ abhivÄdeti. He didnāt bow to his mother or father, his tutor, or his oldest brother. He did not pay homage to his mother or father, nor to his teacher or eldest brother.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ mahatiyÄ parisÄya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. Now, at that time the Buddha was teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly.
Atha kho mÄnatthaddhassa brÄhmaį¹assa etadahosi: Then Stuck-Up thought, Then it occurred to the brahmin MÄnatthaddha:
āayaį¹ kho samaį¹o gotamo mahatiyÄ parisÄya parivuto dhammaį¹ deseti. āThe ascetic Gotama is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly. āThis ascetic Gotama is teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly.
YannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena samaį¹o gotamo tenupasaį¹
kameyyaį¹. Why donāt I approach him? Let me approach him.
Sace maį¹ samaį¹o gotamo Älapissati, ahampi taį¹ ÄlapissÄmi. If he speaks to me, Iāll speak to him. If the ascetic Gotama addresses me, then I will address him in turn.
No ce maį¹ samaį¹o gotamo Älapissati, ahampi nÄlapissÄmÄ«āti. But if he doesnāt speak, neither will I.ā But if he does not address me, neither will I address him.ā
Atha kho mÄnatthaddho brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÅ«to ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Then the brahmin Stuck-Up went up to the Buddha, and stood silently to one side. Then the brahmin MÄnatthaddha approached the Blessed One and stood silently to one side,
Atha kho bhagavÄ taį¹ nÄlapi. But the Buddha didnāt speak to him. but the Blessed One did not address him.
Atha kho mÄnatthaddho brÄhmaį¹o: Then Stuck-Up thought, Then the brahmin MÄnatthaddha, thinking,
ānÄyaį¹ samaį¹o gotamo kiƱci jÄnÄtÄ«āti tatova puna nivattitukÄmo ahosi. āThis ascetic Gotama knows nothing!ā And he wanted to go back from there right away. āThis ascetic Gotama doesnāt know anything,ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ mÄnatthaddhassa brÄhmaį¹assa cetasÄ cetoparivitakkamaƱƱÄya mÄnatthaddhaį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then the Buddha, knowing Stuck-Upās train of thought, addressed him in verse: having known with his own mind the reflection in the brahminās mind, addressed the brahmin MÄnatthaddha in verse:
āNa mÄnaį¹ brÄhmaį¹a sÄdhu, āItās not good to foster conceit āThe fostering of conceit is never good
atthikassÄ«dha brÄhmaį¹a; if you want whatās good for you, brahmin. For one keen on his welfare, brahmin.
Yena atthena Ägacchi, You should foster the goal You should instead foster that purpose
tamevamanubrÅ«hayeāti. which brought you here.ā Because of which youāve come here.ā
Atha kho mÄnatthaddho brÄhmaį¹o: Then Stuck-Up thought, Then the brahmin MÄnatthaddha, thinking,
ācittaį¹ me samaį¹o gotamo jÄnÄtÄ«āti tattheva bhagavato pÄdesu sirasÄ nipatitvÄ bhagavato pÄdÄni mukhena ca paricumbati pÄį¹Ä«hi ca parisambÄhati, nÄmaƱca sÄveti: āThe ascetic Gotama knows my mind!ā He bowed with his head at the Buddhaās feet, caressing them and covering them with kisses, and pronounced his name: āThe ascetic Gotama knows my mind,ā
āmÄnatthaddhÄhaį¹, bho gotama, mÄnatthaddhÄhaį¹, bho gotamÄāti. āWorthy Gotama, I am Stuck-Up! I am Stuck-Up!ā prostrated himself right there with his head at the Blessed Oneās feet.
Atha kho sÄ parisÄ abbhutavittajÄtÄ ahosi: Then that assembly was stunned: Then that assembly was struck with amazement and the people said:
āacchariyaį¹ vata bho, abbhutaį¹ vata bho. āOh lord, how incredible, how amazing! āIt is wonderful indeed,
AyaƱhi mÄnatthaddho brÄhmaį¹o neva mÄtaraį¹ abhivÄdeti, na pitaraį¹ abhivÄdeti, na Äcariyaį¹ abhivÄdeti, na jeį¹į¹habhÄtaraį¹ abhivÄdeti; This brahmin Stuck-Up doesnāt bow to his mother or father, his tutor, or his oldest brother. This brahmin MÄnatthaddha does not pay homage to his mother and father,
atha ca pana samaį¹e gotame evarÅ«paį¹ paramanipaccakÄraį¹ karotÄ«āti. Yet he shows such utmost devotion to the ascetic Gotama!ā yet he shows such supreme honour towards the ascetic Gotama.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ mÄnatthaddhaį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ etadavoca: Then the Buddha said to the brahmin Stuck-Up, Then the Blessed One said to the brahmin MÄnatthaddha:
āalaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, uį¹į¹hehi, sake Äsane nisÄ«da. āEnough, brahmin. Get up, and take your own seat. āEnough, brahmin! Get up and sit in your own seat,
Yato te mayi cittaį¹ pasannanāti. For your mind has confidence in me.ā as your mind has confidence in me.ā
Atha kho mÄnatthaddho brÄhmaį¹o sake Äsane nisÄ«ditvÄ bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then Stuck-Up took his seat and said to the Buddha: Then the brahmin MÄnatthaddha sat down in his own seat and addressed the Blessed One in verse:
āKesu na mÄnaį¹ kayirÄtha, āRegarding whom should you not be conceited? āTowards whom should one avoid conceit?
kesu cassa sagÄravo; Who should you respect? Towards whom should one show reverence?
Kyassa apacitÄ assu, Who should you esteem? To whom should one be ever respectful?
kyassu sÄdhu supÅ«jitÄāti. Who is it good to venerate properly?ā Whom is it proper to venerate deeply?ā
āMÄtari pitari cÄpi, āYour mother and father, āFirst oneās own mother and father,
atho jeį¹į¹hamhi bhÄtari; and also your oldest brother, Then oneās eldest family brother,
Äcariye catutthamhi, with tutor as fourth. Then oneās teacher as the fourth:
tesu na mÄnaį¹ kayirÄtha; Regarding these you should not be conceited. Towards these one should avoid conceit;
Tesu assa sagÄravo, They are who you should respect. Towards these one should be reverential;
tyassa apacitÄ assu; They are who you should esteem. These should be well respected;
Tyassu sÄdhu supÅ«jitÄ. And theyāre who itās good to venerate properly. These it is good to venerate deeply.
Arahante sÄ«tÄ«bhÅ«te, And when youāve humbled conceit, and arenāt stuck-up, āHaving struck down conceit, humble,
katakicce anÄsave; show supreme reverence for One should pay homage to the arahants,
Nihacca mÄnaį¹ athaddho, the perfected ones, cooled, Those cool of heart, their tasks done,
te namasse anuttareāti. their task complete, free of defilements.ā The taintless ones, unsurpassed.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, mÄnatthaddho brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Stuck-Up said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin MÄnatthaddha said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama!
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.ā
