Paccanīkasutta The Contraphile

Tena kho pana samayena paccanÄ«kasÄto nÄma brÄhmaį¹o sÄvatthiyaį¹ paį¹ivasati. Now at that time a brahmin named Contraphile, who loved contradiction, was residing in SÄvatthÄ«. Now on that occasion a brahmin named PaccanÄ«kasÄta, Relisher of Contradiction, was residing at SÄvatthÄ«.
Atha kho paccanÄ«kasÄtassa brÄhmaį¹assa etadahosi: Then Contraphile thought, Then it occurred to the brahmin PaccanÄ«kasÄta:
āyannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena samaį¹o gotamo tenupasaį¹
kameyyaį¹. āWhy donāt I go to the ascetic Gotama and āLet me approach the ascetic Gotama
Yaį¹ yadeva samaį¹o gotamo bhÄsissati taį¹ tadevassÄhaį¹ paccanÄ«kÄssanāti. contradict everything he says?ā and contradict whatever he says.ā
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ abbhokÄse caį¹
kamati. At that time the Buddha was walking mindfully in the open air. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was walking back and forth in the open.
Atha kho paccanÄ«kasÄto brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ caį¹
kamantaį¹ etadavoca: Then the brahmin Contraphile went up to the Buddha, and said to him as he was walking, Then the brahmin PaccanÄ«kasÄta approached the Blessed One and said to him while he was walking back and forth:
ābhaį¹a samaį¹adhammanāti. āAscetic, preach the Dhamma.ā āSpeak Dhamma, ascetic!ā
āNa paccanÄ«kasÄtena, āFine words arenāt easy to understand āWell-spoken counsel is hard to understand
suvijÄnaį¹ subhÄsitaį¹; by a lover of contradiction, By one who relishes contradiction,
Upakkiliį¹į¹hacittena, whose mind is tainted By one with a corrupt mind
sÄrambhabahulena ca. and full of aggression. Who is engrossed in aggression.
Yo ca vineyya sÄrambhaį¹, But when youāve dispelled aggression, āBut if one has removed aggression
appasÄdaƱca cetaso; and your suspicious mind, And the distrust of oneās heart,
ÄghÄtaį¹ paį¹inissajja, and youāve got rid of resentment, If one has cast away aversion,
sa ve jaĆ±Ć±Ä subhÄsitanāti. then youāll understand fine words.ā One can understand well-spoken counsel.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, paccanÄ«kasÄto brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Contraphile said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin PaccanÄ«kasÄta said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
