Atha kho mÄtuposako brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a brahmin who provided for his mother went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then a brahmin who supported his mother approached the Blessed One
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mÄtuposako brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha, ā¦ and said to him:
āahaƱhi, bho gotama, dhammena bhikkhaį¹ pariyesÄmi, dhammena bhikkhaį¹ pariyesitvÄ mÄtÄpitaro posemi. āWorthy Gotama, I seek alms by legitimate means, which I use to provide for my mother and father. Master Gotama, I seek almsfood righteously and thereby support my mother and father.
KaccÄhaį¹, bho gotama, evaį¹
kÄrÄ« kiccakÄrÄ« homÄ«āti? In doing so, am I doing my duty?ā In doing so, am I doing my duty?
āTaggha tvaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, evaį¹
kÄrÄ« kiccakÄrÄ« hosi. āIndeed, brahmin, in so doing you are doing your duty. For sure, brahmin, in doing so you are doing your duty.
Yo kho, brÄhmaį¹a, dhammena bhikkhaį¹ pariyesati, dhammena bhikkhaį¹ pariyesitvÄ mÄtÄpitaro poseti, bahuį¹ so puƱƱaį¹ pasavatÄ«ti. Whoever seeks alms by legitimate means, and uses them to provide for their mother and father creates much merit. One who seeks almsfood righteously and thereby supports his mother and father generates much merit.
Yo mÄtaraį¹ pitaraį¹ vÄ, A mortal provides for their mother āAnd His parents,
macco dhammena posati; and father by legitimate means; When a mortal righteously supports,
TÄya naį¹ pÄricariyÄya, because they look after Because of this service to
mÄtÄpitÅ«su paį¹įøitÄ; their parents like this, his parents, The wise
Idheva naį¹ pasaį¹santi, theyāre praised in this life by the astute, praise him here in this world,
pecca sagge pamodatÄ«āti. and they depart to rejoice in heaven.ā And after death he rejoices in heaven.
Evaį¹ vutte, mÄtuposako brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin who provided for his mother said to the Buddha, When this was said,the brahmin who supported his mother said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā¦ Magnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
