Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ magadhesu viharati maį¹imÄlike cetiye maį¹ibhaddassa yakkhassa bhavane. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Magadhans at the Maį¹imÄlika Tree-shrine, the haunt of the native spirit Maį¹ibhadda. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Magadhans at the Maį¹imÄlaka Shrine
Atha kho maį¹ibhaddo yakkho yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: Then the native spirit Maį¹ibhadda went up to the Buddha, and recited this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Then the yakkha Maį¹ibhadda approached the Blessed One and in the Blessed Oneās presence recited this verse:
āSatÄ«mato sadÄ bhaddaį¹, āItās always auspicious for the mindful; āIt is always good for the mindful one
satimÄ sukhamedhati; the mindful prosper in happiness. The mindful one thrives in happiness.
Satīmato suve seyyo, Each new day is better for the mindful, It is better each day for the mindful one
verÄ ca parimuccatÄ«āti. and theyāre freed from enmity.ā And he is freed from enmity.ā
