Nadubbhiyasutta Not Betray One Should Not Transgress

Sāvatthiyaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«. At Savatthi.

ā€œBhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, sakkassa devānamindassa rahogatassa paį¹­isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ā€œOnce upon a time, mendicants, as Sakka, lord of gods, was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, ā€œBhikkhus, once in the past, when Sakka, lord of the devas, was alone in seclusion, the following reflection arose in his mind:

ā€˜yopi me assa supaccatthiko tassapāhaį¹ na dubbheyyanā€™ti. ā€˜I should never betray even a sworn enemy.ā€™ ā€˜Though someone may be my sworn enemy, | should not transgress even against him.ā€™

Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkassa devānamindassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaƱƱāya yena sakko devānamindo tenupasaį¹…kami. And then Vepacitti, lord of titans, knowing Sakkaā€™s train of thought, approached him. Then, bhikkhus, Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, having known with his own mind the reflection in Sakka's mind, approached Sakka, lord of the devas.

Addasā kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiį¹ asurindaį¹ dÅ«ratova āgacchantaį¹. Sakka saw Vepacitti coming off in the distance, Sakka saw Vepacitti coming in the distance

Disvāna vepacittiį¹ asurindaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him, and said to him:

ā€˜tiį¹­į¹­ha, vepacitti, gahitosÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Stop, Vepacitti, youā€™re caught!ā€™ ā€˜Stop, Vepacitti, you're caught!ā€™

ā€˜Yadeva te, mārisa, pubbe cittaį¹, tadeva tvaį¹ mā pajahāsÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Dear sir, donā€™t give up the idea you just had!ā€™ ā€˜Dear sir, do not abandon the idea that just occurred to you.ā€™

ā€˜Sapassu ca me, vepacitti, adubbhāyāā€™ti. ā€˜Swear, Vepacitti, that you wonā€™t betray me.ā€™ ā€˜Swear, Vepacitti, that you won't transgress against me.ā€™

ā€˜Yaį¹ musā bhaį¹‡ato pāpaį¹, ā€˜Whatever bad things happen to a liar, ā€˜Whatever evil comes to a liar,

Yaį¹ pāpaį¹ ariyÅ«pavādino; or to someone who slanders the noble ones, Whatever evil to a reviler of noble ones,

Mittadduno ca yaį¹ pāpaį¹, or to someone who betrays a friend, Whatever evil to a betrayer of friends,

Yaį¹ pāpaį¹ akataƱƱuno; or to someone whoā€™s ungrateful, Whatever evil to one without gratitude:

Tameva pāpaį¹ phusatu, the same bad things impact That same evil touches the one

Yo te dubbhe sujampatÄ«ā€™ā€ti. anyone who betrays you, Sujāā€™s husband.ā€™ā€ Who transgresses against you, Suja's husband.ā€™ā€
