Samuddakasutta Seers by the Ocean Seers by the Ocean

āBhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, sambahulÄ isayo sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄ samuddatÄ«re paį¹į¹akuį¹Ä«su sammanti. āOnce upon a time, mendicants, several seers who were ethical, of good character, settled in leaf huts on the ocean shore. āBhikkhus, once in the past a number of seers who were virtuous and of good character had settled down in leaf huts along the shore of the ocean.
Tena kho pana samayena devÄsurasaį¹
gÄmo samupabyÅ«įø·ho ahosi. Now at that time a battle was fought between the gods and the titans. Now on that occasion the devas and the asuras were arrayed for a battle.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ isÄ«naį¹ sÄ«lavantÄnaį¹ kalyÄį¹adhammÄnaį¹ etadahosi: Then the seers thought, Then it occurred to those seers who were virtuous and of good character:
ādhammikÄ kho devÄ, adhammikÄ asurÄ. āThe gods are principled, the titans are unprincipled. āThe devas are righteous, the asuras unrighteous.
SiyÄpi no asurato bhayaį¹. We may be at risk from the titans. There may be danger to us from the asuras.
YannÅ«na mayaį¹ sambaraį¹ asurindaį¹ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ abhayadakkhiį¹aį¹ yÄceyyÄmÄāti. Why donāt we approach Sambara, lord of titans, and beg him for a pledge of safety.ā Let us approach Sambara, lord of the asuras, and ask him for a guarantee of safety.ā
Atha kho, bhikkhave, te isayo sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaāsamuddatÄ«re paį¹į¹akuį¹Ä«su antarahitÄ sambarassa asurindassa sammukhe pÄturahesuį¹. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, those seers vanished from those leaf huts on the ocean shore and reappeared in Sambaraās presence. Then, bhikkhus, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, those seers who were virtuous and of good character disappeared from their leaf huts along the shore of the ocean and reappeared in the presence of Sambara, lord of the asuras.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, te isayo sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄ sambaraį¹ asurindaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsiį¹su: Then those seers addressed Sambara in verse: Then those seers addressed Sambara in verse:
āIsayo sambaraį¹ pattÄ, āThe seers have come to Sambara āThe seers who have come to Sambara
yÄcanti abhayadakkhiį¹aį¹; to beg for a pledge of safety. Ask him for a guarantee of safety.
KÄmaį¹
karo hi te dÄtuį¹, For you can give them what you wish, For you can give them what you wish,
bhayassa abhayassa vÄāti. whether danger or safety.ā Whether it be danger or safety.ā
āIsÄ«naį¹ abhayaį¹ natthi, āThere is no safety for seers, āI'll grant no safety to the seers,
duį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ sakkasevinaį¹; the hated associates of Sakka! For they are hated devotees of Sakka;
Abhayaį¹ yÄcamÄnÄnaį¹, Though you beg me for your safety, Though you appeal to me for safety,
bhayameva dadÄmi voāti. Iāll only give you fear!ā I'll give you only danger.ā
āAbhayaį¹ yÄcamÄnÄnaį¹, āThough we beg you for our safety, āThough we have asked for safety,
bhayameva dadÄsi no; you give us only fear. You give us only danger.
Paį¹iggaį¹hÄma te etaį¹, This is what we get from you: We receive this at your hands:
akkhayaį¹ hotu te bhayaį¹. may endless peril come to you! May ceaseless danger come to you!
YÄdisaį¹ vapate bÄ«jaį¹, Whatever kind of seed you sow, Whatever sort of seed is sown,
tÄdisaį¹ harate phalaį¹; that is the fruit you reap. That is the sort of fruit one reaps:
KalyÄį¹akÄrÄ« kalyÄį¹aį¹, A doer of good gets good, The doer of good reaps good;
pÄpakÄrÄ« ca pÄpakaį¹; a doer of bad gets bad. The doer of evil reaps evil.
Pavuttaį¹ tÄta te bÄ«jaį¹, You have sown your own seed, friend, By you, dear, has the seed been sown;
phalaį¹ paccanubhossasÄ«āti. now youāll experience the fruit.ā Thus you will experience the fruit.ā
Atha kho, bhikkhave, te isayo sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄ sambaraį¹ asurindaį¹ abhisapitvÄāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaāsambarassa asurindassa sammukhe antarahitÄ samuddatÄ«re paį¹į¹akuį¹Ä«su pÄturahesuį¹. Then those seers, having cursed Sambara, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from Sambaraās presence and reappeared in those leaf huts on the ocean shore. Then, bhikkhus, having put a curse on Sambara, lord of the asuras, just as quickly as a strong man might extend his drawn-in arm or draw in his extended arm, those seers who were virtuous and of good character disappeared from the presence of Sambara and reappeared in their leaf huts on the shore of the ocean.
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sambaro asurindo tehi isÄ«hi sÄ«lavantehi kalyÄį¹adhammehi abhisapito rattiyÄ sudaį¹ tikkhattuį¹ ubbijjÄ«āti. But after being cursed by the seers, Sambara woke in alarm three times that night.ā But after being cursed by those seers who were virtuous and of good character, Sambara, lord of the asuras, was gripped by alarm three times in the course of the night.ā
