Yajamānasutta Sponsoring Sacrifice Bestowing Alms

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha on Mount Vulture Peak.

Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then Sakka, lord of the devas, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side. Standing to one side,

Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaį¹ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: and addressed him in verse: he addressed the Blessed One in verse:

ā€œYajamānānaį¹ manussānaį¹, ā€œFor humans, those merit-seeking creatures, ā€œFor those people who bestow alms,

puƱƱapekkhāna pāį¹‡inaį¹; who sponsor sacrifices, For living beings in quest of merit,

Karotaį¹ opadhikaį¹ puƱƱaį¹, making worldly merit, Performing merit of the mundane type,

kattha dinnaį¹ mahapphalanā€ti. where is a gift very fruitful?ā€ Where does a gift bear great fruit?ā€

ā€œCattāro ca paį¹­ipannā, ā€œFour practicing the path, ā€œThe four practising the way

cattāro ca phale į¹­hitā; and four established in the fruit. And the four established in the fruit:

Esa saį¹…gho ujubhÅ«to, This is the sincere Saį¹…gha, This is the Saį¹…gha of upright conduct

paƱƱāsīlasamāhito. with wisdom, ethics, and immersion. Endowed with wisdom and virtue.

Yajamānānaį¹ manussānaį¹, For humans, those merit-seeking creatures, For those people who bestow alms,

PuƱƱapekkhāna pāį¹‡inaį¹; who sponsor sacrifices, For living beings in quest of merit,

Karotaį¹ opadhikaį¹ puƱƱaį¹, making worldly merit, Performing merit of the mundane type,

Saį¹…ghe dinnaį¹ mahapphalanā€ti. what is given to the Saį¹…gha is very fruitful.ā€ A gift to the Saį¹…gha bears great fruit.ā€
