Buddhavandanāsutta Homage to the Buddha Veneration of the Buddha

Sāvatthiyaį¹ jetavane. Near SāvatthÄ« in Jetaā€™s Grove. At SāvatthÄ« in Jeta's Grove.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā divāvihāragato hoti paį¹­isallÄ«no. Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the dayā€™s meditation. Now on that occasion the Blessed One had gone for his day's abiding and was in seclusion.

Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo brahmā ca sahampati yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā paccekaį¹ dvārabāhaį¹ nissāya aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and the divinity Sahampati approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. Then Sakka, lord of the devas, and Brahmā Sahampati approached the Blessed One and stood one at each doorpost.

Atha kho sakko devānamindo bhagavato santike imaį¹ gāthaį¹ abhāsi: Then Sakka recited this verse in the Buddhaā€™s presence: Then Sakka, lord of the devas, recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œUį¹­į¹­hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹…gāma, ā€œRise, hero! Victor in battle, with burden put down, ā€œRise up, O hero, victor in battle! Your burden lowered debt-free one,

Pannabhāra anaį¹‡a vicara loke; wander the world free of debt. wander in the world.

CittaƱca te suvimuttaį¹, Your mind is fully liberated, Your mind is fully liberated,

Cando yathā pannarasāya rattinā€ti. like the moon on the fifteenth night.ā€ Like the moon on the fifteenth night.ā€

ā€œNa kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā evaį¹ vanditabbā. ā€œLord of gods, thatā€™s not how to pay homage to the Realized Ones. ā€œIt is not in such a way that the Tathagatas are to be venerated, lord of the devas.

EvaƱca kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā vanditabbā: This is how it should be done: The Tathāgatas are to be venerated thus:

ā€˜Uį¹­į¹­hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹…gāma, ā€˜Rise, hero! Victor in battle, leader of the caravan, Rise up, O hero, victor in battle! O caravan leader,

Satthavāha anaį¹‡a vicara loke; wander the world free of debt. debt-free one, wander in the world.

Desassu bhagavā dhammaį¹, Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma! Teach the Dhamma, Blessed One:

AƱƱātāro bhavissantÄ«ā€™ā€ti. There will be those who understand!ā€™ā€ There will be those who will understand.ā€
