Paį¹­ipadāsutta Practice The Two Ways

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati ā€¦peā€¦ At SāvatthÄ«. At SaĢ„vatthıĢ„.

ā€œmicchāpaį¹­ipadaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi sammāpaį¹­ipadaƱca. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the wrong practice and the right practice. ā€œBhikkhus, I will teach you the wrong way and the right way.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€ Listen to that and attend closely, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œYes, venerable sir,ā€ those bhikkhus replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:

ā€œKatamā ca, bhikkhave, micchāpaį¹­ipadā? ā€œAnd whatā€™s the wrong practice? ā€œAnd what, bhikkhus, is the wrong way?

Avijjāpaccayā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; Ignorance is a condition for choices. With ignorance as condition, volitional formations [come to be];

saį¹…khārapaccayā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Choices are a condition for consciousness. ā€¦ with volitional formations as condition, consciousnessā€¦.

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, micchāpaį¹­ipadā. This is called the wrong practice. This, bhikkhus, is called the wrong way.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, sammāpaį¹­ipadā? And whatā€™s the right practice? And what, bhikkhus, is the right way?

Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saį¹…khāranirodho; When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease. With the remainderless fading away and cessation of ignorance comes cessation of volitional formations;

saį¹…khāranirodhā viƱƱāį¹‡anirodho ā€¦peā€¦ When choices cease, consciousness ceases. ā€¦ with the cessation of volitional formations, cessation of consciousness. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sammāpaį¹­ipadāā€ti. This is called the right practice.ā€ This, bhikkhus, is called the right way.ā€
