Dukkhasutta Suffering
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
āDukkhassa, bhikkhave, samudayaƱca atthaį¹
gamaƱca desessÄmi. āMendicants, I will teach you the origin and ending of suffering.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āKatamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo? āAnd what, mendicants, is the origin of suffering?
CakkhuƱca paį¹icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱÄį¹aį¹. Tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹
gati phasso. Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.
PhassapaccayÄ vedanÄ; Contact is a condition for feeling.
vedanÄpaccayÄ taį¹hÄ. Feeling is a condition for craving.
Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo. This is the origin of suffering.
SotaƱca paį¹icca sadde ca uppajjati sotaviƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦peā¦ Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. ā¦
ghÄnaƱca paį¹icca gandhe ca ā¦peā¦ Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. ā¦
jivhaƱca paį¹icca rase ca ā¦peā¦ Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. ā¦
kÄyaƱca paį¹icca phoį¹į¹habbe ca ā¦peā¦ Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. ā¦
manaƱca paį¹icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviƱƱÄį¹aį¹. Tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹
gati phasso. Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact.

vedanÄpaccayÄ taį¹hÄ. Feeling is a condition for craving.
TassÄyeva taį¹hÄya asesavirÄganirodhÄ upÄdÄnanirodho; When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases.
upÄdÄnanirodhÄ bhavanirodho; When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.
bhavanirodhÄ jÄtinirodho; When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.
jÄtinirodhÄ jarÄmaraį¹aį¹ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsÄ nirujjhanti. When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.
Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.
Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaį¹
gamo. This is the ending of suffering.
